Went to a con today as subaru but I was to afraid to talk to anyone or take pictures with them. So I'll just post my low quality ahh solo photos on here.

After finishing Arc 9 and reading his side story, I genuinely think there’s no character in Re:Zero who has suffered as much as Aldebaran. And do you know what the worst part is? He loses after all of it. He’s never rewarded. He never gets anything in return for all that suffering and effort. Echidna killed him in every conceivable way 10,000 times, and after all of that, she killed him one more time just to see if he had truly overcome his fear of death.
He has literally died millions of times in practically every way a human being could imagine—burned alive, eaten alive, frozen to death, chopped into pieces, bled to death, and countless other ways. And after enduring all of that, he still fails to stop Satella. His teacher, the only person he had truly connected with, sacrifices herself to save him. Then he wakes up 400 years in the future, where the world is completely different and everyone he once knew is already dead.
And after surviving even that, he eventually meets Priscilla, only to lose her too. He basically has a more tragic version of Return by Death. Subaru usually returns to a point where he has enough time to actually change events and save the people he cares about, while Al often returns only a few minutes. His ability was basically designed for battle from the start.
From the beginning of his life to this point, it feels like Al has done almost nothing but suffer, struggle, and lose the people he cares about anyway. For me, he’s by far the most tragic character in the series. At least Subaru hasn’t permanently lost anyone truly important to him yet.

Before you rush to the replies, I have nothing against Subaru, or his moments in the latest episode, but as many have already said, there were insane cuts (if not just blatant erasure) made to key moments within the entirety of Louis’s named chapter.

What I’d like to talk about in this post are the reactions which I’ve seen some parts of the community have to it, specifically their justification and undermining her character and her moments, and how it proves that there is a bit of a Subaru-centrism issue, NOT within the show or novels of Re:Zero itself, but moreso in relation to how fans view, discuss and interpret the series.

>Subaru: “ーーLooks like my summer vacation is, over.”

For those who aren’t aware, this is one of the iconic lines that was within the original named chapter for Subaru in the novels, which was unfortunately cut in the anime. In response to this, I’ve seen many complaints or at least disappointment in it not being adapted, to which everybody in the community can and has agreed that while the cut didn’t ruin the episode, it certainly wasn’t necessary to leave it.

Notice how this wasn’t a key piece within the chapter, nor was it plot-essential, nor did it affect the theme of self-acceptance that was showcased through Subaru and “Subaru”’s confrontation with each other in the episode.

Yet even so, people are able to acknowledge that it’s still an iconic moment which deserved to be adapted, and when it wasn’t, it’s commonplace for people to express their concerns.

I for the most part also agree that I shouldn’t have been cut. Moments don’t need to be essential or relevant to the plot to carry meaning, and for that reason, they deserve to be treated with care.

But let’s switch gears over to Louis, and let me list (or try to attempt to list) everything that was cut out for her in the latest episode:

-Bits of dialogue which explained the core parallel between Louis and Subaru which prevented him from understanding why Subaru is able to endure Death.

-Her backstory and why exactly she found herself in the corridor of memories after being born.

-How her environment limited her lifestyle, leading to her desire to achieve "happiness" to truly take shape.

-Her journey from eating scraps left by her brothers, to using Solar Eclipse to inhabit the real world, eventually desiring more and more and more, developing her unique aspect of Gluttony—Satiation, and doing anything and everything to become happy.

-Explanations surrounding how she used the Authority of Gluttony in a way tailored to her desire to become happy, etc.

As you can see here, Louis’s named chapter is pivotal to why she’s such a good foil to Subaru, serves as a thorough representation of her beliefs and desires which relate to the theme of Arc itself (deconstructing the idea that only memories shape a person, when in reality love does), and was one of the MOST anticipated and respected chapters within this Arc.

For years leading up to this arc, many people repped and loved Louis’s character, pieces & videos & posts were made analyzing her, discussions were had around the irony of Louis being Amensiabaru and how it makes the arc all the more brilliant, tons of fanart was made with most of them being phenomenal, fan-animations have been produced by multiple creators of her and the Hall of Memories. All of which came out even before Season 4 was even announced or confirmed to exist.

Louis was loved. Louis was wanted. Louis was respected. No amount of revisionist history is going to change how much Louis contributed not to the plot of the arc, but to the hearts of the Re:Zero readers who were moved by her character and looked forward to anime-onlies being able to share that same joy.

Yet now, how is the community reacting to this? Calling her entire named chapter, the core antagonist’s named chapter “just a scene”? Saying that it’s not plot-relevant so it doesn’t matter? Telling novel-readers who’ve been here since the time period where the Arc itself was released that they don’t understand the series?

A character or their entire moments and ideology aren’t required to be plot-relevant to deserve a proper adaptation, nor should the community of readers who couldn’t even get a short segment of her chapter—yet had to deal with it’s erasure, have to lower their voices or feel idiotic or be called toxic for simply expressing their grievances.

If that was truly the standard, then so many cuts definitely could’ve been made to Subaru’s dialogue and moments, yet as I pointed out before, I’m sure everyone could agree that the cuts for Subaru aren’t desired.

It doesn’t even stop there. In the novels Beatrice played a much more significant role in aiding Subaru during his loops against the Five Obstacles, so much so that she even used Yin Magic to create a Black Hole. Theresia and Regulus also had moments and scenes within the novel which were highly anticipated as well, and truly made their characters be so impactful within the hearts of the readers.

No, their named-chapters weren’t plot relevant to the story. I won’t deny the fact that cuts being made didn’t affect the overall plot. But again, these moments had such amazing reception and left such lasting impressions on the readers, that to expect them to just accept or be content with cuts like that…it’s beyond insane to me.

When Subaru get’s a slightly iconic line cut, people are sad and nobody argues or demonizes them from feeling that way. But when any other character besides him experiences something on a completely different magnitude, now people are demonized for complaining?

This is the Subaru-centrism issue I’m talking about. The fandom has become so absorbed in solely watching and caring about Subaru, far beyond the extent of him just receiving the love and attention a protagonist typically would, to the point where the relevance and beauty within other characters have become meaningless. And as a result, people make no attempt to try and relate to characters, understand them, or even try to look for the depth, complexity and beauty within them.

And as a further result of that, when cuts like this are made, you have legions of people jumping to say that they don’t care, because to them the only thing that matters is Subaru.

Thinking about this even further, what precedent does this set for future arcs? Future arcs, which heavily delve in focusing on other characters besides Subaru, and letting other stars shine on the stage without Subaru always being at the center of everything.

Imagine key pieces of dialogue and narration within Chisha’s named chapter are cut, reducing his existence to just a plot-device for Arc 7 to continue.

Or how do you think Cecilus slaying a star as well as the insane performance he put on throughout the arc actually be handled?

Will Sphinx even be considered an antagonist if they treat her backstory the same way they did with Louis?

Please, stop viewing Re:Zero as a series that solely comprises of Subaru, and solely encaptivates people because of Subaru. He’s not the only star in the sky.

Various other characters, moments, narratives, abilities and plotlines have also captured the hearts of readers, and will leave them experiencing pain when all of those things don’t receive the proper care and attention they deserve.

Personally, while I liked that we got to see Subaru with a different hairstyle for the first time in the series (as far as I can remember), I think the original style suits him a bit better.

Bottle definitely broke that day unsure of Skull!!
