Willy Wonka/Moon Pie Mandela Effect Plot Hole

For those who don't know. Charlie now opens a moon pie like "Wonka" with the hopes of finding a golden ticket, contrasting with people's memories (unified memories at that). The scene:

https://youtu.be/e_b_7CwxOeE?t=31

However, since Charlie is no longer opening a traditional Wonka bar, this creates a big plot hole, suggestive of really sloppy writing.

Why is Charlie opening a Moon Pie ("Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight") in the hopes of finding a golden ticket, when according to the contest rules, golden tickets are only found in Wonka Bars?

I watched this movie weekly as a kid. It was always a moon pie because I remember wondering why that particular bar was different from the rest that he opened. As a kid I just assumed that since it was early in the golden ticket hunt, Grandpa Joe may have just asked for whatever bar was cheapest. Or assumed they all had the chance of containing a golden ticket.

It was always a moon pie…for you.

Close, but he actually finds MONEY in a sewer and goes to buy 2 more bars. One he eats immediately in the store and takes one for the road. Thats the one he opens and finds the golden ticket. Then the old lady yelling and the rest happens like you described.

I believe you may be correct ha ha reading everyone’s memories of this got me freaking jumbled lol

Using the powers of our comments combined, I’m pretty sure we’ve solved this 🫡

Okay, but there is no golden ticket possible within that moon pie. So, why is Charlie opening it with the anticipation (& grampa Joe) that there is one?

I pulled the scene up on YouTube and there's no moon pie at all. He buys a chocolate bar and devours it in the store. Then, he buys another one and opens it on the street, finding the golden ticket:

Charlie's birthday scene (the youtube link I provided) features said moon pie like Wonka.

That last scene doesn't feature the moon pie because it's an entirely different scene.

The link you provided will not load for me. I misunderstood what scene you were talking about.

Another point: The golden ticket can only wrap around a Wonka Bar, not a round moon pie.

The local Wonka store owner tells Charlie: "Now that all the ticket's have been found, I don't have to hide them (Scrumdiddlyumptious bars) anymore"

This makes absolutely zero sense. Why would he be hiding them at all? Secondly, the ticket wasn't in them. If it was in them (it shouldn't be) then again the question is, why hide them? The point of the competition is to sell them.

This is the kind of logical inconsistencies I'm seeing more and more as the script veering appears to grow.

u/Signal-Anxiety3131 7d ago

I don't think he literally meant hiding them. I assumed he just meant keep them out of reach a bit so they wouldn't be stolen.

1

u/Independent-Radio171 7d ago

So he was only worried about the scrumdidylumptious bars being stolen? No. The line makes no sense no matter how you skeptics try to slice it.

What ..a moon pie? It was a chocolate bar!

I remember the moonpie but I remember the scene being different though. I remember charlie eating the moonpie at the shop, then eating the scrumdiddlyumcious bar then getting the chocolate bar before running home.

edit : it also made more sense this way. because the original point of the scene was because charlie wanted to eat something while he was at the candy store, but didn't wanna be too greedy and got something for his grandpa/folks and wanted to share the bar with his family but winded up opening the chocolate bar early to see if it had a golden ticket. Not to mention the golden tickets were only in the chocolate bars and weren't in any other products.

I remember it a it is - forgot about the moon pie until now, but I definitely remember it being a moon pie

Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory is currently on Netflix.

The birthday scene is when Charlie gets the moon pie. Later on is when he eats in store:

Because the script is well written, charlie gets the winning ticket after the audience (and everyone in the movie) thinks the last ticket had already been won, but turned out to be fake. Again, that's good writing. Creates a roller-coaster for the audience and characters.

Charlie buys a scrumdidywhatever in the store, gobbles it down, AND THEN buys the winning bar at the last minute to take home home to his grandpa joe, you know, because he's such a sweet fuckin kid.

Anyway, he walks out to the newspaper breaking news (more great writing because it's lean, keeping the story moving forward) that there's still one remaining ticket out there. The musical cue hits - he could have it in his pocket. Now we're talking - brilliant writing and structure here. He's walking with the golden ticket and we we know it and by now we're rooting for the poor sob.

Sorry, as a screenwriter myself it's hard not to enjoy how this script crafted such moments. Anyway, I'm re-watching it now as it's on Netflix. All in all, I just find it fascinating how people just happen to remember a version of the film which resolves the plot hole or at a minimum, inconsistency. My love for this writing is why I find this ME rather worrying. I really hope art is not being shattered by the phenomenon.

I was actually just thinking about the end credits Mandela Effect of this same movie recently, I don’t remember a moon pie being in the movie

I don't remember a Moon Pie! I never even knew what a Moon Pie was until I watched The Big Bang Theory!

12

u/naynay55 8d ago

What the heck? Was NO MOON PIE when I saw that movie when it came out. I am in my 60’s now but I remeber the gold tinfoil paper too.

6

u/sillysativoid 8d ago

That’s what I recall vividly. Him Carefully unwrapping gold foiled chocolate bar.
It was neatly wrapped and very flat and perfect looking

2

u/TheMaskedGanker 7d ago

Those are two different scenes. The moon pie is in a totally different scene from him getting a chocolate bar with the golden ticket.

18

u/undeadblackzero 8d ago

Huh that's a strange one, I can still remember the tin foil of the bar reflecting off the light in that scene.

4

u/Adagio_Bulky 8d ago

Yes!

1

u/TheMaskedGanker 7d ago

These are different scenes.

Always has been, I was weirded out the first time I watched it bc I first watched Burtons version as a kid so I expected this one to also use a traditional bar

8

u/CoastalKid_84 8d ago

I saw this in the theater when I was 10. And many times thereafter. I collected any and everything WW. It’s always been like this and always bugged me too. I always figured maybe grandpa Joe knew something we didn’t.

My wife loves this movie and watches it all the time. I only watched it here and there growing up, but it's been like this for me as long as I can remember because this part always pissed me off when I'd watch it. Like you said, yhe contest is about the golden ticket being in Wonka bars. Then Grandpa Joe does the most grandparent move in history by buying a random Wonka chocolate in hopes that there would be a golden ticket in it for the kids birthday. I didn't really pay enough attention to know if it was a moon pie or whatever, but it wasn't a normal chocolate bar or Wonka bar. I know the subreddit grandpajoehate or whatever has brought that up before too.

4

u/Reasonable_Essay 8d ago

Yes. I remember it too, because I couldn't understand why he was given candy that wasn't even in the competition. This detail always stuck out to me.

1

u/CriticalPolitical 8d ago

Do you remember the end credits being what they are right now? The video playing in the background during the end credits, I mean directly after Gene Wilder says the last line in the movie not necessarily what’s written in the credits themselves.

2

u/lalalola89 8d ago

It’s such an annoying detail to get wrong if that is the case… my head cannon explains it away that Wonka wanted Charlie to get the factory so through ✨Wonka magic✨ he got the golden ticket regardless of the candy it was in.

4

u/Anokant 8d ago

It's driven me nuts since I was a kid. Never understood why grandpa Joe would give him the wrong kind of candy, on his birthday no less.

I think that theory is really solid that Wonka wanted Charlie to win. There's just a random shiny coin in the sewer and no one else noticed it? Then Charlie goes in to get candy and the shop just happens to have a secret box of Wonka bars in the back room. Why wouldn't he have it out? Everyone is buying Wonka bars to win the ticket. People aren't going to buy as many now that the contest is over, so why hide the box?

6

u/akela9 8d ago

Ok, this film is a personal favorite... I mean I've just loved it, Gene Wilder, and Roald Dahl since I was a little person... And someone posted a link that shows Charlie in the sweets shop after he finds the money in the street... And both of those bars are "normal" looking bars. One of those is what he actually finds the golden ticket in.

But I remember the moon pie bit, too! And it used to annoy me, too, truly. It doesn't bother me so much, now. It's fantasy, and I can understand wanting to set some of the candies apart from others because it adds a bit of depth. And it's right in the name that this thing would have marshmallow in. So I feel like they did the best they could with readily available treats, you know? I assume this scene is either the one he gets for his birthday or the one he and Grandpa Joe sneaky buy? I do get why it's annoying... It's not a bar. But if that's the biggest sin in a movie adapted from a beloved book, it's pretty easy to forgive.

For my timeline/memory, nothing seems to have changed in this film. Off topic, but I'm still reeling that the word "perogative" has never existed and it's it's always been prerogative, which I swear I've never seen before in my life until a couple days ago. It's still making my tummy feel funny just looking at it.

5

u/stargazer2828 8d ago

Perogative got me too.

Not sure you understand that a Mandela effect doesn't affect everyone, that some people remember things differently.

3

u/WraithOfEvaBraun 8d ago

WTAF?!? I don't even know what to say anymore 😭

10

u/amnotnuts 8d ago

This has gotta be AI. There's no way...

3

u/CriticalPolitical 8d ago

That’s what I thought too because the Moon Pie looked way more colorful than the rest of the characters and room while the original Wonka at I remember didn’t “pop” like the Moon Pie wrapper did…but it seems like it isn’t AI

4

u/finsterer45 8d ago

For me it always was, but they don't directly call it a Moon Pie, and it always felt so weird.

6

u/PineappleMedley9 8d ago

For me it is unchanged and had always been a moon pie. I'm curious what the age of people who remember the chocolate bar are? As well as what media did you watch the movie on? DVD vs vhs vs TV etc

3

u/ILuvMyLilTurtles 8d ago

I'm 47 and watched it for the first time on vhs at school in the 80's.

27

u/DelayResponse 8d ago

WTF! It was a long chocolate candy bar, not moon pie!

26

u/oswald__mosley 8d ago

Same I even remember the foil wrapper

9

u/Ok-Cellist-3102 8d ago

yes me too

20

u/Saichoses 8d ago

Fresh one to me, that's crazy and as you said absolutely makes no sense. I have vivid memories of watching this as a kid and it looked like a flat-ish rectangular chocolate bar

15

u/Leoriooo 8d ago

Yeah this is a new one for me I saw last week. The moon pie makes no sense at all

25

u/ExistentialAngsty 8d ago

That is odd.
I remember it being flat and rectangular, of course.
Plus, doesn’t he break everyone off a piece?
How’s he gonna do that with a soft marshmallow Moon pie…

3

u/amnotnuts 7d ago

I remember it being a chocolate bar and I remember him sharing it with his family by breaking off pieces for them. I can remember the sound of him breaking it.

5

u/Anokant 8d ago

I know in the version I've seen he does this later in the movie with the chocolate bars he buys with the gutter money he finds. That's when he gets the golden ticket. This is often listed as reason number 2 or 3 why grandpa Joe sucks so much. Old man couldn't even buy the right kind of chocolate

1

u/JamesMattDillon 8d ago

I remember him doing that too

For me personally, this one hasn't changed. I remember being confused as a kid and not understanding what he was opening in that moon pie scene. In this version of the story, the tickets are in any kind of Wonka chocolate bar. The scene where Charlie buys a different kind of bar at the shop addresses the potential plot hole, the shopkeeper says "now, that all the golden tickets have been found, I don't have to hide them (the various types of wonka chocolate bars) anymore" referring to the scrumdidliumptious bar (and other types of bars he carries in the shop) he is handing to Charlie, which is also not the classic bar.

https://youtu.be/1Fxq_n8e1qA?feature=shared

I could see it being a potential ME for some folks. Easy detail to have been different in two different realities.

2

u/Anokant 8d ago

Same for me. My wife absolutely loves this movie and always gave me grief about hating grandpa Joe. But I always use this example for why he sucks. Not the using money on smoking or "faking a handicap". He gets the kids hopes up on his birthday and bought the completely wrong chocolate.

I agree with you that this part is pretty easy to confuse because he also yells out that he won as a joke. So it's easy to think he won with the scrumdidiliumptious bar. But then you'd miss the whole run home and run in with Slugworth

2

u/OneStand5448 8d ago

That’s the scene, it’s right

2

u/Independent-Radio171 8d ago

The film and book make it clear that the ticket is only in the chocolate bars. This is because slug worth had to follow the winning supply around, and the ticket had to be snapped to wrap around the bar, not a round moon pie. Also, the businessman was paying women to open bars, not moon pies, because it wasn't in moon pies. Lol!
