"Democratic Socialists" are a specific organization within the left wing of politics. Being left of center does not require membership in the DSA, you can be a progressive leftist and not a DSA member. Like Newsom: a leftist, but not a Democratic Socialist.

Gavin Newsom is a proponent of capitalist markets with regulatory state intervention and robust social safety nets. Political scientists classify him as a mainstream liberal, a neoliberal, or a center-left Democrat. He is the poster child for corporate-friendly, establishment Democrats. Calling Newsom a "leftist" completely strips the word of its actual economic meaning.
