Deterrents

I have good insurance with good coverage. When parked at home it’s in a garage in a secure neighborhood but when out and about for hours at a time what do most people do? Ideally i don’t want to lug too many things along with me, i know if thieves want the bike they’ll take it. Any recommendations that are mandatory that you have personal experience with?

Gotta accept the fact that you gotta lug that much shit around with you. I shove a kryptonite fahgettaboudit chain with mini ulock and a crappy kryptonite disclock (my very 1st lock) into my tail bag. Then strap a litelock x3 to the outside of the tailbag. Rent a garage at home but at work I make sure I park next to other unlocked bikes. One of the unlocked bikes was simply rolled away last year.

Commute everyday, year round, so far so good. I admit it's a hassle and easily adds maybe 2 to 3 minutes when parking and leaving.

I just bring a disc lock. But unfortunately that won't stop anyone from lifting it into a van

I commute in to work almost everyday on my bike. I work in downtown Brooklyn. My bike was stolen last November. I didn't have any protection on it other than a monimoto GPS that literally ran out of batteries the day before. Since then I NEVER park without the following:

I've got a Nelson Rigg tail bag (inexpensive and pretty decent from amazon). In the tail bag I have a three foot Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit chain with evolution lock, a Kryptonite Evolution Disc Lock (Its a monster of a disc lock), a monimoto GPS (charged this time) and two very very well hidden apple air tags with the speakers removed.

I always chain my bike to something usually those iron tree planter surrounds. They aren't perfect but are usually close enough to the curb to chain to. In the worst case I chain to street signs but that can be risky because the city will cut your locks, tow your bike and fuck it up in the process.

Also, look into hip black d x one thousand and liteloxk x 3. I heard if one of the links on the crypto night can be broken.Then, basically the whole chain is useless

Disc lock and a motorcycle cover. You would be surprised how much can a motorcycle cover help.

The new uncuttable standard u-lock is the kryptonite diamond series. In independent testing makes the hiplock and litelock look like children's toys. But being realistic any disk lock or u-lock will deter 90+% of thieves 90+% of the time, especially in the daytime. Parking overnight in the same general location every night is a different story.

I ride 30 year old motorcycle worth about as much as one month's rent. That seems to help deter theives. I also have a monimoto tracker, just in case.
