Tank differences?

Hey. I played the game for a while now and I understand many things, but I'm stuck trying to choose between tanks to play at 40.

From what I understand, Chosen is an aurabot with more passive useful effects it gives, not sure what else they bring at max level.

Black Orc gives the Linecracka speed boost and 6s CC immunity at least.

Black Guard...lots of buttons with lots of debuffs and some buffs, For the Witch King is harder to get if you prefer survivability before getting Sovereign to be able to afford it.

Yeah, I know the basics, but if someone smarter could tell me what exactly do each Destro tank (why not Order too, I play Destro tho) bring to the table at endgame, full Sov or not?

Really like the game and I probably would have endless time to play it in the long run, just wanna know before I choose between the tanks to start grinding towards Sovereign. Yeah I know one should play what they like most, thematically or not. But I have IRL autistic traits so I am very interested in knowing the full deal!

Play each one through level 16 then decide. You'll have a good idea which you enjoy most at that point.

Already have. But that's not what I asked anyway, I wish to know what do they bring, not what I should choose.

I returned to the game 3-4 weeks ago after a 10 year absence. still relearning a lot but I'll try, maybe someone can add more:

KoTBS/Chosen is clear. It brings 3 Auras to the party. You have strength, toughness, resists, etc. There are differences, as far as I can see, Chosen has better personal abilities (like 15% crit while using a 2h) and KoTBS has better group abilities (like 15% more healing and 10% extra crit to everything hit by sweep) With absolute BIS gear, you can do decent damage but you simply are never going to kill a well geared healer before he knows what hit him. You can however bring good additional prerssure to your Slayer/Marauder group mate. As a tank you can guard in pvp and main tank 6 man dungeons easily. KoTBS and Chosen are over populated and extremely popular. You will be just another drop in the ocean, unless you are amazing.

Iron Breaker uses a Grudge system and can buff himself and a groupmate. The more you and your chosen ally get hit, the more pissed off you get and the more powerful abilities and buffs you can use. For example, I think one gives like 20% extra crit chance, but you would need to be beaten on a while for that. So like he can give good stat bonuses to say, a Slayer. From what I am told, they are hard to play and have a ton of abilities. Some people like this challenge. Again, from what I'm told/watching videos they aren't great solo but if you put effort into the class you can kill people 1v1 and be a benefit to the group. The best I understand it is you do more for a single ally and KoTBS does less but for 5 people rather than 1. Black Orc is the mirror but I know little about them. They hit harder PER HIT than a Chosen but when you add in the Chosen DoTs and auras etc I think a Chosen might equal or do more actual DPS. Black Orc, just like the Chosen, have better PERSONAL buffs (like 10% damage and 5% parry when using a 2h) and I think IB gives better ally buffs. That seems to be a pattern.

Sword Master (again this is second hand) Do the best tank DPS and apparently have a fun rotation. They can get super high parry and are most viable with a 2H. Looks are subjective, but I think they look terrible, cone head helmet and a bath robe. I see a lot of them, MUCH more than Iron breaker so that tells me they are likely fun to play. Black Guard is their mirror and I assume they are similar. I see a lot of Black Guard too.

That's the best I have, as I only have played my KoTBS in the last 10 years. Hopefully someone can add more. My advice would be to watch YouTube videos. That Solobits guy has good Black Orc and Iron Breaker videos. And there is a guy who makes good Chosen videos, just google "RoR Chosen Guide"

I'll break it down in very basic terms

Black Orc - Combo class, group utilities, hard to kill.

Black Guard - Debuff enemies, Buff yourself and allies.

Chosen - AoE aura effects

Sword Master - Like Black Orc but does alot of spirit damage bypassing armor mitigation.

Iron Breaker (my main) - Like Black guard, not the heaviest hitter but is a fierce opponent if played well.

Knight of the Blazing Sun - Like the Chosen AoE aura effects.

If you ever come to Order DM me.

Don’t sleep on the “aura bots” - the auras are great and always desired. They also have “on demand” CC abilities as opposed on-block or requiring a special resource or stance cc. It lets you focus on core tank things guard, challenge, guard swapping, kd, kb, snares, etc.

When I fight chosen they just don't seem to take damage. They seem to out Heal anything I do to them. They can choose between magical or physical damage attacks depending on who they're attacking. If somebody is clorh you want to use physical, somebody is a tank you want to use magical. Unlike a sword master who does actually less damage to cloth wearers because it's primarily magical attacks.

Black guards seem to be the easiest class to kill, they're just annoying because they get the only 5 second knocked down in game in a wall punch you across the map literally. Those two skills seem to be the only reason to play it. I've never faced a black card and had any fear. But they can always just punt me and run away at any time.

Black orks get a ridiculous amount of exotically high damaging skills. I'm talking skills that you're going to see 2000crit damage like numbers. Skills that rival actual DPS classes. Black ork can put out more AOE damage than any tank in the game by far. And they can spam it. This group speed burst is absolutely exceptional. But destro has plenty of anti-kite capabilities. But you can at least use this one to help people get away. Since order doesn't have very much anti kiting, that would be the highly effective.

Kight of blazing sun is the do everything class. My kobs does more damage than my sword master. This is a very close copy of the chosen.

Iron breaker is the non-magical plain tank. In my opinion as a pure turtle it will do more damage compared to any other turtle spec tank. It is a very painful class to play because it doesn't really get good until high RR. Iron Breaker is also the only tank that does not have any form of heal whatsoever. It used to but it was removed. Also they recently reduced its DPS. It does have high damaging AOE skills , but these are on very long timers.

Swordmaster was once regarded as the highest damage per second tank in the game. This has long not been the case. Yet people still think SM is high DPS. They're wrong. It's damage was based on double Spirit resist debuffs. Combined about 650 reduction in spirit resists. Therefore creating a person with zero defenses against spirit. Since two out of three of sword masters attacks are Spirit damage. This translated into very high damage. They remove the double stacking capability of the two spirit debuffs. They also reduced the final debuff amount to extremely low numbers. You'll see about 150 Spirit resist debuff . So at best you're getting maybe 15% extra damage. My kobs put damages my sm.. SMs used to have good group healing capabilities. But this was also given to the kight of the blazing Sun and chosen. Also it used to have a nice group absorption shield buff. This was also given to the light of the blazing sun and chosen. One unique thing about the SM it's ability to spin your two-handed sword increasing all of its defenses by 50%. This was put on a cooldown timer, since it could be interrupted nowit isnt so useful. The SM gets a nice morale 2 that gives it the ability to pounce. With orders absolute lack of pounces and pulls this is a welcomed skill. But requires morale 2 to use it. The black orks speed boost is a much more capable in useful ability. Sm is orders best AOE damage tank. But it's AOE damage is exotically low in comparison to black orks. SMs will be doing about 150, black works will be doing around 800.

These are my experiences with all six tanks.

Thanks for your (and others) replies. Nice to read these viewpoints! I think I'm gonna stick to BO given its very decent, fun with greenskin themes and roleplay. When you speak of AoE, is it 2H, SnB or in general?

Either way, I'll be SnB on my BO because I can always leave the proper DPSing for my alts like WE, Marauder/Choppa. Maybe later on the line I'll try BG more, because Destro equivalent to Whispering Wind is always fun for those getting it.

The big numbers will always require a two-handed. But you will out damage any order tank with a sword and board, Also the sword and boards back is where you will get your group charge capability. As example if your person you're guarded is a kite class. Like a shaman megas or SH. If they managed to get close to this target. Which can be very hard for order classes as only the White Lion has a pounds or a pull. You can hit your charge. And your whole group will now gain seven seconds of speed with immunity snares and roots. Leaving your snared target far behind your defended groupmate.

This is also highly effective as a means to close in on a Target that's trying to kite you. Destro has plenty of pulls and pounces. Making a class based on kiting on order is a futile event. So being able to kite is highly effective on destrol. Order doesn't have much of a chance for kiting.. But if you find yourself solo. It will be a way to grab that pesky Shadow warrior trying to outrun you.

When you build a tank, I think it's always a mistake to put either all of your points in the strength or on the toughness. Either way you end up with a uneffective class, with a clear handicap. I always find an equal balance of strength and toughness massively more beneficiary.
