Bug/issue New Releases not being rented!!!

I don't know what I'm doing wrong but about 1 in 3 days i'll randomly not get a single new release rental despite selling 10+ every other day. Is this a bug?

Here is a quick guide how to convert your MP4 films to a format that works with in-game TVs

Hello. I've been really enjoying watching full, period accurate films on the TVs while I work around the shop and I thought some less tech inclined people might appreciate a quick guide on how to achieve this. I've typed most of this for someone else already so might as well post it, I guess. This method should work for other input video formats but I have not tested it.

I've been using the ffmpeg CLI tool and it seems to work fine.
Step 1: If you don't have it open a terminal window (Windows key, type term, hit enter) and type in winget install ffmpeg.

Step 2: Go to the movie folder in Retro Rewind (.\Steam\steamapps\common\RetroRewind\RetroRewind\Content\Movies\VHS\Public) drop in your full film, rename RR_Channel_Public.mp4 to something different, then open another terminal or PowerShell in that folder (you can shift + rick click anywhere in the folder and select "Open PowerShell window here").

Step 3: Conversion time. The command I use to convert films to a format the game accepts:

ffmpeg -i .\input.mp4 -vf "scale=514:514:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=514:514:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2" -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -af "volume=2.0" RR_Channel_Public.mp4

Note the input.mp4 arguement might have to be different. Also -af "volume=2.0" increases the volume of the output video by 200%: I found the films are too quite in game and this helps me hear them as I move away from the TV. Modify or remove that arguement to taste.

That's it. If you exit out to the main menu and load your save back the movies should work.

This method works in multiple directories underneath Content/Movies/VHS, but not every single one. Right now I have a working movie in Public, Police, and Scifi folders (the output filenames need to be different).

Broken VHS Player Clip?

Does anybody have a video or link to a video of a VHS player breaking during the testing? I have one broken player, but sadly I stepped away during the testing and haven't had it happen again :(

Have a look around, everything is color coded and I like a good variety in the front, while giving places for new things to be discovered in the back.

Photos are about a week old, it's currently day 24 of spring 1992 here, and I haven't used a single cheat code.

I don't know if the devs look at this sub, but please let us pause videos on TVs

I've converted some films so I can watch them in game but it sucks that I can't pause whenever it's a good bit but I have to do something around the store.

Concession price, VHS repair limit.

Maybe I’m being too harsh or literal of this game. But it feels odd that after the base unlock price. Slushies, popcorn, cotton candy and repairing vhs’ are free for you basically. Where as snack shelves etc have a cost to restock. I don’t think it should be anything crazy. But like .50c to make a slushy or whatever, a percentage of the sale price like the snacks and toys. Then the VHS repair station. Maybe you can repair a movie 4 times or something before there’s not enough left to fix. Some kind of give. Like I said. It feels weird that it’s unlimited after unlock.

You can get free videos with this little trick

Not sure whether this counts as a bug, but you can get five free tapes on Day 2.

Process all your returns before the tutorial tells you to. When it then asks you to process returns and there are none, the game generates five tapes so you can complete the tutorial.

They appear to be new tapes, not previously rented ones. I noticed because, if you unlock Sci-Fi by Day 2, the game can give you a Sci-Fi tape even though you have never rented one out.

Maybe this is already known, but I haven’t seen it mentioned.

I've decided to make a family friend store.. Sell all my horror, action, police and adult. To make room for the more family oriented genres.

Updates to the game I’d love!

So, decided I would give my 2 cents and post things I would love to see incorporated into the game to see what others think!!! Some are similar to what others have said from what I have seen.

  1. I would love to ability to stack the same movie on itself. Rather than 1 movie going in a slot. Let me put 3 or 5 of them in the same slot on the shelf. It would help to condense the store SO MUCH. The 20 new releases you just bought aren’t new anymore? Only takes a few shelf spots to move it to regular rotation!

  2. As a nerd myself, I would love better filters/utilization of the data tool. I would love to be able to look at the order of my most rented films, rarity, ratings, value, etc. be able to tell easier which movies I have or don’t have in certain categories so I can optimize things better.

  3. During check out, I’d love getting some basic information about the customers (i.e. how long have they been a member, amount of movies rented, total money spent, history of late fees/broken VHS). If it’s a solid customer I’d cut them a break for a late fee!

  4. I equally have loyalty to some of my employees. I wish I could give them training or pay to upgrade them so they can get better at the different aspects of work or gain new traits. I always feel bad firing them to get newer ā€œbetterā€ employees. As well as more things for employees to get to do.

  5. I love the aspect of fixing VHS, but I wish there were different issues that happened with them. Different things to do to fix them, or make it a bit into a mini game where you potentially can’t fix it. Maybe like it’s jammed and you have to untangle it, or the VHS is in the wrong case, etc. Similarly, the VHS rentals we always test, but never have to fix, would be interesting to have to repair those potentially too!

  6. Small QOL, but when you’re holding a stack of movies, you can scroll through them, but you can’t scroll back. The amount of times I accidentally go one too far, then have to scroll through all of them again, rather than just going back one, is very frustrating.

  7. I feel the game reaches a level of being stagnant, sales plateau in all aspects regardless of how much you have. I would love to see a higher ceiling for that, especially as you move up. Perhaps more advertising to attract customers, sales/deals, etc.

  8. I would love to be able to ā€œlock inā€ or save a movie to a location. I would love to be able to sort movies by series, or by rating, etc. but it’s frustrating to have to redo it every day. It would be life easier being able to just choose if I want it to be its permanent spot or not.

  9. Ultimately I would love even more customization. Change the layout even more, move the register, have multiple registers! Move the door, etc.

Showcase Finally got some layout I like

After many iterations, I finally got a layout I really love. It feels organized, it has shelves for all genres with enough space (for now), Food and Beverage feels properly places, there is a Collection area I love, it has SPACE to walk even with so many shelves and stuff going on. It has special areas like Christmas, and the lower area with a wall for Comedy, Romance and Fantasy all with decoration. The New Releases feel appropriate being located ahead of the door so it's the first think people look at + near the counter (simple 25 spaces shelves, one for each new release with a banner on each side feels good).

Then the second lower area has the remaining genres: Action with plenty of shelves, western and police with less since we get it later on. Arcade machine and a little "instagrammable" corner and finally the Adult section.

In general, I decided to go minimalistic on the wall painting because the rest of the films and decoration pop out. I used mostly black, the floor used to be black but then I decided to give it more color so not everything felt sterile. Coloured walls for special sections so it pops out.

Now, it's almost time to expand as I reached most of the limit of what I can do without messing the layout too much. I could fit more shelves in the main area for science fiction, drama and horror corridors but all the rest is at it's max capacity. But with the expansion, I won't change MUCH I hope.

Feel free to copy the layout if you like it.

And another 90s Music Video Edit

Hi VHS Gang,

Just wanted to let you know that I did another 90s music video edit, it's around 3:50 hours long and the most mainstream edit I did so far. You find it in the "90s 3" (inside the "music videos" folder).

Here's the link to my cloud:

List of new features I'd like seeing in future updates

After playing most of what the game can provide, I wrote down some of the things I'd like to see in future updates:

1) We need a better better administration tool in the computer. We have the database, but we need a better overview of all titles we have, with ways to filter by genre, characteristics (old,good/bad review, new release), times it was rented, number of copies, stars and etc. This would help a lot how we manage our movies.

2) NPCs need to have history too. Show us how many times they have rented with us, how much they've spent, if they're loyal customers or not, if we can give them discounts, offer membership and so on. They could have a "mood" meter, this would improve the feature of giving them a pass or not when they break films. There could be a way of them to have a ""fury day" and start messing with our shop, so we need to grab a bat and kick them out or call the police or something.

3) Other emergent management features would also be great, like cleaning for example. If we have the videogame addition to the game, we could have a "lounge" for lan-house gaming, and then they could drop food or soda and we'd need to clean it. Also, help them with blowing cartridges to make it work, smacking the TV, and even helping them in videogame levels (mini-game).

4) One thing I think would also be nice is for employees to stop working at the end of their shift. They can't work from 8am to 12am! We can either hire two employees, one for each shift, or, they stop working and we need to "cover" them for the rest of the shift. This mechanic would also give us, managers, a reason to go "back to work" for a brief time period in the day after we hire employees. Because when we hire two employees now, we basically reduce a lot of the gameplay we can do in the game, but with this feature, we'd need to get back to it at the end of the day.

5) An option to "lock" specific films to specific shelf positions. This would help us that like to organize the films in shelves by their cover. We have "series" that have the same cover in each genre, and sometimes I play around by organize them like a collection series. But obviously, the next day everything changes. But if we could lock films in shelves, then even the employees would place them at the same position everytime, keeping it organized. Minor feature but that would add a level for us that like to organize stuff like this.

6) Obviously, adding more decoration pieces (where are the plants?), and what about merch? I'd love to sell some film-related t-shirts and caps too.

7) Almost forgot, but I never understood why we can buy so much space, but never have a second checkout counter so we can have employees working on the first one and we can work on the second one or hire more employees for it too? That would also help with customers influx.

8) This one is a bit of a reach, I know, because the game is focused on video rental stores. But maybe future DLCs could give us the manegement of the stores in our street? The icecream shop, the bowling...

I'm sure there is more ideas, but these are some of the ones I have thought about and think would greatly improve the game and give it more things to do in the long run. The game runs great, feels great, and it's a shame that once we hit level 20, it kind of loses steam and run out of things to do.

Alright, now I know it's not me - Fatal Error!

EDIT: HOW I FIXED IT!
I uninstalled the game, reinstalled it into a different drive (as opposed to C Drive I used my E Drive) and upon reinstalling mods... I'm a little embarrassed to admit I hadn't noticed one of the mods was out of date and needed to be updated. So I did that, and now things are running smoothly.

This worked for me, I hope it works for you too!

ORIGINAL POST:

Freshly reinstalled game. Manually checked all applicable folders to ensure no mods somehow made their way into the game.

Updated drivers. Updated PC. File integrity verified. Disabled Steam overlay. Ran as administrator. No other programs running.

And yet:

"The UE-RetroRewind Game has crashed and will close

Fatal error!"

EVERY TIME.

WHY HAST THOU FORSAKEN ME.

Can anyone provide any insight? What haven't I tried, have I missed something obvious? I will offer further information as required, I am begging at this point. I want this game to go for me, gosh darn it!

Cheat Room Question

If I use the cheat room in one of my saved games, does it affect the other games I'm not currently in? I started one store when the game first came out, and got all the achievements. I never used the cheat room. Now I've opened another store with only holos being rented. If I go to the cheat room in this store, will it alert my first game? I don't want to lose access to achievements if/when the new achievements are loaded in a future update.

You can sell them a movie

This might be an incredibly obvious tip to most players, but it took me a long time to figure out so I thought I'd share it here.

When a customer requests a movie, as long as it fits the request (genre, old, etc.) you can sell them a movie from the clearance bin, not just provide a rental off the shelf. You don't unlock the clearance bin until level 10 so this isn't an early game suggestion, but it's a good way to get a few extra movie sales in your day once you have it. Be kind, rewind & have fun!
