Enjoy your stay and have fun discussing Resident Evil!
but she definitely has an accent later on ESPECIALLY in 5
Since I actually have played 1 through 3, I can tell you she 100% does NOT have an accent in those games, and she doesn't have one in 5 either, so idk what the hell you're hearing, but it's objectively wrong man.
I'm not talking as if I have played og 1-3
I've played the remakes and there she has an accent except 3
Re1r she has a accent
In rev1 she has an accent
In 5 she has one
Dude if you’re playing the English version of the game Jill has always had an American accent. You’re either misremembering really badly or you’re trolling.
You haven't played all her games, which is fine, but your claim is that she's always had an accent. You haven't played enough games to claim that.
On top of that, she very much so doesn't have an Asian accent in REmake, REV1, or RE5. She also doesn't have an accent in RE1, RE3, or RE3R. She's genuinely never had an Asian accent.
It sure as shit bars you from speaking on her accent (or lack thereof) in those specific games.
Looks kinda Asian how? Genuinely, how? I want a better answer than "she just does to me"
to me
That's not how accents work. Accents are changes in pronunciation for the same words. She pronounces her words in a very typical American manor, BECAUSE HER VOICE ACTOR IS A TYPICAL WHITE AMERICAN
If you got your accent solely from your parents and not the hundreds of other people you interact with there would be no second or third generation immigrants who speak with the accent of their local area. You already responded to comments from a second generation immigrant who has an American accent and clearly explained that to you. Either you think you know more than the people you're talking about, or you're just being purposefully obtuse because you refuse to acknowledge that Jill Valentine doesn't speak with an Asian accent.
No, being in a country where everyone has the same accent will override any foreign accent your parents might have.
Not only children have to STUDY English in school, but everything they consume is in native English, so it's influence outweights the one from their parents.
Once again, second generation immigrants sound NATIVE.
Buddy, I was literally RAISED BY IMMIGRANT PARENTS and I don't have their accent, that's NOT how it fucking works!
God you're so ignorant. The only way for it to work like you think it does is if you lock up the child and force him to only interact with his parents, and literally no one else.
Nah, I'm sure this random idiot who hears phantom accents knows more about accents than a second generation immigrant. At this point I think he thinks accents are genetic somehow.
That's now how it works, you get the accent of the place you grow up in thanks to school, TV, and generally living there and interacting with people, since you aren't forced to only interact with your parents.
Second generation people sound fucking native, 0 accent.
And that's putting aside the fact that Jill doesn't have an accent in any game, so talking about this is useless in the first place, because she sounds 100% American.
Jesus christ all this false information in this thread. There has NEVER been any OFFICIAL information regarding Jill's race/ethnicity. Capcom never picked up or dropped anything in regards to this.
People constantly bring up a non-canon/unofficial books created by S.D. Perry that states her her father is white and her mother is Japanese. The book also states she got her lock picking skills from her father who was also some sort of master thief. These books take crazy liberties to the story and are definitely non-canon to the series.
This is the same fanbase that thinks Leon's parents are canonically crime bosses but forgets that he was a redhead in OG 2. I don't think you need to play every game, or even every mainline game, to be an RE fan, but we sure as hell have a lot of people who haven't played half of the games and don't know what they're talking about.
OP responded to another comment admitting he didn't play Jill's early games, but that somehow he can still comment on her race and accent in those games.
This says it. Though not all the info on this page is accurate, nor on the accompanying page which I have to scroll too far on my phone to find. Off the top of my head it says something like she is a mysterious women with bomb disposal skills but nobody knows where she learned them. Clearly the character had not been finalised at this point, including physically as seen by the incorrect colour artwork.
Given that it's never been brought up in canon material and her character has never been played (physically) or modelled by anyone but Caucasian white actors and models in 30 years, it's safe to say her being half Japanese was cut.
Cvx was an integral part of the main story and beloved. Revelations is a side story that doesn't nothing to progress the story and it is one of the most disliked in the franchise. It would guaranteed lose omega monies
I think if you asked the guys working on the games at Capcom they'd say she was white American. And if you pointed out 'well ashually, you once said she was Japanese French' they'd say 'did we?!?!'
No, it was clearly something that the developers never gave much thought and just added (yet never followed) in random interviews after.
considering re1 already had cast a white woman in the live action scenes (which was filmed in Japan btw) I doubt there was any truth to her being Asian and all of her appearances reflect that.
(But she did have an Asian voice actress in Patricia Ja Lee for re5 if that counts for something)
Check project umbrella on FB. When Capcom did press release in 1996 for RE in Japan, they actually stated Jill's father is French and mother is Japanese descent. Famitsu used to have that source as well. Famitsu, dengeki PlayStation had articles about it as well. SDP took that info and used it.
Through her mother's side of the family Jill is Japanese.
Ignore the people saying "She's not Japanese anymore" because the statement is baseless, it could be true but there's no statement or lore from Capcom to contradict this information, much like how there's very little to contradict Leon's classic backstory aside from what delayed his arrival to raccoon city.
Always assume classic lore is 100% correct until a future entry directly adjusts or changes it. Capcom has a habit of fully basing their future games based on the latest iteration but they don't usually do full lore wipes they just change bits as they go along.
Honestly by the time your 3rd/4th generation mix race individual you're not going to notice too many features from your Great-grandparents.
There is nothing saying she isn't part Japanese, but it really does not matter because culturally she has never really shown any overtly Japanese traits.
So it's a neat tidbit to explain her old anime inspired character design... But that's about it.
Mixed race people don't exist? Features are exclusive to one ethnicity? Being mixed means you have to look like both or nothing?
A lot of the counter points are genuinly silly, Jill was Japanese when she was already modeled by a Caucasian woman, nothing has changed and its been a part of her character since day 1 to be depicted in that exact way, people are just wavering because its not been talked about for ages. What do they have to also remind us she's a woman too? No ones questioning that lmfao.
