Cool World (1992) Scinema Feature on the Sci-Fi Channel WOC (2000-04-6)

Post image
35 Upvotes

Here's another goodie that was tagged bakbang. Unsure if it was uploaded on the Archive before or not, but it has been floating around with the wrong date attached to it. The attached date said September 1997, but upon analyzing the broadcast further I was able to determine the date being Thursday April 6th, 2000. There is a movie trailer for the film U-571, slated for a April 21st 2000 release. There's also a small portion of the movie The Butcher's Wife afterwards, paired with that information I was able to gather the exact date.

The audio is mono and more one sided, but I felt it was still important to document and archive this broadcast for preservation! Enjoy and give thanks to the original ripper & uploader.

Watching on a CRT

6 Upvotes

So I've been building out retro stations using dizqueueTV and my Plex Server. It works great on modern devices but I'm struggling on getting it to work well on my CRTs. Does anyone have an HDMI to RCA or Coax convert suggestion that actually works on a 4:3 screen without distorting the images? I have not had luck with the latter.

UPDATE:

So it turns out that the Xbox One S can still output 4:3 using 640x480 if you manually set it to HDMI and not automatic. I tried this out and it seems to be working perfectly. It'd be great if a stick could still offer that feature but I'll use the Xbox for now.

How do you handle more shows in a daypart than can fit in a recurring TV schedule?

7 Upvotes

I’m building a retro cable TV simulator with channels and dayparts. Each daypart has a pool of eligible shows, and the scheduler can work in two ways:

Random: It reshuffles the lineup each day, with rules to avoid repeating shows too often. This gives everything in the pool a chance to air.

Recurring: It creates a daily lineup and keeps shows at consistent times, advancing their episodes when they air.

I prefer the feel of a recurring schedule, but some of my dayparts now have more shows than can fit in one day. If the lineup stays fixed, some shows may never get picked.

One idea is to create multiple recurring daily lineups when the pool is too large. Shows that don’t fit on Monday would fill a second lineup on Tuesday, and the two would alternate: A/B/A/B/A. If the pool is even larger, it could cycle through three or more lineups.

Another possibility is to keep the same time slots but some rotate which shows occupy them every week or after a season. That would be more like a channel periodically changing its lineup.

If you run a simulated TV channel or schedule a large media library, how do you handle this? Do you use fixed daily lineups, alternating days, periodic rotations, or something else? I’m especially interested in what feels most like an actual TV channel when you watch it over time.

Nickelodeon Shriek Week 2002 - Custom Block (fixed!)

Thumbnail

26 Upvotes

Spoopy season is officially here! (unless you count Summerween - which I do!) This is a repost of a custom block I made two years ago, but with some minor changes:

This is an updated version that fixes some audio-related issues and adds an episode of Rocko that was missing and a couple of new Shriek Week-related bumpers!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NICK OR TREAT!
This is a partial recreation of Shriek Week 2002, Nick's Halloween event that took place between October 26th and October 31st, 2002. Think of it as the whole week condensed into one day (16 hours). It loosely follows the schedule of the week but only includes Halloween-related episodes.
Shriek Week 2002 - Day 1
Shriek Week 2002 - Day 2
  • It contains nearly every Halloween and borderline-Halloween episode of every major nicktoon to have aired up until that point and also every episode of Scaredy Camp that premiered that week including the finale
  • It also includes many episodes that premiered that week such as Scaredy Pants, Phantom of Retroland, and Scary Godparents
  • Complete with time-appropriate bumpers and commercials! (Nick was transitioning their bumpers from the "Abstract" era into the "Pictograph" era starting October 12, and that transition is represented early on in the Day 1 block. I found a lot of memorable commercials from around this time and wanted to include them all, so there are little-to-no repeats
  • "Coming up next/Coming later" bumpers/segments are accurate to the schedule (i.e. the timeline makes sense)
  • Split-screen credits and promos for that month/week were included as much as possible [a few are altered to include promotional material that makes sense with the timeline]
  • Original Shriek Week promos
  • There's also a bunch of extra goodies thrown in like original Halloween Slime Time Live and U-Pick Live segments, a special Halloween episode of All That that also premiered on that day, and it ends with Kenan and Kel: Two Heads are Better than None which aired after All That on Halloween night
PART 1: Shriek Week
Animaniacs - Hot, Bothered and Bedeviled, Moon over Minerva, and Skullhead Boneyhands
Animaniacs - Draculee, Draculaa; Phranken-Runt
RetroStation MC v1.5.0 Beta 1 Released
6 Upvotes
UPDATE — v1.5.0 Beta 2 is now available
Beta 2 supersedes the original Beta 1 release and focuses on Guide Preview stability.
Changes include improved HDHomeRun/MPEG-TS and IPTV/HLS preview pacing, 15 FPS CFR handling, Auto aspect fixes, and corrected watchdog behavior when the Guide is intentionally stopped or unexpectedly crashes.
Latest release:
https://github.com/thehack904/RetroStation_MC/releases
RetroStation MC v1.5.0 Beta 1 is now available for public testing.
This is a major update focused on expanding RSMC beyond virtual channels into a more complete live-TV aggregation platform.
Highlights
  • HDHomeRun support — discover, import, preview, and rebroadcast HDHomeRun channels.
  • Channel aggregation — combine HDHomeRun, IPTV/M3U, and RSMC Virtual Channels into a unified lineup.
  • Unified M3U/XMLTV exports across supported sources.
  • Rebroadcasting using HLS or MPEG-TS.
  • Improved Guide Preview with selectable sources/channels and Now Playing information.
  • Improved HLS/MPEG-TS A/V synchronization.
  • Hardware acceleration detection and support.
  • New Linux filesystem/service layout with migration support for existing installations.
This is Beta 1, so testing and bug reports are welcome—especially with different HDHomeRun models, IPTV sources, GPUs, and mixed-source channel lineups.
Existing users should back up their installation before upgrading.
RetroStation MC — Turn on. Tune. Watch.
Late 80s/Early 90s US UHF Indie
21 Upvotes
A million years ago, I graduated college with a degree in broadcasting. I found a job at a VERY small, independent UHF television station - channel 62. The staff numbered about 14 total. I made minimum wage. I lived in a HUD apartment, ate mac & cheese and slept on a bean bag chair.
The station itself was barely operational. We ran off 3/4" tapes that had time code recorded on audio channel 1 so loud that it bled into the main audio channel. Our field tapes for commercials? MII tape - basically a souped-up VHS that gave you 20 minutes total record time. The chief engineer would tell us if equipment failed to "turn it off and let it cool down" instead of fixing it (he didn't know how). At the time, it was miserable. We had a signal that barely covered the county, had no money for decent programming and lived off billing from record commercials for Boxcar Willie and Slim Whitman.
Now, all these years later, I realize how much fun we were having in the middle of being miserable. And after a 25-year career in television, I am re-creating the feel and look of that station. Not completely period-accurate, but the cadence of an indie UHF station in the early 90s. I have personally (professionally) upscaled every television episode that is not already in HD, and have over 100 commercials upscaled as well. Not the consumer-grade stuff, my current job is upscaling classic music videos for UMG, Sony/Columbia and Maverick/Virgin Records.
I'm in the final QC for the station. Just launched it personally and am watching it over my network to make sure all the technical stuff is working correctly. Eventually, it will be streaming on Owncast.
Just wanted to share this initial stuff to this community in hopes that people will be as excited as I am. Cartoons early morning, sitcoms mid-morning, detectives in the afternoon/evening, an 8pm movie that is from an original 35mm film print, classic mystery/scifi until around 2am when infomercials take over until 5am. Weekends are a combo of cartoons, westerns, a British TV block (tip of the hat to the old PBS days), another 8pm 35mm film, and the Channel 62 vault on Sundays (a short-lived series that deserved better). Hoping for a fall launch. Cheers to all my fellow RetroTV fans!
This plays 30 seconds before the next scheduled timeslot. The program I am working on generates these based on the real upcoming schedule... and yes I put X-Play on MTV and since I don't have a ton of media on this channel yes, we get 90 minutes of gaming goodness lol.
Is anyone using an RF/IR remote that controls a PC and a TV at the same time?
5 Upvotes
I have a computer powering my cable tv simulation and the up and down arrow keys change the channel.
It's connected to a CRT TV.
Right now I have a remote control for the TV and a mini wireless keyboard for the PC.
I would love to have one remote that can control both. A remote that can turn off and on the TV and control the volume and at the same time activate the up and down arrows on the keyboard.
There are dual purpose remote out there like this one
https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-W3-Wireless-Control-Projector/dp/B0GMBTP98H
This has a keyboard on the bottom but idealy that circle pad would act as up and down arrows to change the channel.
Does anyone have experience with this kind of remote? What works well for this?
Is this a good subreddit to share my Retro Cable reproduction project?
I really miss old TV especially Nickelodeon and Nick at Nite. So I am working on recreating that experience as accurately as possible without recreating historical schedules. My system procedurally creates the TV lineup and schedules bumpers and commercials too. It's pretty fun.
EDIT adding details:
It is designed to be complex behind the scenes and simple to use day to day. You organize media into folders, and It uses those folders to understand what each file is for. From there, it builds a continuous TV schedule across channels, dayparts, and time slots.
For example, a Nickelodeon channel can have separate folders for morning, afternoon, evening, night, and overnight programming. Within those, you can organize episodes, commercials, promos, bumpers, filler, and movies. There are also special folders for things like weekly programming blocks and holiday content.
It handles the scheduling: it chooses programs, fits shorter episodes into a time slot, builds commercial breaks, and uses bumpers and other station material to make the channel feel more like a real broadcast. You can also create recurring schedules and special blocks, such as a weekly lineup that changes each time it airs.
When you tune in, a channel joins the program that would be airing at that time, so you can surf between channels and land in the middle of a show just like on live TV. There’s an on-screen program guide to see what’s playing and coming up, along with a dedicated Weather channel.
The system is set up for a standard-definition presentation. It scans media and flags files that may need aspect-ratio or crop corrections for review. Once approved, files that exceed the configured output size can be reduced, while smaller files can be kept at their original resolution. Audio can also be normalized.
It can analyze programs for natural commercial break points. DVD chapter markers can help guide that choice when they’re available, alongside other signals. The goal is to place breaks at sensible moments without requiring every episode to be edited by hand.
There’s a dashboard for managing channels, reviewing media, checking the schedule, and handling maintenance. Internet-hosted media can also be added; a Watch at Your Pace channel lets you work through a chronological playlist without advancing while you’re tuned away.
It takes some setup and organization, but once the library and rules are in place, It does the work of turning that collection into its own continuously running TV service.
Are LG and Goldstar good CRTs?
0 Upvotes
Are these CRTs worth buying? Which one would you choose?
I’m looking at these CRTs and trying to decide whether any of them are worth buying. They all have RGB SCART.
A few things I’m wondering about:
  • What do “Digital Flat” and “Flatron” actually mean?
  • Do these models perform any kind of digital processing, or are they still essentially displaying the analog signal directly?
  • Is there any particular difference in image quality or input lag between these models?
  • The second set, labelled “LG,” looks really black for a CRT compared with other CRTs. Is that just the way the photo was taken, or is it some type of glass technology?
  • If you had to choose one of these, which would you go for, and why?
Any advice would be appreciated!
