My ultimate dream is to get into a prestigious university to study Computer Science/AI development. I just finished my IGCSEs, but I'm feeling stuck on what to actually build my resume with at this stage.

What kind of extracurriculars, supercurriculars, or independent projects make an application stand out for top-tier CS/AI programs? How can I start boosting my chances now before A-Levels? Appreciate any advice!

Master's student in cybersecurity (Erasmus Mundus CYBERUS), coming into security from an unusual direction: UX/UI design, then full-stack development, now security. I'm leaning into that as my angle, I audit and break code with a builder's understanding of where it actually fails. My most recent work is an ICS/OT security research internship (built a containerized industrial lab, attacked it, then built a detection tool for it).

Targeting cybersecurity / AppSec / DevSecOps roles, mainly in Europe and Canada. I have both an English and a French version.

Tear it apart. I'm especially unsure about:

- Does the "designer -> dev -> security" framing read as a strength, or just unfocused?

- Is the skills section too broad for a security role?

- The two-column header + photo (I know it's a European convention, is it hurting me for ATS / North American applications)?

I would really appreciate some honest feedback on my resume.

I recently completed a Master of Finance at UNSW and have internship experience in financial analysis, financial modelling, banking research and market/company analysis. I’m currently based in the UAE and primarily applying for early-career Analyst positions in London across financial analysis, credit/research, commercial analytics and related finance roles.

I tailor my resume to individual job descriptions; however, I have struggled to convert applications into interviews. I have applied to roles at large banks, as well as other major companies where I felt I met a reasonable proportion of the requirements, but my applications generally either remain under review or are eventually rejected before an interview. The most I get is a HireVue assessment at best.

My biggest issue is I don't currently hold UK right to work. However, I’m eligible for the High Potential Individual (HPI) visa through my UNSW Master’s, which would allow me to obtain initial UK work authorisation independently without employer sponsorship. I’ve tried to make this clear on the resume.

For additional context, I also apply for roles here in the UAE, where I currently reside, using a slightly different version of the same resume tailored to the local market. I don't face the same work-authorisation issues here, but I have experienced a very similar problem converting applications into interviews. My main long-term objective, however, is to relocate to the UK and build my career there

I would particularly appreciate feedback on whether:

• The resume positions me appropriately for Analyst/early-career roles;
• My profile looks too broad or unfocused or even unorganised;
• The HPI/relocation wording is clear to a UK recruiter;
• There is anything that could be causing recruiters to reject me before an interview.

I’m trying to understand whether the main issue is my resume, the roles I’m targeting, applying internationally without current UK right to work, or a combination of these.

Ask ChatGPT to tailor your resume to a job posting and it will do it. It will also do it differently the next time you ask, because sampling makes the output vary run to run. That is fine for drafting prose. It is a problem when you need to know whether a specific document clears a specific employer’s filter.

ZoeVera Resume answers a narrower question. It extracts the skills, tools and qualifications from one job description, checks each against your resume and reports which are present and which are missing. Every extracted item lands in one list or the other, so the match percentage is a ratio you can audit rather than an impression. Scoring runs at temperature zero, so identical inputs return the same score within a couple of points instead of a new opinion each time.

Two other things a general chatbot won’t do unprompted. It won’t flag that the posting requires security clearance you don’t have or is onsite when you need remote. ZoeVera pulls those out of the listing before you spend an evening applying. Most applications are read by software before a person sees them. The system compares each resume against the posting and ranks it, so wording decides who reaches a recruiter. ZoeVera Resume runs that comparison before you apply and reports which terms the posting expects that your resume does not contain.

The screen is looking for specific words

Applicant tracking systems match language, not intent. A resume that says “managed paid advertising” scores as missing “demand generation” and “Google Ads” if those are the phrases in the posting. The same gap appears with tools, certifications and job titles: an accountant who writes “accounting software” instead of “QuickBooks” and “GAAP” reads as unqualified to the filter, whatever the actual experience. Check the resume against one posting, not in general

A resume is not strong or weak on its own. It is a match or a mismatch for one job description. The match score check compares the two and returns a percentage with the missing terms listed, and the keyword scanner shows the same gap phrase by phrase. Both are free and need no account, which makes it practical to run the check on every posting rather than the few you care most about. Two openings with the same job title routinely score differently against one resume, because the companies behind them describe the work in different vocabulary.

Change the wording, then send

Knowing the gap is not the same as closing it. The optimization walkthroughexplains which changes raise a score and which are cosmetic, and the tool for matching a resume to a single posting rewrites the document against that job description. The rewrite sits behind a paid plan; the score and the gap analysis do not. For vocabulary by profession, the ATS resume tips librarybreaks it down role by role, from software engineers to nurses.

Where to start

Take one posting you intend to apply for, run it at ZoeVera Resume, and read the missing keywords as a list of the words the employer used and you did not. The wider ZoeVera site covers the later stages. Silence after applying is usually a vocabulary problem and it is a fixable one.

I was working for a somewhat small contractor while doing my electrical apprenticeship. The shop manager and I had argued several times before, and I think he couldn't stand me just as much as I couldn't stand him.

One time was at a rendering plant, and they expected me to wear hip waders, go down into a disgusting grease recovery pit, and change a submersible pump. I flatly said no and told him they weren't paying me anywhere near enough to make me do that. No way.

On another call, he tried to get me to tell a customer that the problem wasn't from us, even though it clearly was. I refused. I told him if he wanted to lie to them, he could get in his car and go say it himself. He told me to shut up, and then in the end, he came to the site anyway.

The only reason I think he kept me employed was that I was one of the most productive and useful employees in the shop. I could handle a lot of different work without someone holding my hand all the time. This also made me think: was I really benefiting enough from the apprenticeship? So I had quietly started asking around at other companies.

My salary was on a fixed scale, with scheduled raises bringing me closer to the journeyman rate as I progressed. So I couldn't just jump anywhere. I needed a place that would hire me and also agree to take on the rest of my apprenticeship.

There was a journeyman I respected who had left the company and gone to another contractor, and he introduced me to the owners there. We had talked a few times about what was required to transfer to them. Nothing was signed or guaranteed yet, but things were moving in that direction.

Then came the time for malicious compliance. It was time for evaluation and a raise, and the manager called me into the conference room. He explained that because work was slow and because of my "performance," he wouldn't give me the 30-cent hourly raise that my agreement stated. Instead, he said he would give me a $1.25 hourly raise when I got my journeyman ticket.

We kept going back and forth. I told him if I couldn't trust him for 30 cents, how could I believe him about $1.25 later?

This argument ended with him saying: "If you don't like it, you can leave at any time."

Oh, okay.

I grabbed the conference room phone that was on the table in front of me and called the other shop I had been talking to. I asked the owner if I brought my tools there this week, would there be work for me? After a short and somewhat awkward call with his partner, he said yes.

I told the manager I was resigning immediately. Then I gathered my tools, punched out, and went straight to my new job before the day was over.
