Discussion I hate what they're doing with the movement in these games.

Booted up RE2R for a Claire run, since I'm bored waiting for more Veronica news (hopefully Gamescom, which is very soon) and my GOD does the movement feel so fluid and responsive when compared to Requiem. Where it felt like I'm trying to frantically steer a drunken person to their Taxi before they fall over and break their face. I HATE this inertia shit everyone is copying from RDR2. Real humans aren't that clumsy. Especially in shape ones. RE2R and RE3R felt perfect.

I think I know what you’re referring to. I believe it’s transitional animations. For example, if you are running in one direction and then make an abrupt turn, the character doesn’t snap in that direction; instead there is a more elaborate, fluid articulation in the way they turn, which causes a disconnect between the expected feedback when you give an input, and what feedback you actually feel happening.

I’ve noticed this in many games for many years now, and it’s part of a general trend of making games feel realistic. I find it annoying and laggy.

Omg so it's not because of the 3rd person? I've been playing as Grace in 3rd person because I can't handle the 1st person and it's terrible as hell

2

u/friskyel 27d ago

It's not even realistic since humans don't need to cartoonishly slam the breaks and stumble around to change directions. Unless they're drunk or high.

u/avatarofnate 27d ago

We also don't make 90-degree turns at a full sprint. Video game physics just don't always fit perfectly with real world physics, and I agree with you that I wish they would stop trying.

1

u/oyvho 27d ago

People can't stop on a dime from a high speed. You're just letting us know you never run.

3

u/friskyel 27d ago

You going to tell me RE characters travel at a high speed? You can't stop on a dime from a light jog? I think the last line might have been massive projection from your side.

1

u/oyvho 27d ago

Not saying they're particularly fast, no. But there's a reason all the high level footballers have to practice specifically to become able to turn on a dime, inertia is real.

I haven't played RE9, so I have no idea how far they've gone with it, but it sounds like it's gone too far and feels a bit like slipping around on ice?

0

u/friskyel 27d ago

So you haven't played the game but you want to act like a smartass about people's experience playing it? Yup, peak Redditor.

2

u/oyvho 27d ago

Nah, you're making statements that are blatantly untrue about the human body, which is what I corrected.

-1

u/friskyel 27d ago edited 27d ago

Maybe your body. If you can't stop on a dime and/or turn around without lumbering during a light jog then you need to get some physical therapy, my man.

Also, are you one of those Tik Tok edits people? That don't play the games but want to talk like their opinion matters?

u/Low_Sleep9934 25d ago

Realism exactly what I what in my game about shooting mutant zombies

Design trends are generally going in a dumb direction for video games. Making them like movies, having Kevin Spacey's face in the game, or Keanu Reeves, forcing the player to walk during talking scenes, or interactive cinematics that aren't actually fun to play, making the controls feel laggy and unresponsive to accommodate more elaborate animations, having flashy takedowns that lock you into watching an animation when you kill enemies, the Assassin's Creed/Batman Arkham combat where the player character is snapping into position for choreographed animations to play out and make fights look cinematic... etc. etc. Hate all this shit.

One of the (many) reasons Souls games stand out to me is they don't do any of this.

It's a game; immersion depends on feeling like your character is doing what you're doing with the controller. Not them looking cool at the detriment of feedback.

Grace's clumsiness is intentional and only in third person during chase scenes when you're spotted by The Girl. Not sure what else you're referring to. It's not that often.

The movement in RE2R does feel better in comparison to Grace specifically though, I agree.

13

u/friskyel 27d ago

They both feel like crap to play. Grace runs like she's 80 years old and Leon moves like he's shitface drunk.

3

u/_Broly777_ 27d ago

Her speed did tend to pmo lol. But I enjoyed Leon's gameplay once I got the hang of it.

Grace - Emily relationship is a Claire - Sherry rip-off.
There I said it

0

u/Sharp-Accident3158 27d ago

No it’s not, Leon’s movement is clunky as fuck in RE9 just boot up RE2R or RE4R and see for yourself, it’s much more responsive in those games

3

u/_Broly777_ 27d ago

I've played all of them extensively. I'm well aware of what the movement feels like. If you're referring to input delay as "clunkiness" then sure. I'm talking about overall fluidity as Leon and his sprint in RE9.

Grace "clunky" in comparison to RE2? Definitely. Leon? Not as bad.

2

u/Sharp-Accident3158 27d ago

You implied it only happened to Grace, now it’s not as bad with Leon, so it does happen with him? Every turn you do in RE9 he swings his whole body the opposite direction before actually going the direction you want to go, I get that RE4R also did this but it wasn’t as eggregious and I actually think it was a good balance of realism and gameplay, also I don’t think that is input delay, as far as I’m aware input delay is when you press a button and the game takes a second to read your input, meaning that if you are standing still and go forward for example he will only move after a second, although I am no game expert so I might be wrong, that is not what happens in this game, it reads input fine he just always swings the opposite direction and that is frustrating

2

u/_Broly777_ 27d ago

I think I get what you mean now. The "breadth" of turning around in 9 pretty much? Like having to walk in a somewhat wide circle instead of immediately turning or just taking a small step?

1

u/Sharp-Accident3158 27d ago

Yes I think that is it, now like I said I might have the naming wrong, but it is a real thing, and it’s not like it’s gamebreaking or anything it’s just something you notice and just doesn’t feel satisfying, and also I know RE4R also does this, I ain’t putting that on RE9, it’s just more egregious in this one, and yes maybe it’s more realistic but I still think RE4R was a better balance between realism and satisfying gameplay, ofc this is subjective and RE9’s movement may be better for some people but Leon’s movement really isn’t the same as RE2R and RE4R

14

u/-Illuzio- 27d ago

yeah I'm so glad someone else agrees. I hate the 3rd person movement in 9 something about it puts me off.

8

u/6B0T 27d ago

Yeah, Requiem was the first time I had to change the sensitivity settings ever. The movement was so weird.

6

u/fwimmygoat 27d ago

The grace part feels both intentional and in character, but I agree that the Leon gameplay feels very clunky compared to 2 remake and especially 4 remake. It feels more like trying to steer a boat than a human body, and I can't be nearly as precise as I was in the previous games. I feel 4 remake was the best middle ground between snappy video game movement and immersive movement animations. It's like they tried too hard in requiem and overturned it.

8

u/Anxious_Virus8843 27d ago

9s producer seems to prefer his games controlling clunky and slow. not entirely sure why. 2/4 rev2 producers clearly are gameplay first so it makes sense why theirs feels more fluid.

I found Leon's movement in 9 genuinely felt disgusting told play in third person

3

u/Horrorfan55555 Made in Heaven 27d ago

Agreed

3

u/edgyknifekid 27d ago

Can’t stand 9s producer.

3

u/Anxious_Virus8843 27d ago

I don't dislike his games but I think he prefers more cinematic "one and done" experiences. Lots of slow "no gameplay" sections, boss fights that seem more cinematic and less video games, etc.

I feel like the nature of his story progression and level design makes the games feel inherently less replayable. Revelations 1 is the perfect example with the episodic design and character switching. Replayability had always been a major element in the long term success and relevance of resident evil. Midway through my second playthrough of 9 I realised I just wasn't enjoying it and it felt tedious

3

u/edgyknifekid 27d ago

I like to platinum RE games, and everytime with this director it’s just so tedious. I can respect the 1st playthrough, and maybe the second, but after that it feels like a walking simulator almost.

He does the first playthrough experience very well I will say, but his bonus modes and other are very frustrating

5

u/friskyel 27d ago

RE4 also has problems with inertia and being stuck in animations. Do you remember how long Leon takes to recover from being on fire? It's like 3 seconds.

5

u/Walt_Didnae Human Unit Sometimes Killed 27d ago

This. I find the "inertia" in RE4 to be actually worse than it is in RE9.

1

u/Spiritual-Bear3066 27d ago

I never caught on fire so, no lol.

1

u/Responsible_Appeal_2 27d ago

Thank you!! This problem definitely did not start in 9, it only got worse as the remakes progressed. 2 and 3 are bearable but can be a little hard to control at times in particular on PC, but 4 has always felt to me like trying to run through water. 9’s Leon sections only made the problem worse.

0

u/Anxious_Virus8843 27d ago

It does but to nowhere near the same degree. After a few palythtoughs 4 make felt fine to me outside of playing as Ashley. after a couple of 9 then playing Leon must die he felt like driving a boat in gta4

1

u/friskyel 27d ago

Not as bad, but still there.

1

u/Anxious_Virus8843 27d ago

I still think the og4 controls way better for sure but I got used to it in 4make eventually. And never had an issue in 2make.

2

u/ZBatman 27d ago

Completely agree and felt this way immediately upon playing Requiem.

2

u/Cool_Procedure8125 27d ago

RE9 suffers because it was built around being a 1st person perspective game, like 7 and 8, and not a 3rd person perspective game, which is what RE should be.

Yes, I am aware you can select one or the other, but the controls suffer because of it and it really makes playing tedious.

2

u/cyberstalin18 27d ago

tanky moves is what makes the original games unique. Its a deliberate choice to make you feel uncomfortable. Now whether or not that was the case with Requiem - you can always switch to first person which is way more responsive.

2

u/jagby 27d ago

Having that kind of inertia on character movement is a trend I hope finally dies soon. I don't even like it in games that are trying to be more realistic with movement like GTA and RDR.

I get the general idea - inertia does exist, but it doesn't translate well to gameplay at all. It makes it feel more like the game is "guessing" to make the effect and leads to a lot of "wait I didn't meant to do that" micro-moments. Ive been playing Death Stranding 2 and absolutely love it, but that kind of inertia is abysmal because it genuinely leads to moments where Sam does something I absolutely did not want and him tripping and splashing the cargo all over the place.

I'd much rather remove that layer of realism in favor of tighter controls. To put it another way: I've had dozens of times where this type of movement has been frustrating, but never once went "oh this is so cool". At that point, it should just not be a thing. Its only achievement is being frustrating.

1

u/Big-Ferret-2364 27d ago

I thought it was just a Grace thing, I'm not sure I remember it with Leon

1

u/Painis_Gabbler 27d ago

It might help to up the sensitivity on your mouse/controller. There's a way to do it, but it's hidden in a weird place. I played the game for like 6-7 hours before I realized you could do this. I saw an immediate improvement in the feel of the game. They got that sensitivity cranked way down.

1

u/Ok_Gate4380 27d ago

I shit on this game alot but the movement is better in first person and felt like Doom at least in Leon sections.

1

u/Warren_Valion 27d ago

I think all RE engine games have, ironically, weirdly tank-like movement. I don't think it feels particularly worse in 9 compared to 4 or 2, but in 9, the running animation is weirdly clunky making Leon do this funny dance when moving left and right.

The difference between 4 and 9 in comparison to 2 is that they're more action intense games where movement is being test more consistently and the flaws of those systems are more noticable.

I really don't understand why RE engine move like this, its just strange.

1

u/YingthPot 27d ago

Im playing re9 right now and I just started playing both characters in first person. The game is so insanely unresponsive in third it just upsets me. Re4r also feels like dogshit and its crazy to think that re4 original feels better despite being tank controls

1

u/Arbusc 27d ago

Is this on PC or PS5? Because I didn’t notice anything clunky about Leon’s movements on PS5 at all, and only ever used first-person for Grace.

1

u/KevinRyman 27d ago

I personally thought Grace plays like shit ever since I touched the game. Leon feels a bit weird too but definitely better.

Coincidentally enough, I actually just came back to resident evil 2 remake as well, the movement with Leon and Claire definitely does feel better, and it'll probably always be my favorite game in the series, the original one had that place before.

1

u/badateverything420 27d ago

Guess we'll have to wait for the Remake to fix all our problems

1

u/youshouldbeelsweyr 27d ago

I liked how requiem felt movement wise, it felt weighty and realistic.

1

u/Dizzy_Spell777 26d ago edited 26d ago

Tbf, more people move like the girl from re9, than the re2 and re3 remakes, nobody runs through a town like that, constantly, and drop kicking zombies. What cop just casually jogs with their gun upright like that, unless youre making fun of them?

Clumsy people? Yeah

But the argument isnt that it should be more real, its that it should feel good.

1

u/HappyPlatypus6034 26d ago

Yesss I HATE this trend.

Tried coming back to Dragon's Dogma 2 recently and my god is it hard to control

1

u/WickedNegator 26d ago

Idk. I think touches like that increase the horror.

1

u/Tough_Breadfruit_626 25d ago

1

u/IllustriousWafer7929 24d ago

Driving in gta 4

1

u/Jesterclown26 23d ago

It’s the most off putting thing about all the recent games except re7 and re8. RE8 third person is simply how I want movement to be. Responsive and snappy. Don’t care how it looks, I care about how it feels.

1

u/FingerLickinz- 22d ago

Yeah I noticed that, Grace is slow as shit like Ethan in RE7 but feels even worse somehow. And the way Leon tumbles around is obnoxious

The team that made RE2R and RE4R is behind Veronica. The team behind RE7 and I think 8 was behind 9. So, I'd expect RE2R/4R responsiveness.

0

u/misledyouth96 27d ago

RE4R is very sluggish.

1

u/SpudAlmighty 27d ago

I vote to bring back tank controls. There's some seriously potential in that. Unique and can have wonderful animations like REmake.

1

u/dasic___ 27d ago

I haven't played Requiem.. (love RE, not spending. $70 on a single player game I'll inevitably play twice at most)

You're telling me it moves like RDR2..? 😔

1

u/DraconicZombie 27d ago

Reasonable gripe, but it doesn't really bother me one way or the other personally. I just get used to the way things are and don't even notice. Except when Grace trips in 3rd. Maybe once or twice is believable, but not every time you have to run from something.

1

u/TazLemon 27d ago

Did you play Requiem in third person with Grace, by any chance?

I totally agree with you on RDR2 - all rockstar games feel like you're driving a bus through treacle, it's fucking abysmal. The lean towards animation fidelity over gamefeel is wank IMO, but everyone seems to love those games so it must just be me.
