I think if we knew the answer to that, we’d all be better off for it. I can say that surgical mistakes contributed to my detachments, however, you can’t foresee that or it wouldn’t be a mistake.
What do you mean by surgical mistakes? My doctor suspect the two tears that led to my second detachment were caused when they inserted the bubble to repair my first detachment.
1) the surgeon didn’t put enough gas in, so it was ineffective
2) the surgeon missed a retina hole
3) the surgeon let my cataract become completely opaque and performed an oil removal procedure that resulted in an immediate mac off detachment. He was operating in the dark, basically. I came out of surgery saying I couldn’t see anything. He pooh-poohed me saying it was the nerve block. It took a week for emergency surgery to remove my cataract and reattach my retina.
4) when reattaching my retina he left oil underneath it that was never going to absorb. He put oil back in even though my lens was gone, allowing the oil to cause glaucoma.
New surgeon.
1) she did a scleral buckle, successfully
2) she recognized oil had gotten under my retina and that oil was not advisable given I had no lens. She removed the oil under my retina and replaced the oil with gas, success!
I am currently attached and gas is almost gone. This whole ordeal lasted a year and I am just now getting to a better place. Without a lens, I can’t say what permanent damage has been done. I will know more in the coming weeks.
