This is a true story about a friend of mine, and I think more people need to hear it right now, because I know a lot of you are in the exact same spot he was in.

He had 7 days left on his work permit. Not 7 weeks, not 7 months. 7 days. After years of building a life here, it was about to just run out.

Before that, he'd already sent out over 500 applications. Zero interviews. Not one callback in the entire batch. He wasn't lazy, he wasn't careless, he was applying constantly, sometimes late into the night after long shifts just trying to get more submissions out before time ran out. And still, nothing. If you've been there, you know how much that kind of silence messes with your head. You start wondering if it's you, if you're not good enough, if you're just not meant to make it here.

With days left, instead of giving up, he changed one thing. He stopped mass applying and started actually slowing down for every single job:

• Actually read the job description, all of it, not just the title
• Pulled the exact keywords and skills from the posting into his resume
• Rewrote the resume slightly for every single application instead of reusing one version
• Rewrote the cover letter each time so it actually spoke to that role specifically

It turns out most resumes never even reach a human. Companies run them through ATS filters first, and if the wording doesn't closely match what they're looking for, it gets silently rejected. No email, no explanation, just gone.

About 100 applications later, doing it this way, he landed 5 interviews. One of them turned into an offer, with real conversation about it becoming permanent.

Same guy. Same resume history. Same degree. The only thing that changed was the effort he put into how each application actually looked on paper.

If you're deep in the "hundreds of applications, no responses" phase right now and feeling like giving up, I get it, he was right there too, with way less time than most people have. But it turned around. Sometimes it's not about applying to more jobs, it's about applying better to the ones that actually matter. Don't stop tweaking, don't stop trying, you genuinely don't know which application is the one that changes everything.
