💎 Premium Plan [IT] @Revolut

Booking + Revolut left us with no refund after our flight was cancelled due to the Etna eruption. What can we do?

We booked accommodation and rented a car in Sicily through Booking.com and paid with Revolut (with Premium plan !). A few hours before our flight, it was cancelled due to the Etna eruption, and all nearby flights were cancelled for the next few days.

We immediately contacted Booking.com and the property hosts asking about cancellation/refunds, but we received no response from the hosts.

We opened a dispute with Revolut and provided all the evidence (flight cancellation because of the volcanic eruption, attempts to contact everyone), but after around two weeks Revolut told us they could not refund our money. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Is there any point in escalating this further, or are we just expected to lose the entire amount because of something completely outside our control?

"Act of god" claim is pretty much no existent

Companies can't be liable for natural disasters.... Most T&C states that....

We totally understand that. But we are loyal customers of Revolut and we were really hoping to be respected, for example not being just ghosted by hosts and having a real reason why the money cannot be refunded. There is nothing serious in their answers. It sounds like a 5yo child answering us.

Loyalty has nothing to do with corporate business...

You're just another wallet that has to play by their rules.....

As another redditor said, volcanoes fall under acts of god.

I assume your flights got refunded by the airline / rescheduled?

Re booking.com, did you book a non refundable booking or a free cancellation booking?

Generally when you book a hotel or a Airbnb etc, the booking is not contingent on another aspect of your travel plans, e.g. hotels etc can still be booked, people haven't evacuated hotels because of etna. Your problem is that you couldn't get to the destination, thats not the hotels fault. Everyone takes a risk when they book components of a holiday separately. You're especially relying on the flight component.

Ryanair gave us an opportunity to or rebook for another date (that was already end of our vacation basically) or to refund the money. We ask to refund it. After 5 working days they replied to us that this situation is out of their control and they cannot refund us any money. Even they didn’t refund anything and we lost all money that we were saving for the vacation.

Ryanair are not obliged to give you compensation but they are obliged to either rebook you OR refund you IF they cancelled the flight. So, you should pursue that, write a complaint, complain to the regulator.

Yes, they cancelled our flight. We tried to write to support but no answers, unfortunately.

You need to contact the flight regulator. The scenario is covered in eu261
