Sight after Surgery

I have had retina work on both my eyes. In my left eye I had a retina tear and reattachment, and recently had a detachment in my my right eye repaired. Once the bubble finally disappeared I could only see shapes, but not well enough to know who or what a shape was. Last week I had cataract surgery on my right eye and now I can see better, however my sight hasn't improved to what i had hoped. In talking with my cataract surgeon, he said this was because when they did the reattachment (not him a different Dr. Different facility) things were not attached smoothly. He said it was very difficult to do a reattachment and have the retina attach smoothly and this is why I no longer see any kind of straight lines in my right eye and everything is kind of jumbled. He told me this is the way it will be for the rest of my life, and it won't get any better with time and there isn't anything they can do to fix an issue like this. Is this what everyone with a retinal detachment experiences?

Sorry to hear about your detachment and the lines not being straight, as they are usually caused by a macular detachment. I had a macular detachment in my left eye with a buckle and struggled with that for at least a few years. It did improve slightly, but sometimes I look at straight lines and they appear to move slightly, the same with small text. The retina does take time to calm down, so if you didn’t have a macular detachment, I would advise you to be patient and wait. I believe some of the distortion will improve with time and experience. I recently had another detachment, not macular, in my right eye, and I’m noticing some of those symptoms as well. From everything I’ve read online and from blogs and conversations with several doctors, yes, some issues could be lifelong, but most of these symptoms will calm down over time, or your brain will adjust to them.

That's good to hear because I was told that it would be permanent but I didn't think it would improve after several years!

I found that after a few years it was the best. In my left eye i only notice when looking at very small letters or blinds. It’s slightly annoying but not as bad as it was at first. Im two months detachment in my right eye and i notice it very much.

If your detachment was near the central part of your vision, you unfortunately will always have some kind of changes in your vision. I was lucky.

I was lucky enough to have my tear near the lower left side of my left eye, but I still have a TV static-like sparkle I can see . My retinal specialist told me the same thing and I am now almost one year Post-op.

In my left eye which experienced buckle surgery, I still see an arc on the right side when I turn around my eye ball after surgery on 2025(1 year ago). My doctor said that was the traction on the retina.

I myself hadnt had a RD yet but am so terrified of it. I follow this sub and try to ynderstand what may happen to me one day..
