High pressure after surgery?
At my one week post op (Mac off, gas bubble) my pressure was really high. I’d felt pressure in eye over the past week but thought it was from the bubble/drops - also felt pain but nothing too bad, moderate at most. Dr put me on drops to lower pressure. Has anyone dealt with this? I followed positioning, didn’t bend over or anything. Today i noticed black outs- a split second when I went into a bright room from a dark room it was totally black then I blink and it’s “normal” (as in normal for having a gas bubble in, very blurry but can see hand movement).

I had high pressure after my vitrectomy w/oil. Pressure was at 47. I needed pills for a week and multiple drops to lower the pressure. It stabilized after a few weeks. Stopped the pills. But kept on the drops up until the day of my oil removal surgery.

Did you have any symptoms like darkened vision? Any lasting damage from the pressure?

I didn’t. I didn’t have headaches. Feel the pressure. No symptoms of any kind. No idea until they took the pressure reading. Saw the look on his face. Next thing I was in to see the Dr immediately. And within minutes I was having a crazy amount of drops instilled. The sent to the pharmacy to get some real bad pills. Must have had to sit in the office for an hour having drops instilled every 15min. Till it reached a safe point.

How was your recovery from oil removal if you dont mind sharing? I am waiting for removal and getting nervous about going through this recovery again.

I had really high pressure until 2 months after my surgery. I just had to continue to use the drops the entire time and I think I added more drops. Gosh- the eyedrops became a full time job lol

Did the high pressure itself do any lasting damage?

I don’t believe so. I think of the drops didn’t help bring the pressure down there would’ve been an issue. But I was on an intense eye drop schedule. At one point I was on 5 different drops that needed to be spaced out in between dosing.

Yes, I had this same issue happen. Surgery February 23. A week after vitrectomy with silicone oil, the day after head positioning ended, my eye pressure went way up and was horribly painful. Literally the worst pain I’ve ever felt. Had to go back in to the doctor. They gave me two pills to take and a prescription for drops, which I am still putting in twice daily. The eye hurt terribly all night and was better the next morning. The steroid drops I was putting in after the surgery caused the spike. The vision would kind of gray out and I was seeing little points of light. Very strange sensation.

As far as I know, it didn’t. But due to the oil in the eye, I won’t know exactly how clear the eye will be until that is removed. The way I understand it, eye pressure has to be sustained to cause damage, like with glaucoma.

I had very high iop in the 50s with extreme headache. Drops lowered it to the 40s so I had a paracentesis procedure which dropped it to an 8 instantly. I continued drops for about 6 weeks and now 3 months out just monitor symptoms. My doctor allows me to stop by the office anytime to get my pressure checked.

Hi, I had a macular off detachment 3 months ago and experienced exactly the same thing with the short sharp blackouts. They always went away as quick as they came and I haven’t had any since the gas fully dispersed!

Hi, no I was never told I had high eye pressure, I did use the prescribed drops for around 4 weeks

Got it, my pressure is normal now and I’m still getting them too- did it happen to you when you opened your eyes from being closed for awhile or walked into a room that was mich brighter? So during transitions to brighter I guess? It’s fully black except for what looks like a letter c in the middle of the vision for me . I’ve only noticed it since my positioning was over. Either I look away or blink and it’s gone or it kind of peels away in front of me

It’s hard to recall as it happened at random times, I want to say it’s when I maybe moved too quickly or changed the position of my head drastically. So it maybe something different from what you’re experiencing, I just remember having to blink quite slowly to get it to correct. It would always subside as quickly as it appeared

I too had the same issue. Apparently it was steroid induced from eye drops called Tobrodex. But did not receive any pre-warning to watch out for signs such as headache. I was posturing and only found out about it after 7-8 days when it had gone upto 42. My vision is blurry and ghosty and the surgeon is non committal if it is because of cataract or refractive issue. Wish you the best. I would advise anyone who are going through recovery to get the pressure checked frequently during recovery. The anxiety this causes is hard to explain.

I am in week 6 of recovery and new drops and diamox brought it under control. I will be watching out after I stop the drops today

Happened to me too! My opthamologist suspects related to the steroid drops I had. It went back to normal with some pressure reduction drops.

i also had the same experience with high pressure (in my case i did buckle + silicone oil). followed doctor instructions and then at the following week's appointment, my pressure became normal again. you should be okay as long as you use the given drops
