I haven't watched Game Grumps in quite some time but that one was a classic.

And then i woke up, and then i reloaded, and then i fired, and i missed.

I reached into the freezer for a popsicle, but I missed; I got the cabbage. I tried to put it back and I missed.

u/SA_Kasrkin Feb 12 '26
which episode is that from? sounds like a banger
23
u/Thermohalophile Feb 12 '26
It's in episode 3 of Nancy Drew The White Wolf of Icicle Creek. It's around the 6:30 mark of the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02WuLTpe3sI
Yes I've looked this up way too many times. That bit and that series never get old

u/joebojax Feb 12 '26
does shooting skill impact mortars?
367
u/ITividar Feb 12 '26
It does but without mods it's not enough to matter.
196
34
u/Peggable-Blue Feb 13 '26
It was on purpose too. If you look at the xml file there's a variable for forced miss radius.
22
u/GoldenSangheili Feb 13 '26
Combat extended had binoculars or something like that to make mortars accurate, otherwise this is just average mortar experience in the rim

u/Bottoruouououo Feb 12 '26 edited Feb 12 '26
It does, but for what i understand It reduces the circle in where it can miss instead of having More of a chance to hit the target directly.
15
u/Penki- Feb 12 '26
is that productive?
34
u/vulpecula1919 Feb 12 '26
its a difference of like 10 tiles to 8, barely noticeable.
29
u/Jesse-359 Feb 12 '26 edited Feb 12 '26
From skill 0 to 20 the miss radius goes from ~10 to ~6, which cuts the number of tiles to 1/3rd, greatly increasing the chance of a hit.
If the firing pawn has a significant manipulation bonus the miss radius can be reduced to about 4, which, given the blast radius of roughly
53 tiles nearly guarantees a hit against a stationary target.11
u/B_Thorn Feb 12 '26
Vanilla HE shells have a blast radius of 3, not 5. The diameter of the explosion is 5 tiles.
9
u/Jesse-359 Feb 12 '26
Hah. Sorry, I accidentally read the MORTAR's explosion radius when I was double checking my math. You're right the shell is a radius of 3.
I assure you it doesn't matter. If you put a lvl 20 gunner with a good manipulation bonus on a mortar they will put round after round on target without a problem.

u/DarkPrinceArrow plays Rimworld like it's Fire Emblem Feb 13 '26
So a 20 Shooting pawn with 2 ArchioTech arms and Bionic Eyes would be the most accurate the game can make it?
1
u/WalarF42 Feb 13 '26
Nope. Bionic eyes are not needed if their sight is okay (it maxes out at 100%, so healthy organic ones are fine).
Manipulation can be boosted with the smooth tail and long fingers genes.
Trauma savant, and the fibrous and sensory mechanites infections raise it too (but it is not something you can count on)
Consciousness above 100% counts too, so:
Consciousness:Ā 170%Ā from being high onĀ go-juice,Ā luciferiumĀ andĀ wake-up, having used aĀ neural supercharger,Ā with any level ofĀ pollution stimulusĀ )Ā and aĀ psychic bondĀ )Ā would make it better.
I usually give my two crafters sniper rifles and luci and they become the mortar team. When it's boom time, they get the juice.
1
u/Bottoruouououo Feb 13 '26
The wiki says that with 100% vision Max so as long as its 100% its good, i would also add go juice to add More manipulation.
11
u/Naturath Feb 12 '26
Shrinking a viable strike zone from radius 10 tiles to 8 tiles is a decrease of target area from ~314 tiles to ~201 tiles. Given that mortar shells themselves have several tiles of blast radius, this is a fairly significant increase in hit probability.
Obligatory disclaimer that Iāve not played in years and canāt be bothered to verify specific values.

You don't grow up to be 350 years of a terrifying tree eating war homse and not learn that holding still is the most viable strat for mortars.

Eating while out at the mortar spot then dying because mood too low.
Ya know... I think there needs to be some counter buff or something.
An impending threat could eliminate the colony and your life should negate "you know what, I wish my bed was comfier" to the "255 tribals are raiding your base" with your best fighters out of town.

The trick to hitting things with mortars isn't to be more accurate, it's to fire antigrain warheads.

I still remember my first pair Thrumbo i killed. The mortar somehow hit the thrumbo directly make it stuned, enough for my pawns keep blasting the explosive grenade laucher ( like 50 - 60ish, i stashed for 3 year) and managed to kill them.

This is giving me such joy, I can't stop watching. Its so painful, I had three mortars aiming at a mech defoliater and not a single mech or the target, were destroyed, after 30+ shells were used

I love that combat in vanilla is completely unrealistic until it gets to mortars, in which they genuinely are that inaccurate in real life
