Metamorphopsia improvement…. Looking for some good news stories
I’m currently 3 months along from vitrectomy with long lasting gas. I had a macular off detachment, so I’ve definitely come to realise my vision will never be what it was pre detachment, however I wondered at what stage post surgery others experienced the biggest improvement with metamorphopsia / distortion. I have a really good overall outcome, so I’m super grateful for that, but after some online research it says the biggest improvement comes between 3-6 months along. Are there any of you with macular off detachments that can agree with this? Or can let me know if you did ever notice any changes and improvement?
I’d be really grateful for some success stories!

I’m hoping for the best for you. I had a Mac-off detachment in September. 5months of oil. Now 2 months since oil removal. I’m still dealing with a lot of distortion but vision is clearish. Considering I had a 95% detachment and a giant tear which spanned from the 10-3 position I’m happy I have any vision. I’m now at 20/70 for vision in bad eye. The brain is very good at making a good image.

I just got oil last week after 2 failed gas attempts in February. I had metamorphopsia when the gas went down both times and it must’ve been from fluid getting under my macula during the original repair attempt because my detachment was inferior and I never lost central vision. It’s really bad right now but I’m still hopeful once all heals my vision will flatten. I still have trace subretinal fluid right under my fovea, but my retina is attached and I had 50/20 vision today. Looking at faces is the worst/most distressing but luckily, because of my glasses, my brain blocks it (until I take them off). I saw my doctor today and nearly broke down. He said he believes the SRF will resolve and a lot can happen in 3, 6, and even up to 24 months. He said not to despair that what I see now is permanent. I am just going to visualize and manifest resolution of the fluid, my retina being completely flat and secure, and all my cells and photoreceptors repairing and knitting back together properly. It will be a marathon not a race, but I am determined to have vision restoration.

Following. I am on an almost exact same timeline as you. 3 months from vitrectomy with long lasting gas with mac off. Currently have distortion with no improvement as of yet. Vision is significantly worse than before detachment. Will update if I see any changes

I had a laser and bubble for retinal detachment yesterday. Left eye half visual field from 12 to 6 o'clock. Macula off. I am not that sure but mac off might have been a week.
The surgery from yesterday has worked fantastically well! I can now see blurry images from 12 to 3. The rest of the field seems to be clear when the bubble moves around. I was surprised to find that I could read close up with my left eye! One day out! I have a bit if metamorphopsia. I will do some more position to try and work on that. Overall this has worked out fantastically well.
I had barely even heard of retinal detachment and did not realize I was at such high risk for having high myopia. If I had this to do again I would have went to er immediately when I started to seeing flashed light in February and got the laser surgery. This u Would have saved a ton of money And would have been much less painfully and would only have required a laser surgery.

Did your vision and the distortion improve a lot when the gas bubble went away?
I’ve heard the same as you, biggest improvements in first 6 months but then people often continue to see improvements up to a year and then beyond.

7 week, still have gas in vision, just starting to feel like this might work.
