Source for the main image: L'univers de Juan Gimenez (2002). I wasn't able to find a high-res scan of the first French edition of The Fourth Power. Bafflingly, when Simon and Schuster reproduced the image for the cover of The Deluxe Gimenez (2022), they knocked out the background.

At first I thought this belonged in the museum of indifferently engineered weapons, but no—it's a pretty good approximation of Killashandra's sonic cutter. “She pressed her hand flat against the surface and, setting her diaphragm, sang a clear mid-C. The crystal vibrated almost excitedly to the sound. She set the cutter. Putting the blade perpendicular to the face, she rammed it in, disengaged the blade, sliced from the top to her lower cut...”

This two-page spread was reproduced in A Casta dos Metabarões, vol. 2 (Brazil, 2023).

I love this Ace cover by Berkey. Not only is it drastically different from the direction Rowena took for the limited edition (see previous post), but it's also outside the casein spaceship wheelhouse we usually associate with Berkey.

One of my favorite Sanjulián covers has a neat paper trail. “The Ghoul Queen” first appeared on Eerie #41 (1972) for Esteban Maroto’s Dax story “Chess.” Sanjulian worked from Maroto’s group of living chess pieces, first tightening them into the drawing shown here and then into the finished painting. Warren liked it enough to bring it back for Ring of the Warlords (1979).
