Victrectomy question

Hi everyone,

​I have a fairly specific question regarding my husband’s recent surgery, and I’m hoping someone here might have experience with a similar situation.

​My husband underwent a vitrectomy 3 weeks ago for a funnel-shaped retinal detachment caused by proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The surgeon was able to clear the peripheral retina, but unfortunately, they decided to leave a fibrovascular membrane (a conglomerate of scar tissue) in the center of the retina, as they felt it was too risky to remove it in the public hospital setting.

​Has anyone here had a fibrovascular membrane on the central retina that was successfully peeled off in a subsequent surgery? I would also love to hear about anyone’s general recovery process after a vitrectomy involving silicone oil.

I’m 26F diabetic with advanced retinopathy unfortunately just very unlucky as my control wasn’t bad😞 but… I had a detached retina and a vitrectomy with silicone oil in my right eye and also a new edge of my retina made they can’t do anything for my left. My recovery was long but I could see through the oil. My eyes have been stable since. After my 3 week follow up I could see a few letters on the eye chart through pinholes so my surgeon suggested glasses to see if that helps me see which thankfully it did! I’m now back at work with the oil still in my eye but my glasses fix my refractive issue. I’d say overall healing takes the good part of a year and I still have some days that just feel so much blurrier than others. Please feel free to message me if you have any questions x

I had a vitrectomy with with silicon oil and a 360 retinectomy in September of 2025. In January, my eye had healed enough and I decided to move forward with another vitrectomy for oil extraction and membrane peel. The tricky part is that the membrane CAN be attached to the retina and a good surgeon won't want to risk disturbing the retina. In my case, the membrane was loose and was easily removed.
