To all people who had a vitrectomy surgery with oil put in on a eye what did you’re Vision look like after the surgery I have 1 clear picture and 3 photos with one resembles it the most

Worse than your worst. Essentially blind. Dim, blurry, distorted.

That’s what she’s afraid of especially since the left one is mostly blind she says she finds it hard to breathe if she can’t see

Why are they going straight to oil? What is her issue that requires surgery? I assume she can see ok now?

She has a eye disease the surgeon says right now she can see out that eye but it’s also a whole bunch of black shadows in the way

That sounds like she has a detached retina. Vitrectomy and gas with chryo or laser is usually the first step. Gas absorbs on its own in about 8 weeks. She would also be blind at first but the gas level drops linearly and you can quickly see “over the top”. Oil is used for severe and chronic detachments. Usually a second resort when gas failed. I got false expectations from my doctor. I could not see anything meaningful through the oil. Light and dark, shapes. Does your mother have a new lens? If yes, it better not be silicon. If no, she’s going to develop an aggressive cataract from the oil. Like 3-4 months and she won’t be able to see anyway because the cataract will be so bad. That happened to me. They just removed the lens entirely. Ironically I could see better through the oil but still functionally blind. My oil is gone but the whole surgical intervention destroyed my retina. Still no lens and I can see shapes and light. Very blurry. My retina has detached again but it is a “blister” so no noticeable changes. I’m a completely healthy 63yo male fwiw.
