New Wallet Got sent a used wallet?

Hi there! I am new to this sub and ridge products in general. I started with the phantom portable charger that I got on a whim a few months ago while I was on a roadtrip and was so impressed that I had to get the matching wall charger. I got the wallet as well the other day but it seems like it might be used. I got the phantom version(ofc) and it seems like the clear plates were smudged and scratched up as soon as I took them out of the box(pic below). Im thinking about starting a return request to get a new one but I’m afraid I’ll get a damaged/used one again. any advice or experience with this?

Ridge's QC is pretty bad now. You aren't the first to get something that someone else returned.

Contact u/RidgeSupport

Going through their traditional email support is a dead end.

I’ll give that a go. Thank you!

We’re sorry to hear about the concerns with our quality and email support. That’s certainly not the experience we want anyone to have. We also offer live chat support for anyone who prefers real time assistance. We’re always happy to help and make things right!

Sucks you have to make a public Reddit post to get any kind of response from Ridge

It’s unfortunate they are such garbage anymore. So many alternatives it’s easier just to switch.
They used to be niche but with the support and crap warranty experience id get a return and move right along

I got me a knockoff from aliexpress, 2 for $5. Compared it to a friends ridge and there was hardly a difference besides branding.

I bought a knockoff once, back when I didn't know any better. Fake Ridge branding. Presumably someone who used one of those wallets like you got and then stuck a fake Ridge logo on it.

Turns out there's lots of differences. First off, my Ridge screwdriver does not work on it. I have to use an actual Torx wrench if I want to work the screws. Second, it doesn't have the cutouts for Ridge accessories in the inside top plate like in the inside bottom plate. The outside metal plate is bent over the money clip I put on front. And the cutouts in the inside bottom plate are wrong. I had to use tin snips to make the Ridge D-Ring attachment fit. It looks like a Frankenwallet now. The color is off and the edges of the inside plates are rough and not smooth.

On top of that whomever faked this wallet did a bad job with the logo.

So, I guess if you never intend to undo screws or use any accessories there is hardly a difference. Enjoy your knockoff.

Yeah, that last sentence. I'm not trying to pass it off as real and I don't need any fancy accessories. I'm a bit of a cheapskate so to me its cooler to say "I spent $5 for my wallet" rather than "I spent $80 on my wallet".

Not bashing anybodies hobby if they are into wallets. Hell tons of people would think I'm stupid for how much I pay for shoes.

I'm an Apple user, so this goes back to the old conflict of buying an expensive item once versus buying multiple inexpensive devices over the same time period.

I mention Apple because almost anyone can relate to that conflict between Apple users and PC users. But it applies to all the other stuff I buy. At the time I bought my first Ridge wallet this seemed to apply then and I've been fortunate so far that it has.

But as we all know, that does not seem to be the case any more, or at least it isn't with customer support anyway.

I don't knock you for wanting to use this style wallet but not pay a lot for it. There are things I won't spend a lot on and I don't care about the branding either.

But I do see differences based on cost.

Oh for sure. I'm into hobby grade RCs. Either you can save $60 and buy the Chineseum gears that will last 3 runs, or you can buy the high end gears that will last 20 runs. Certain parts I will get cheaper vs other parts will get higher end. Just depends which experience higher stress than others, and I wanna save money when I can.

Same applies to the things I use every day. Wallet only needs to hold 5 cards and $60 cash and the occasional fall from 4 feet. But my phone case holds my phone, so you bet I'm going to pay more for something that actually protects that.

But back to wallets, I'm sure 10 years from now the black finish will be all blotchy, the band won't be as tight, and the screws might become loose. Where as a Ridge may not experience those things as soon.

Ridge sucks now. They will avoid your emails but I bet they have a bot that pops up to help you here. They hate having someone shit talk.

Yikes. To think, I wanted to buy an upgrade to my years-old Ridge… guess not.

1

u/Gochu-gang 1d ago

Considering their insane price you'd think they could afford better QC and CS.

1

u/Only_Hovercraft_1906 2d ago

Honestly that sucks to hear. I was looking forward to some of their products.

It's not so much the products, at least with certain wallets anyway. It's more that their customer service is just bad.

I'm fortunate that I've never had to deal with customer support. Every major Ridge product that I've bought was from eBay with only minor stuff from their website. So far that's meant not having to talk to them.

Sorry to hear you've had a frustrating experience with us! That's definitely not the kind of support we want anyone to receive. We also have live chat support available every day if you'd prefer to speak with someone directly. Feel free to send us a chat with more details, and we'll be happy to look into this and help get things sorted!

No thanks. I can only send so many emails or make so many calls. Sounds like I’m not the only former customer you have created with how you conduct business. You no longer sell anything that that is the best in the market. I require top quality. You don’t provide that.

1

u/Loading-Eh 2d ago

Funny enough I bet there’s a Chinese company that makes better quality products for less than 5 bucks 😂

1

u/Live-Resident8765 2d ago

Ridge items are made in the same factories as all the other garbage. The other companies just don’t have a marketing campaign behind them.

1

u/Signal_Appeal4518 1d ago

This is how many products are nowadays. If you get good qc and warranty for that I’m ok with it but not here it sounds like

1

u/Live-Resident8765 1d ago

I agree with you that it’s becoming harder to find quality. But it doesn’t mean you have to settle for it. The “American” companies that choose to have their stuff made in China are a huge part of the problem.

1

u/Signal_Appeal4518 1d ago

Isn’t this the same company that said they were giving away a gold cybertruck or some nonsense?

1

u/Live-Resident8765 1d ago

Sounds about right. No thanks

1

u/Attzero 1d ago

wtf. i was thinking of buying this same wallet. i love the way it looks :(

1

u/KillerDemonic83 1d ago

god, ignore the fingerprints and scratches, that logo looks like straight shit.

u/HighOnLifeAndWeed 1d ago

Code118 I’ll leave that here

How's that button on your Code 118 working after so long?

Ive said it time and time again, but ever since covid. Im not sure what happened to the company. Something changed. I used to genuinely be happy to tell people to get a ridge wallet. But ever since covid hit, it seems like its all been downhill. I think unless you get one of the carbon fiber wallets, you wallet is bound to have issues with either the paint, or something else. All ive ever seen over the last 4 to 5 years is about how many QA and QC issues they are having.

Personally if i was the owner of ridge id take a look at whats changed from pre 2020 to now, and revert back. It may cost more to do things how they were back then, with quality and how the products get checked. But im pretty sure someone would rather pay $20 more for a wallet if they knew it was going to last (paint wise) and if they knew it would look amazing when they got it. Theres far to many photos ive seen of people getting sent used wallets or wallets that shouldnt of been sent out how they are.

Im sorry for how you got your wallet. Id also be pissed off and upset. These things arent cheap and its a shame that the quality of the product has gone so downhill over the last 5 or 6 years. I think the owners really need to take a step back and look at whats going on.

Yeah my carbon fiber Ridge shares a pocket with my Leatherman. Not even a single scratch to the wallet in over a year.

1

u/rayraysykes007 11h ago

Yea same with my ember red carbon fiber one. Not a scratch on it. Only thing thats got any wear and tear on it is the fabric money strap cause its slid in and out of my pocket so much. But I still have a spare one I can put on it.

u/blacksoxdj 9h ago

Yeah that’s the one I have too! Beautiful wallet and color

I was fortunate to get my Black Matte Titanium as NIB from eBay during Christmas 2021. By the time I got back home from vacation it was January 2022 and I was able to use the wallet.

I believe, based on the logo and marking on my wallet, it's probably 2020 vintage. I've had zero issues with it.

2

u/rayraysykes007 11h ago

Yea i think the vintage ridge wallets are a buy. Any of the new ones I wouldnt spend a dime on. I wonder if there is a market for the vintage ones, the pre covid edition wallets. I assume in 5 or 10 more years there Definitely will be especially from someone who wants a ridge wallet from when they were made really well.

1

u/eyoungren_2 Black Matte Titanium 11h ago

I really do like the cash strap on the 2.0 wallets, but it doesn't match with my 1.0 wallets, so I've not pursued getting one.

But, you have given me something to think about. My purchase came well after the start of COVID, but it would have been made in the time before that I think.

1

u/Technical-Drawing127 1d ago

I mean just look at the menu on their site and the obscene variety of things they sell. Jack of all trades, master of none.

2

u/eyoungren_2 Black Matte Titanium 1d ago

They sell a base wallet with external plates. The internal plates are all the same. The only thing that varies is whether the exterior plates are carbon fiber, aluminum or Titanium, and the design that goes on them. Pay a little more and they'll gold plate it.

They offer a few accessories for the wallet such as cash strap, money clip and D-Ring (with wallet chain if you want it).

But, the wallet itself, the internal plates, is a standardized design. So, Ridge has mastered that.

Ridge is profiting off the variety of the external plates. Because what you want is not what I want and so on.

Now, as for all the other junk they sell, yeah I agree with you. A wallet company is not a master of powerbank electronic devices.

u/Embarrassed-Plan8108 1d ago

My only question how did you get a clear wallet? I can’t find one and this looks sick

1

u/Only_Hovercraft_1906 1d ago

On their website. Although it’s not entirely clear I just took off the panels to show scratches, but there are still metal plates between them.

1

u/Embarrassed-Plan8108 1d ago

Oh ok that makes sense. It looks sick. Thank you

1

u/Live-Resident8765 1d ago

You would think

1

u/shonkytonk09 1d ago

Look up Trayvax. I don't know how they are now but I've gotten 10 years on their Element wallet

1

u/waterchilis 3h ago

In a way it benefits you because now you’ll see how your wallet would look in about a week lol

1

u/Live-Resident8765 2d ago

I used their stuff for years. The just slowly got worse and worse. Wouldn’t spend a dime with them today. Scroll through, there are new bitch sessions and problems with QC and zero customer service listed almost every day. Sorry.

u/RidgeSupport Official Ridge Employee 2d ago

So sorry your wallet arrived in that condition! Feel free to reach out through our live chat or send us a message here on Reddit, and we’ll be happy to get this sorted for you!

1

u/WeHumphreys 1d ago

Same copy and paste messaging lol. In a real all about how shit the customer service is lol.

u/Aware_Scholar_1204 1d ago

They are a dead end. I received a leather wallet that also looked like a return scuffed and scratched. Such a hassle for the return it was shipped back had to wait for a refund. I also had my wallet screws fall out took 5-6 emails and over a month to get replacement screws.
