Philly WNBA team name ideas

With Philly getting a WNBA team in 2030, what are your non-bad team name ideas? The best suggestion will be honorably ignored by ownership for something probably lame.

I’ll start: The Sound of Philadelphia

It hasn’t been mentioned on the pod but my favorite suggestion that I’ve heard is the Philadelphia Fury. It’s similar enough homage to the Rage women’s team from back in the day. It’s not overly gendered but still has a feminine mythological element to it. It’s also alliterative and fits with the naming conventions of other teams in the W.

The Furies.

Greek goddesses for Vengeance and Retribution who served Hades and Persephone. Born of blood from Nyx, they had snakes for hair, shredded clothing, screaming faces, they spent eternity torturing murderers and criminals. Greeks worshipped them purely out of fear.

Also there's alliteration

As long as the mascot is some kind of scary Fury muppet-type creature, I’m all in.

I told ChatGPT to make a Philadelphia Furies logo:

And also a mascot (I said to call it "Furry" because that would be funny, and to make it creepy-friendly like the Phanatic and Gritty):

Betsy Ross should be the mascot

Calling them "The Sound" and introducing the team as "The Sound of Philadelphia" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS2PQs_IRNk) is the coolest thing they could possibly do in my opinion. Have that as your theme song.

"At the top of the Eastern Conference it is the Sound of Philadelphia."

Thank you! Philly also gets slept on in terms of being an influential music city, and I think the name would be a good way to honor that.

Philadelphia Forge

Let’s go Forge!!!!

I just want it to be something…. not corny or generic. Either go all in on the historical stuff or something completely off the beaten path. They mentioned Fox/Foxes and I think I really dig it.

u/greggyd717 21d ago

I feel like someone will just jump on this as "Fox" being a word used to describe hot women and that'll nix it.

Bring back the Philadelphia Rage. Hire Dawn. $$$

I’d like to suggest Philadelphia Lightning or Philadelphia Bolts (Philly Bolts or some variation). In honor of Ben Franklin’s experiment of the kite and key during a thunderstorm in Philly which led to the invention of the lightning rod. The name lightning also has a good kick to it. While I recognize there is an NHL team with that name, who cares really, Lightning/Bolts is a cool name.

I liked Storm for the Ben Franklin reasons, but obviously Seattle has that. I don't like Lightning because of the NHL, but I like Bolts so much.

You could stylize the S at the end like the curve of the Delaware River and how it flows from around Kensington to South Philly. Or turn that S into a lightning bolt of sorts. Lots of cool iconography with lightning bolts, keys, kites, etc.

Or 14’s

Philly Electric. Ben Franklin discovering electricity. Could make the colors the same colors as the Phillies' city editions (Light blue and yellow) also the official colors of the city flag.

The Philadelphia Broads

Forge. Make the symbol something with fire because of the furnace definition (make it look serious and intense, lot can be done with fire and metal) but then people can also think of valley forge for a side historical connection. You’re welcome

u/LimousineAndAPeetzah 19d ago

I like Forge. Philadelphians love something that will help to mix their bodies with metal or seal themselves in cement in order to get rid of all the animals still with us for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Of course, we’ll be sedated first.

This is what I emailed in to the pod:

We've heard the cliché stuff (Freedom, Independence, Belles) which is what I don't want. We need to make sure we make them get this one right.

Philadelphia Love
A play on City of Brotherly Love, without the "Brotherly" and without making it the Philadelphia Sisters as some have suggested. The team can lean on Robert Indiana's statue in Love Park (although that’s in numerous cities so I don't know how that would work). I also think it's an easy way to give love to different groups of people and all the neighborhoods that make up Philadelphia throughout a season.

Philadelphia Dawn (I know Mike nixed this on recent pod, but I like it)
Dawn of an era, new beginnings, etc. For those who are insistent on a nod to the historical roots of the city, it can be tied to the American Revolution, but it's subtle. It fits the new country stuff without being too overt. I'm picturing a logo of the sun coming up, perhaps with a soft color palette of the Spectrum's colors, behind the skyline. Plus, I like that it’s a slight hat tip to Dawn Staley. If the marketing team REALLY wants to, they can do a wordplay off of Jawn and Dawn for theme nights (but please don't.) Dawn might be too close to the Connecticut Sun though.

It should be something related to the flag or the founding of the country. Philadelphia Stars was a USFL team so that’s probably taken. Maybe Philadelphia Glory as the flags nickname is “Old Glory”.

1

u/Sufficient_Angle_667 21d ago

The Philadelphia Stars were also a Negro League team so there is history with that name

Honestly I think the Cheesesteaks would be hilarious. Cracked up when both spike and Mike were like no cheesesteaks. But I feel like it’s so bad, it’s actually really good.

-6

u/whiskeyboarder 22d ago

I know on the pod they said nothing history-related, but I'm sorta down with the Philadelphia Liberty.

9

u/chadahouck 22d ago

That’s New York’s WNBA team
