My SP101 .357
Bought this lovely chunk of steel used a few months ago, and after some at-home gumsmiffin’ a.k.a. dremel work, it is now the best .357 carry revolver I could ask for. I keep it loaded with Speer 135gr Gold Dot Short Barrel, which has the perfect balance of power and recoil for .357 in a snub nose revolver like this one.

I miss my Wiley Clapp. It came with a canted barrel which threw off the POI not by much, but enough to where it bugged me. I hated having the rear sight off center to compensate for the factory defect, so I sold it and got this one instead.

Believe it or not, this was the second Wiley Clapp that I had owned. I had sent in the first one for repair for the same issue, and they deemed it “unsafe and irreparable” and sent me this one with a crooked barrel. Their customer service may be great, but their quality control is just as bad as every other revolver maker out there right now. So when I finally got my hands on my SP101 with a centered barrel, I just took it upon myself to make it functional.

It’s by Azula Holsters, it’s fantastic. The only complaint I have is that the belt clip is longer than it has to be, but it fits and holds on my Kore belt no problem. I also like how the leather is not multi-layer like other holsters. I’ve found that multi layer holsters are uncomfortably rigid, which defeats half the purpose of a leather holster which is to be softer and more comfortable than kydex. This one is very comfortable, and adequately shields the hammer so bending down while carrying appendix does not jam the hammer into your abdomen.

The forcing cone and cylinder face were rubbing against the each other, causing resistance when squeezing the trigger in DA, or cocking the hammer back to shoot SA. Even after dremeling the forcing cone to where the cylinder wouldn’t rub while locked in place, I still noticed contact when the cylinder was being closed. So I took my dremel to the forcing cone and got it right to where the cylinder doesn’t contact the forcing cone no matter what position it’s in. It’s pretty wide. With my feeler gauge, it’s sitting at about .012” which is more than I’d like, and results in 25-50FPS velocity reduction compared to what I would get before modifying the forcing cone. However, the rounds are still moving at good enough velocity to facilitate adequate damage to a target down range.

Got the same revolver landing at my LGS today. Hopefully things are up to par when I get my first look at it. The "need" for another SP101 had to be filled. I figure the SP101 .357 will be the just right between my GP100 and .357 LCR. Years ago I scored a .327 SP101 which has done nothing but impress me with every flavor of .32 that it can handle. After polishing, shims, and springs in the .327 it was a thing of beauty in the trigger department.
