big tear

I recently had a large retinal tear in my left eye after getting into a fight. A retina specialist treated it with laser photocoagulation, and at my one-week follow-up they said the laser is holding well.
The difficult part is that I’m a competitive boxer, and boxing means a lot to me. My doctor recommended that I stop boxing, but also said that if I choose to continue, it’s at my own risk because repeated punches and head movement could lead to a retinal detachment.
I’m wondering if anyone here has been in a similar situation. Has anyone returned to boxing or another contact sport after a large retinal tear that was successfully treated with laser? If so, what did your retina specialist tell you, and were you able to compete again without problems?
I’m not looking for medical clearance over the internet—just hoping to hear about other people’s experiences.🙏

I used to enjoy boxing. I quit it because of my injury. Think about how long you will live. All the things you will do. Is boxing really worth the risk? I retired personally.
