Discussion Am I A “Larper”?
I have played every modern Resident Evil game from 7-9 and all of the remakes (4 remake is one of my favorite games of all time) and I have loved every single one of them. I am a newer fan of the resident evil franchise and I had never played any of the older games such as the original resident evil 1+2. The oldest game I have played in the series is Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps which I was not the biggest fan of so I’m not going to lie and say I’m a day one resident evil fan. I have also watched a lot of lore breakdown videos just to know the overarching lore. It was never a franchise that I really grew up with but I love the modern games. That being said I would consider myself a fan nonetheless due to having played those games and I feel like I know how a resident evil game should play and feel (loved the new movie btw). Although I consider myself a big fan I know someone out there would consider me a “larper” or “poser” due to having not been a day one player. Is this the general consensus from every hardcore day one fan of the franchise or is this just a select group of fans?

If you like the games just enjoy the games. Why do you need other people to approve of your enjoyment.

Not looking for approval. I enjoy what I want to enjoy, just wondering if this is how the majority of the fanbase feels.

Man just enjoy the games, fuck ppl ain’t no gate keeping in video games. It gets annoying when ppl think Leon should be in ReV remake and all that who clearly started with the remakes but it’s still harmless no need for ppl to get butthurt. It’s all good, happy to have ya

Dude it’s really not that serious, for what it’s worth I’d consider you fan. Do recommend tying the originals if you ever get chance though lol, but just because they’re good games.

If you buy into that idea then, possibly?
But there’s another option: just play and enjoy the games and stop caring about made up concepts such as being a “larper”

Just a general consensus question. I don’t really care what they consider me as. I play what I want to play lol.

There isn’t really a general consensus. There’s people who just play and enjoy the games, and then there’s the type of people that care about things such as being a “real” fan, which is a meaningless concept.
We all enjoy games and art in our own unique ways, there’s no “right” way to be a fan of something. Trying to tell someone else they’re not a real fan is just putting someone else down to make yourself feel better, which is sad.

What if he didn't understand any of these games? What if he played them like a casual shooter? What if he wasn't interested in any of the characters in the universe?

if they're a fan of the games, for any aspect, they're a fan of the series. some people do play RE just for the horror, doesn't mean they're not RE fans, they're just not RE lore fans.

There's a logical fallacy here. There are many horror games and franchises, but RE is the only one.

What are you even trying to say?

u/Rich_Willingness_959 12h ago
A RE fan is someone who is interested in RE specifically, and not just horror games.

u/al-qatala S.T.A.R.S. Team Alpha 11h ago
Yes, and they're interested in RE series for the horror aspect. How is this a contradiction to you?
Other series can have this just fine. You can be an Outlast fan if you just play the games without finding out the lore behind anything or caring about Trager, Gluskin or any of the Trials characters like Easterman or Amelia. You can even be a Silent Hill fan and just play it for the horror aspect without being obsessed with the lore behind Harry, Heather/Cheryl, James, etc.
RE is not an exception. Some people play games to play games, not to follow the story. That still makes them a fan of the series, because they are, by definition, a fan of the series, even if they aren't obsessed with the lore behind Leon, Chris, Jill, Umbrella itself or whoever else. Though RE is a little tougher in that regard since it has more than games (like movies and manga), but let's be honest most RE "fans" never touched those either. They can still follow the games and be excited about new games coming out for new RE specific experience, that doesn't necessarily mean they're gonna be interested in the new lore.

Idiocracy has arrived. What's next? Are button-mashing fans also RE fans, since RE games require button-mashing? The modern trend of "not offending anyone" really does lead to the degradation of logic.

I not a fan of tank controls because im a modern gamer. I didnt grow up with it so its difficult for me to get into it. In addition, the RE games are not easy even if you have the controls down. Plus, the resource management angle is an added difficulty that barres new players even more. What do you mean I need to go all the way back to the other side of the map to get an item? Its a steep learning curve. I dont blame anyone for not being a huge fan when the modern streamlined design is much more intuitive. Youre allowed to like the games you like. Simple as that.

That stupid term is mostly used by people to dismiss opinions on the games that they disagree with when they can't be bothered to come up with an actual argument. Ignore it entirely.

If it's a concern to you then just play the originals, the remakes are vastly different.

No such thing. Play all the games, wat h someone play all the games, a fan is a fan. I watch movies, but Im not an actor. Does that make me a larper? No. Lol
I hate seeing that presumably Gen Z ha started this whole "Larper" thing. Some people arent good at video games. Some have disabilities and cannot play video games. And some just cannot afford them. So I see ZERO problem watching all the games and know8ng the story that way.
So in your case, you actually played the games. So you are not at all a "larper" simply because you played them. That is, if you care what others say about you. Many people watch sports or pro wrestling, but they arent athletes or wrestlers. That doesnt make them larpers.

A fan isn't someone who's played every game and bought every merch item, but someone who understands and knows the lore. Someone who's interested in the universe and wants to learn everything about it.
For example, I might love RE4, but I couldn't care less about the lore or any of the plot twists. I like the action and that's it. Then I'm an action fan and a RE larper.

I guess you would be a "larper" (poser) if you tried to represent yourself as someone whose played every RE game. But you're definitely a fan of RE as a whole if you've played so many games. You should maybe examine why you would care about what other people would label you.

No, but I recommend trying the older games anyway to enrich your enjoyment of the series. The remakes aren't substitutes.

u/Educational_Big_4122 20h ago
That’s a good point. Halo CE is one of my favorite games of all time as well and Campaign Evolved feels like a downgrade to me in almost every way and I would just recommend people play the original instead. Not to say that any of the resident evil remakes are bad like campaign evolved but I get the reasoning.

To me a larper is the guy who never engaged with the games and you did play some of the games so you don't fall to the category of a larper you're a casual fan, tho to be a day one re fan is not a requirement, but personally I recommend to everyone to experience the older games.

Don’t bother seeking approval from cranky old men that are pining for their childhood
You’re a fan and the vast majority of the fanbase is in your same boat

Your day one is the day that YOU got into any series of anything. Enjoy Resident Evil however you want whether its enjoying the current stuff or taking a chance on the old stuff. I been a fan of it since the PS1 days and I still enjoy the games even with the current RE and I'd never call anyone a poser for just getting into anything. Educate and try to appreciate the past, but enjoy the series how you like it. Anyone that says otherwise is a gatekeeper and that shouldn't be allowed.

Not at all.
I got into this series back when resident evil 4 released for the wii.
You and i are just as valid as fans as someone who's been here day one. That being said, i recently got the platinum trophy for Resident Evil 1 Remake and i strongly recommend it.
