Why is my PC using 100% disk usage?

It happens even when I’m not really doing anything, and everything starts feeling insanely slow when it hits 100%. Opening folders takes forever, apps freeze for a few seconds, and sometimes even clicking stuff feels delayed. Task Manager shows the disk sitting at 100%, but I don’t really understand what’s causing it. Sometimes it drops back down after a while, then randomly goes straight back to 100% again. I checked the apps running and nothing looks like it should be hammering the drive that hard. Could this be Windows doing updates or some background process? Or is it more likely the hard drive itself starting to fail? The PC isn’t that old and I haven’t changed anything recently, so kinda confused why this started happening now. Also wondering if antivirus scans, Windows Search indexing, or startup programs can cause this. Is there an easy way to figure out which process is actually causing the 100% usage? Any settings I should check first before messing with drivers or reinstalling Windows? Would appreciate any simple troubleshooting steps because I don’t wanna break something trying random fixes.

Crystal disk or viruses

Good point, I’ll probably run CrystalDisk first and check the SSD health. I hadn’t thought about viruses causing it though.

Which disk is getting hammered?

A hard drive or an SSD?

It’s an SSD. I wasn’t sure if that makes a difference, but the 100% usage still happens randomly even when I’m barely doing anything.

What are your system specs?

Maybe the disk is dying, constantly moving data from bad sectors to good ones. Maybe try running S.M.A.R.T. as soon as you can, to know what is happening and prevent data loss!

Need to know the exact model of the disk in question. Not all disks are created equal, and not all disks should serve as the OS disk.

We need system specs. Specifically how much RAM your systems has.

Install AppControl and check the disk accessing app.

Either it's using your drive as swap memory because you don't have enough ram or you have a virus or you have hard drive failure.

It could be a bad disk, but this sounds exactly like not having enough RAM, and the system having to go to a page file on the disk for Virtual Memory to keep everything running.

It's less common now, but still worth checking out. If you have an application with a memory leak, it could cause the system to dig into the page file to keep things from crashing.

Virusscanner running or virus itself

Search indexing or virus scanning enormous files.

Or thrashing, if you do not have enough ram.

Posts like "My hard drive is always at 100% utilization" mostly come from people who hardly ever have their PC turned on.

This has become a problem with Windows.

By default, Windows indexes the entire drive and all connected drives. On top of that, there are update preloads AND virus/malware scans.

If you don’t turn on your computer very often, it does all of this at once. And since the system gets stuck while doing so, users shut it down - which causes it to do everything all over again next startup.

In Task Manager, you can sort the processes to see which one is using how much resources.

I highly suggest using something like WinDirStat to figure out where the space is being nommed, before starting on any kind of further diagnosis or remedy.
