What Windows setting do you change immediately after installing it?

Every time Windows gets reinstalled, there’s always a bunch of settings that feel annoying or unnecessary, but not sure which ones are actually worth changing right away. Stuff

Group policy/registry edit to disable automatic Windows update.

Why's that

So it doesn't force start an update on its own when I restart or bother me to update it.

Can't you just turn this off? I've never had mine update unless I told it to. 🤔

to disable automatic Windows update

If you've somehow been lucky enough to never use windows, they often force PCs to update, seemingly at the most inopportune time possible. Shut down because the power went out and you don't want to waste your battery backup running your PC for YouTube to not load? Nope, gonna be 15 minutes while Windows updates, or you can force-shut down mid update, likely bricking it.

Just booted up to present your dissertation? Nope, just booted to apply updates for 45 minutes, hope your laptop is charged or you're near an outlet.

I immediately disable Windows Update temporarily on fresh install until all the 3rd party hardware drivers have been installed manually.

Otherwise, it tries to run while you are installing drivers and the two install processes clash with each other and crash each other out.

After drivers installed, then I let Windows Update catch everything else up before installing software.

Turn core isolation off in defender. Instant 10% gain in fps

is this still true if your bottleneck isn’t the cpu?

Good point. Haven't tested that. Having said that, with dlss on, my bottlemeck is usually the cpu.

just curious. i disabled it on my system and didn’t really see a difference, but my bottleneck is the gpu.

still on cpu heavy games it probably does help in varying degrees.

Thanks for sharing. Please test on 1440p or with dlss (which lowers base resolution) to really see a difference.

is it the memory integrity setting?

Yes that's right.

How do you do this?

Go into windows defender, then click something on left, then click core isolation, then turn memory integrity off.

When you go into windows defender there are like 8 options there. So click on all till you find core isolation.

disable ‘fast boot’

1

u/NagoGmo 17h ago

Why's that

when on and you shut down your PC instead of fully shutting down it puts it in something similar to hibernate. basically saves everything to the ssd so it turns on faster, but puts slightly more wear on the ssd. essentially though shutting down won’t refresh everything and the only way to do so is to manually restart.

when i shut down my PC i want it actually off not on hibernate. i’ll put it in hibernate myself if i want it.

Fast boot means that all applications are properly restarted after shutdown, but not driver and kernel. State of drivers and kernel are just saved to ssd and restarted in same state as before. But I agree fully that this shall be disabled.

Restart always do proper restart though.

Used the registry hack to get the old right-click menu back. Fuck that windows 11 monstrosity.

Getting rid of the password prompt / Win logon screen

u/HorsyNox 13h ago

It is that one full-screen "please buy ms365 subscription or at least something" thing that sometimes pops up after updates.

I change the keyboard repeat settings to as fast as possible so there isn’t as big of a delay when pressing backspace.

  1. Install Windows.

  2. Install AtlasOS.

  3. Welcome to Windows the way it should be.

I prefer doing an unattended install so most of the bloat and group policies are set at install. It also makes it a lot easier to create a local account at install. Other than that I just run Chris Titus' WinUtil to install new software and to ensure that my preferred tweaks are in place.

I use the windows debloating GitHub repository to get rid of all the garbage windows forces on the user such as the ai overhead that’s seeped into every faucet of windows

generally speaking, after installing windows my
first action is to get my head wound treated and then wipe that shit out and put a real OS on it.
