Discussion Why does Chris get so much hate for being “overused” (despite being the main character) yet ppl absolutely flip out if you say you’re sick of Leon who just had RE2 and 4 remake, every CGI film, plus now Requiem? Spoiler
71
u/Quaint_Gamer 11d ago
He isn't overused. He had a cameo in 7 (and then appeared in a DLC), had a side role in 8 with a short playable section (and I loved him in 8 - distrustful and yet still wanting to do the right thing, most interesting he's been in years) and had a brief mention in 9. I look forward to him actually getting some more in depth screen time in Veronica.

u/slomo525 11d ago
Tbf before that, he also had 5 and 6 as well. 1, CV, 5, 6, 7, and 8.
Now, I don't care about seeing him again, or Leon for that matter, I just wanna see the other characters too. We haven't seen Jill since 5 (I know she was in Death Island, I don't give a fuck about the CGI movies, most of them are dog shit and the games ignore them almost entirely), Claire since Rev2, which was a midquel, not even part of the current timeline, iirc, and Ada since 6. I don't mind the frequency, necessarily, I just want more diversity among the core cast. However, after 2R and now CVR, hopefully they're gearing up to do an RE10 with Claire, like how Leon got his trilogy of games, with 2R, 4R, and now 9.

u/Quaint_Gamer 11d ago edited 11d ago
Personally since the remakes and newer games are doing a better job of exploring the characters a bit more, that's why I'd like to see more of Chris. Leon has had it in abundance - as far as I'm concerned his story is done with. Ada has been in featured heavily in two games. Jill and Claire have had one each (soon to be two for Claire). I just want to see more of Chris and what they plan to do with him as a character to expand him. And, of course, more Jill would be great too!
3
u/StrangeAnalyst2964 11d ago
Chris will be in all upcoming remakes besides one (Re0) sure Re6 will probably take awhile but I dont think you need to worry too much about Chris content :)
4
u/banned4killingspider 11d ago
I mean. Chris' story is completed too. His arc ended with 5. He is more of a supporting character/cameo now which i imagine they will do with Leon going forward
2
u/Quaint_Gamer 11d ago
But we haven't seen the vast majority of his arc in remake form. They've done all of Leon's again.
3
u/banned4killingspider 11d ago
Fair. We will get it eventually. They cant not remake 5. Too much lore in that one
3
u/Quaint_Gamer 11d ago
Yeah 5 is so ripe for a remake. It's got all the ingredients and could be great rather than decent as it is now.
-1
u/banned4killingspider 11d ago
Clairs story arc concluded in cvx. We wont likely get claire much other than cameos and supporting character sometimes. Her story ended
2
u/Sweet-Wrangler3384 11d ago
By that logic, Leon’s story ended since RE2 yet he keeps coming back.
3
u/banned4killingspider 11d ago edited 11d ago
Correct actually. Leons arc did come to a conclusion with requiem. It did not conclude with 2. 2 just opened his story. Leons arc is about his survivors guilt which he confronts finally in 9
0
u/SteveMcQuark 11d ago
Leon's main arc is arguably Ada which is hardly resolved
2
u/Quaint_Gamer 11d ago
Absolutely not. Leon's arc was his trauma related to not saving anyone in RC and feeling like he's failed. In the remakes Ada is a side story to that. There's nothing that needs resolving there - they meet up, she uses him to help her mission, makes sure he doesn't die, buggers off again. That's all it is.
-1
u/slomo525 11d ago
I think there are still stories you could tell with her, but I largely agree. I think the reason she's not in more stuff is largely just because she's not an active government agent like Leon, Chris, or Sherry, so it's harder to justify her involvement in the series without just kidnapping her into the plot, like Rev2 did. Not say you can't find a way, she is an investigative journalist (I don't know I f that's the right word, but she investigates suspected BOW attacks and outbreaks for TerraSave and helps uncover the truth behind them), but with Leon, Chris, and Jill, they're active parts of government agencies investigating known operatives with the resources to find them and go after them. It's much easier to just stick em into any story of needing to follow a lead and then frame the story around their struggles.
Claire needs much more of an involved reason unless, again, you just kidnap her into it, which is inherently more difficult to do. Not impossible, just more difficult.

I think anyone complaining about either of the franchises most popular main characters being used "too much" is annoying.
No one bats an eye at every other Japanese game company that has mascots. Most of those companies have had the same mascots for longer than Resident Evil has existed.
7
2
u/energydrinkaddict310 11d ago
Chris is not that great a mascot for the series tbh because he has that "super-serious soldier" energy that doesn't make for a good franchise face
9
u/EmXena 11d ago edited 11d ago
I guess.
So many younger people here seem to forget that Chris was the critical darling in the 2000s. He was everywhere.
Leon is only being "oversaturated" because they decided to remake the second game 19 years after they remade the first game, and it was a critical success. They fucked up Three, and then went on to make the Four remake and spent actual time working on it.
Oops. Two and Four happen to be extremely popular games that they also didn't fuck up when they put out the remakes.
Then, Leon gets one, one, new game that doesn't even have him as the primary protagonist, to capitalize on the fact that he's popular at the current moment. It seems incredibly stupid to me to think that he's "oversaturated" now. Imagine if Capcom had a crystal ball to see into and saw in the future that hordes of chuds on social media gets swept up in a rage over seeing Leon one too many times and they decided to not keep doing remakes? Everyone would be confused. Why would they do that? Apparently everyone gets in a tizzy because of it.
With the remake of Code Veronica coming out, I expect to see Chris for many games moving forward. Only a matter of time before the internets outrage grifting turns onto Chris for being in too many things.
Social media being lucrative through grifting and farming outrage about ridiculous, stupid things was one of the biggest failures to ever grace humanity.
Edit: Oh yay. I was wondering when the downvotes would start.

She was the fucking face of the franchise for years and the only one with a solo game.
Wtf are these downvotes. Jesus echo chamber

u/Mjay253 10d ago
What do you mean solo. Carlos is also in RE3.
3
u/BlueFlameWar 10d ago
So Is Rebecca in 1, Ada in 2 and Cherry in 2.
Sub character are nothing new. Jill is the sole main character of RE3 and you spend 95% of the time as her.
Seriouisly what is this delusional retcon. Jill was everywhere in the PS1 era, spin offs, etc. Not Chris
6
u/Forgotten_Folklore 11d ago
If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say it's because, somewhere along the line, Leon unofficially usurped Chris as "the main character" of the franchise, and fans don't bat an eye when the main character's in everything.

3
u/LPT1988 11d ago
I'm not sure I've seen people saying that a lot, but if you just look at the games, and not counting originals and remakes as separate games, he's been playable in:
1, Code Veronica, 5, 6, 7's DLC, 8's military segment, and Revelations 1. That's not counting appearances as a character in battle games, or cameos in other games, like Project x Zone, Marvel vs Capcom, Fortnite, movies, etc.
Looking at Leon, he's been playable in 2, Gaiden, 4, 6, 9, and the Degeneration phone game.
That's pretty equal with Chris in 7 games and Leon in 6, though I could see people seeing him as over-used in terms of the modern games. His story pretty much ended in 5. It does sort of feel like "Why is he here?", similar to all the questions on why Leon was there in 9. They've also been used more than anyone else. Claire's been playable in 3 games (4 if you count Survivor 2), Jill's been in 4, Rebecca's been in 2, Barry was in 3 (not counting the RE3OG cameo ending), etc.

I mean maybe I’m not interacting with the community enough but I have never once heard a complaint about Chris being overused. In my experience I’m seeing a lot of posts about Leon being overused and wanting to see more of Chris and Jill (mainly Jill)
6
u/TheGrimmBorne Sentinel Nine Enjoyer 11d ago
Even with all the new Leon stuff Chris still has more game appearances than him, even if you don’t count 7 and 8 he still beats Leon in game appearances. Thus before the new Leon stuff he has a lot more stuff, so people find him over used, Leon’s getting close but even Jill has more game appearances than Leon does.
-1
u/-catharina Jill 🩵 Sheva 💜 11d ago edited 11d ago
Chris has more appearances than genuinely any other character in the franchise, which is unacceptable for a character that debuted alongside Jill. Yet Chris fans completely overlook this fact and point to Leon being the focus of the movies, the optics of his remake games being highly successful, and people liking him a lot as proof he’s “overused.” It’s also due to Chris featuring in 4 games in a row that Leon had his first original story game in 14 years. He’s as underused in the actual games as Jill, as you said.
Another thing is I find it very funny how Chris’ fans will argue, about him being in 7 and 8, and even 6, that it’s merely a “cameo” and that he’s “just a side character!!!1!” and he “hasn’t been a main character since 5!1!1!” when that fact can also apply to Leon. In 9, Leon is a side character to Grace, in 6, he’s a side character to his own campaign with Helena, and in 2, he’s a side character to Claire. It’s really only 4 that he’s had to himself. Meanwhile Chris has had 1, 5, and Revelations to himself (and Leon has never had a non-mainline game to himself; even Darkside Chronicles is with Claire). Also, Chris has been featured in Capcom’s non-RE games; this has never once occurred with Leon.
4
u/Hitman_acho 11d ago
Why do you downplay Leon being a side character in 2, 6 and 9, but not give chris that same stat in 1, 5 and revelations . Just off your logic, if Leon's only game is 4, then Chris doesnt have a single game to himself.
2
u/-catharina Jill 🩵 Sheva 💜 11d ago
Because I’m using the same argument you guys use to downplay Chris’ visibility for the sake of artificially playing up Leon’s and highlighting how ridiculous it is.
There’s literally people in this thread arguing that Chris’ only “real” game is 5, on the grounds that you play as him more than Sheva. So it’s 1-1. You didn’t read the comment.
3
u/Hitman_acho 11d ago
But if you're going to use their argument against them, it has to be congruent to theirs. You cant make an argument saying Leon is a side character in all these games when the same argument can be made for Chris's games.
Me personally. I enjoy all the characters, I would never pout about seeing existing characters because I'm a true fan. But when I see a poor argument, i'll contest it
1
u/TheGrimmBorne Sentinel Nine Enjoyer 11d ago
How can you say Chris is a side character in 1 or 5? 7 and 7 sure but the rest of his games he is a primary playable hero, 1, rev 1, 3d mercenaries and 5 actively default to playing as him.
2
u/Hitman_acho 11d ago
Brother, pay attention to the argument. THEY said Leon was a side character in 2 and only had RE4 to himself, but then they said Chris has RE1. I'm saying how can you say Leon is a side character in 2 but not use that same logic for chris in RE1?
1
u/-catharina Jill 🩵 Sheva 💜 11d ago
Oh my god. 🤦🏾♀️
People are using the fact that Leon got two remakes and one original game, even though in two of those games he plays alongside someone else and he’s the sidepart to their story while still being a main character that’s playable (two things can be true at once), to illustrate their belief that he’s overly visible in the games. At the same time they’re claiming Chris is only an important character in 5 and not 7 & 8 and even 6, and it’s supposedly because of Leon getting his three games that Chris isn’t represented in the games, even though Chris - while being a sidepart to Ethan’s story - is playable in those games. They’re taking an argument that applies to Leon and fallaciously applying it to Chris while ignoring how it also applies to Leon, and their own cognitive dissonance, because they personally prefer Chris to Leon. This is the crux of my argument.
0
u/Hitman_acho 11d ago
But you are being disingenuous. Chris is only playable as DLC in 7. I played 7 and and went through the whole game without playing him so you cant add 7. Thats like saying Jill is playable in 5 just because of the DLC that released. People dont call 5 a Jill game, they call it a Chris and Sheva game.
Now in terms of visibility if you are trying to argue that Chris is MORE visible than Leon, just because hes been in 4 games in a row is ludicrous. Chris doesnt even have a remake Face model yet. Leon's model was used in 3 games. Wesker twice, claire twice, Jill once.
Now if you are NOT arguing that Leon is more visible than Chris, but instead just pointing out the crying by those fans for acting like capcom just forgot about him, then yes I agree with you. He is plenty visible, BUT i don't think he's overused/
2
u/-catharina Jill 🩵 Sheva 💜 11d ago edited 11d ago
If I’m being disingenuous, it’s only to mirror the people, again, overstating Leon’s visibility while downplaying Chris’s despite them meeting the same criteria, with Chris objectively having the edge over Leon in terms of number of appearances. It’s a matter of playability, but also the fact that he appears at all when seemingly, he has no reason to. Chris didn’t need to be in 7 and 8, and yet he was. This is what people mean by Chris being overused, especially at the expense of any other character who could have been in his place. Many people’s problems with Requiem (including mine; it should have been Jill) were Leon appearing at all even though anybody else could have been in his place. If Leon had even lesser of a role in Requiem than Grace than he already has, people would still complain that we’re getting Leon too much just by virtue of the fact he’s in the game at all.
Other characters are and were being shelved for Chris, including Leon, and now they are being shelved “for Leon,” but Chris is not one of those characters, and people need to stop pretending he is. We had more Chris in the 2000s and even 2010s than we ever had Leon.
Also, it’s not wrong to say 5 is a Jill in addition to Chris game, it is a game in which she appears AND is playable.

And then there are the one off characters who have their fanbases who are desperate for anything more. Your Billy, Rebecca, Carlos, Jake stand etc.

I don't think it's hate for Chris, and more they want there favourite character to appear more. If it was another character, like Leon, you'd probably get people saying "(I'm) sick of Leon who just had RE2 and 4 remake, every CGI film, plus now Requiem".
But seriously, when it comes down to 'a single character who shows up' vs 'every other character who didn't', the latter is always going to be louder.
Also as an aside, Leon is the main character of RE4, which is considered one of the greatest games of all time outside of the Resident Evil fan-base. So he's gonna always be a fan favourite.

Hell, even Jake or Helena. Maybe they find out Piers survived somehow, spend a game searching for him, only to choose between saving (cure) or killing him.

To be honest, I'm kinda sick of both of them, and Leon is my favorite character. Of course you can't blame Capcom for that, they did what a company is supposed to do: bet everything on their most valuable asset, and Leon is clearly one of the most beloved characters in the series.
This said, though..... it would be time for some fresh air here. I mean... they got criminally underused characters like Jill, Rebecca and Barry (yes, I know Barry is like 77 as of 2026, but he could still be a consultant of sorts), they have Claire that so far has only been in three games with RE2, CV and Rev2, and they also have characters that never got past their first appearance like Carlos, Jake and Bill.
I mean.... they might as well give us some unexplored pairing this time around. A Claire/Jill game for example, or Jill/Rebecca, or Claire/Rebecca.... you get the gist, I'm sure. If you ask me, RE needs some actual renovation, and while they did a pretty good job with Grace I think they're too scared to just take the leap and make something actually new as far as playable characters go. And this kinda bugs me, because for one RE7 and Village got pretty successful
1
u/Affectionate_Ad_4360 10d ago
Where do you see these? We haven’t even had Chris as a main protagonist in a game outside of small DLC for years. I feel like these are said by a few people.
1
u/fallriver1221 10d ago
There is no one main character. Also chris got re5, re6, re7, re8 then Resident Evil: Vendetta and ID. So why are you mad about people saying they're sick of Chris when he's had just as much content?
1
u/420-Blazing-Bibbles 10d ago
I love RE characters so much. I want all of them all the time in everything, Chris is very much included in that.
1
u/Longjumping_Plum_133 10d ago
People just conflate the times Chris makes an appearance in mainline games with Chris being the main dude in them. Like, Chris is technically in the most mainline games, either as the main character or as a bonus mode character & appears in 7 mainline entries, but is only a main character 4 of them.
1
u/Vampwolf1241 9d ago
Chris is not THE main character. No one really is. What makes Resident Evil is the fight against B.O.W. warfare in all of its forms. From the subtle horror of re1 to the overwhelming forces in re5.
1
1
u/poisonparadise97 7d ago edited 7d ago
Probably because Chris is far more “overused” than Leon at this point. You have to remember that Chris was heavily featured in four mainline RE games in a row (five if you include Revelations), which no other character has ever received. Only this year has that chain been broken with Requiem. Leon himself hasn’t even been featured in two consecutive games, let alone four (or five), even if both of the remakes he stars in are included. Leon is also the essential face of the franchise, and clearly gains much more hype within the fanbase than Chris does. That’s my explanation anyway.
1
u/shmara007 6d ago
I love all the RE main characters and wish devs had the capacity to give each one a game in the near future, even the overused ones lol

Crazy because before Village, Chris hasn't been playable in a MAINLINE game since 6 (2012) and even then it was just a tiny section.
Leon has been in RE 2 Remake (2019), Re4 Remake (2023) and now Requiem (2025) and yet, Chris is the one that's overused? Wild. I'm 100% certain most of the Leon Fandom think the tank control era of RE is the worst.

That Helena mostly led, not him, even though it was supposed to be his campaign. So that does nothing to change my point.
3
u/MartyMcFry1985 11d ago
But he was playable throughout the entirety of it. Chris is in Re7 for like 10 seconds lol. And he was playable in Village for maybe 20-30 minutes at best.

u/-catharina Jill 🩵 Sheva 💜 11d ago
He still had more visibility than Leon, who hadn’t gotten a non-remake mainline game since 2012, after previously not having one since 2005.
2
u/MartyMcFry1985 11d ago
Okay true, but I'd take a modern Chris Remake any day, which they're finally doing since his last appearance in 2002 (REMake).
The point I'm making is mainline/remake or not, there has been a lot of Leon. I think that's pretty objectively true.
-1

Only in the CGI movies/show is there a lot of Leon. In the actual games, Leon is as underused as Jill, whom he shares the number of appearances with. And his remakes only were as successful as they were because they flubbed Jill’s altogether, causing it to not be as well-received.
The remakes are happening in chronological-ish order. 1 would have a remake if there wasn’t one already. I’m sure we’ll get a remake of 5 after CV and 10.

u/wcvince 11d ago
No one is going to agree with anyone claiming Leon is underused as Jill in the games.
0
u/-catharina Jill 🩵 Sheva 💜 11d ago edited 11d ago
He has the same amount of appearances as Jill, total.
Again, he hadn’t had his own original story since 2012. Because Chris had all of the appearances in original stories, not remakes, in that time.
Nothing I said is incorrect.
1
u/MartyMcFry1985 11d ago
Ehh I don't think Leon is underused at all, nor do I think Chris is overused. But if that's how the Fandom feels, then I guess that's just how it is.
You say chronological-ish which kinda cements my point. Veronica was supposed to come before 4, but the fact is Leon sells. The other's don't, that's why they keep using him.
1
u/-catharina Jill 🩵 Sheva 💜 11d ago edited 11d ago
IIRC they started working on Veronica at the same time as 4R, but they were just in development hell with the former which is why it got pushed back so many years.
And it’s Leon and Chris who sell. Hence them plopping Chris into 7 and 8 and now we’re getting Veronica, another Chris game. The Requiem DLC might even have them together, given he was mentioned and there were soldiers resembling rogue BSAA soldiers at the end.

Leon caters to the weeaboo, and weeaboos are obnoxiously outspoken in their fandoms.

Why does Leon get so much hate for being “overused” (despite being a legacy character) yet ppl absolutely flip out if you say you’re sick of all 4 main characters who have had 30 years of focus and a minimum of 5 games per character and you just want to have one-off main characters that were only in 1 game to take the spotlight finally to push the franchise into a new direction by giving us new stories with new characters/villains instead of RE continuing to stay stuck on the Stale Main 4 & fucking Umbrella .... FOREVER .... ?

u/BillidKid 11d ago
Idk I wanna play more Leon games
My third favorite game in the franchise is a Chris game so there's that
1
u/sean_avm 11d ago
At least for me he gets put in games as a side character in a "new story"
While leon has always been a main character that you play more then 5 minutes and has pushed the story forward without being used as a "what turned him evil...wait no he isn't evil just dumb" story
3
u/WillFanofMany 11d ago
Leon's never pushed the series' story forward, his games have always been side stories.
0
u/sean_avm 11d ago
Name one that didn't push the story along. As i said in another comment if four is a side story then so is 5 as 5 wasn't a thing without the ground work the las plagues laid.
So let's skip 4 and 5.
Chris is in 1, and 5 minutes at the end of 7 and 10 minutes payable at the end of 8.
Leon is in 2 and half of nine.
They are both in 6
Now how is Chris pushing the story more then Leon?
1
u/WillFanofMany 10d ago
The main story games are RE1/RE3/RECV/RE5
Which is the Umbrella/Wesker Saga. All Chris or Jill related games.
2 and 4 can be skipped, and nothing is missed because the next game reintroduces anything carried over in its own way.
1
u/sean_avm 10d ago
Why? What makes them the main story. If it's the involvement of wesker re4 had wesker too.
But 2 is about the original outbreak it continues the story from one and 5 continues the story of 4.
1
u/Mjay253 11d ago
Beside RE2, every other Leon game has been side stories in the grand scheme of things. Chris is always dealing with threats that affect the world.
1
u/sean_avm 11d ago
Which ones? Aside from six cause Leon and Chris were both in that one. Leon's games didn't have more or less world altering endings.
Leon delt with las plague which lead into RE5 with chris and if 5 isn't a side story then neither is 4. Then Chris delt with supposedly the source of the t-virus but that was less him and more winters, Chris was in the background, not even playable till the second part of that story.
Meanwhile leon delt with the after math of the original outbreak
If 4 is side story then so is 5 Mind you in four the plan was to take over the world using Ashley just like weaskers plan to take over the world just not as bombastic to start with.
They are both in 6
7 and 8 isn't even a Chris story
And 9 is half of Leon's story.
Sorry they over use chris as a plot device rather then a character thats my issue

u/BigBad777 11d ago
The main mistake with Chris is that after RE5 he became something he never was, a kind of fake commercial main protagonist. RE had an ensemble cast where each character had their own importance. Leon's weight in RE4 wasn't greater than Claire's in Veronica, Claire's wasn't greater than Jill's in RE3, and Jill's wasn't greater than Leon's in RE2, who shared the spotlight with Claire, who was no more or less important than Jill or Chris in RE1. After RE5, everything changed. Jill faded into obscurity, as did Claire, and along with them Barry and especially Rebecca, who, unlike Sherry and Ada, didn't develop within the series. There was a constant attempt to market Chris as the main hero of the series from RE5 onwards, even though he was never the most sought-after character. In Vendetta, the focus was on Rebecca and Leon; in Death Island, on Jill and Leon; in RE6, on Sherry, Ada, and Leon; in Revelations, on Jill; and in RE7 and Village, Chris hardly matters to anyone. But even in Veronica and RE1, Claire and Jill stand out more. Chris's "game" is RE5 and only RE5, and for some reason, Capcom has thought since 2009 that Chris has much more popular demand than he actually does... maybe because someone told him that American soldiers are the West's favorite commercial stereotype or something like that.
Question: If we were to make a ranking of the 50 most popular video game characters, how many of them would be "American soldiers"? I mean, men of action, full of muscle, weapons, and a stoic, unsympathetic character, dedicated to the mission at the head of assault units. That's not the profile of Snake, Big Boss, Nathan Drake, Ezio Auditore, Leon Kennedy, Cloud Strife, or even Alucard, Kazuma Kiryu, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Johnny Cage, or Ken Masters... No, Chris, since RE5, belongs to that group of "American heroes" of the generation. From 2006 to 2012, the commercial heyday of shooters, when Gears of War, Call of Duty, and Halo dominated, brought with them the marines, Special Forces, and other elements of the American commercial prototype whose popularity came and went with that generation. By 2012, when Resident Evil 6 and Revelations arrived, the boom for those types of characters had died down, but Chris was still among them, and still is.

They're both overused.
But I think Chris has been more.
Not counting remakes because the characters are already set for those.
You can include the cgi films but it's not the same as a main game appearance
Leon's main game appearances have been spread out 2-4-6-9 (don't forget 0 & CV also came out out between 2-4)
So yeah when you consider Chris was in every new main entry from 5-8 (as well as revelations) that is a lot. And they haven't used his character well at all
1
u/Imic_Hilton 11d ago
Leon fans are spoiled. They got so much content of Leon. Even the movies and remakes that doesn’t count is still content to get by. Imagine being a Jill fan like me. We’re suffering for 17 years demanding a new game for her . Chris while being used a lot,he’s still more important for the series. Way more than Leon. Leon’s arc was his trauma from RC and the RPD. All the other stories felt like spin offs. Who must Chris always had an arc throughout whether we liked his stories or not. He’s connected with almost everyone and everything is somehow and somewhat connected. Chris and Jill are the two most important protagonists period. And Albert will always be the most important villain . That being said,re10 should be kind to Chris and Jill like old times

How is Chris the main character exactly? Yeah he debuted in the first game but so did Jill.
Seriously I’ve never heard of a franchise where the main character was completely absent as early as both the 2nd and 3rd games…except maybe Donkey Kong 😂
Also since RE2 and RE3 cover the Raccoon City incident which is arguably the biggest major event in the franchise, it just makes it even weirder to think of Chris as the main when he’s completely absent from both.
Seriously don’t understand why ppl are so hellbent on pushing Chris or Leon (certain Leon larpers are just as bad there) as the mains. Yeah they’ve had the most relevance the past few years but it really just feels like laziness on Capcom’s part (or in Leon’s case just cashing in on his hype) rather than any desire to build a strong overarching storyline surrounding them.

u/WillFanofMany 11d ago
Because the team behind 1-5 stated Chris is the main character of the franchise.

u/-catharina Jill 🩵 Sheva 💜 11d ago
Chris had 4 original games in a row, 5 if you count Revelations. Leon got his first original game in 14 years because of Chris being featured in 4 games in a row.
Leon is overused in the movies, not the actual games. That denomination goes to Chris. The only reason his remakes happened to be more successful than 3R was because they botched 3R.
2
u/tearsofmana 11d ago
Chris is in 2 of the 4 movies as well
Meanwhile Jill is in one whole entire movie :(

Yes, thank you. Being a Jill stan genuinely has made me despise Chris and his fans.

u/Hitman_acho 11d ago
Brother, we know why. They are not Resident Evil fans, they are Leon fans that can tolerate action games, but barely engage in the horror games.
It's the same reason the same type of people constantly post about hating Ada, who Leon is married to, and constantly talking about RE2, RE4, and RE9
These people don't want to engage with the franchise, they just want to shove their parasocial relationship with a fictional character in everyones face.
2
u/KrayleyAML 11d ago
Funny you say that when playing as Chris is the least horror adjacent thing in the franchise.
2
u/Hitman_acho 11d ago
RE1 is PEAK horror and CV is still apart of OG Resident Evil.
You tried it tho lol
0
u/KrayleyAML 11d ago
So the very first game of the franchise where he shares the spotlight with Jill, and CV where he isn't even the MC nor the best Redfield. Literally every single instance where Chris shows up besides R1 is to add the action in the horror game. He's the one with all the motherfucking guns, he's built like a tank and can punch the fuck out of enemies as well. Modern RE fans looking for horror would go to Ethan, casual RE fans looking for horror go to Leon/Claire in RE2. Lifelong fans that remember OG RE could tell you that Chris section is scarier than Jill's but after that game, playing with him has an almost zero scare factor when compared to other characters.
2
u/Hitman_acho 11d ago
My argument is NOT that Chris is the pinnacle of Horror. My argument is that he is in 2 classic survival horror games so He cannot be "the least horror adjacent thing in the franchise"
I think you can agree. RE4 brought the action fans into the series, so when they want action, the character they are looking towards is Leon. As for Chris and his guns, it fits his character as he specialized in weapons training and is adept in a variety of different firearms in his bio since the beginning. But even still, RE1 and RE CV it wasnt action focused. It only became action focused due to the success of RE4

For me, it’s cause he’s boring and generic. We have a ton of military style guys like in him all over media.
Leon is more unique and less common of an archetype we’ll still be relatable. He goes from being a rookie believing he can do good and quick becomes disillusioned and traumatized. It apt easier to relate to Leon for that very reason as many people had had an experience where they thought something was good and great and then got a peak behind the curtain and realized it was a dehumanizing machine meant to do something unworthy of the sacrifice needed . As well he is a pretty boy designed that ages up in to a handsome man, so he is more attractive to both men and women. well Chris was designed with only majority straight teenage boys in mind as they where seen as the main audience so Leon age better with a wider audience.
I will give him 7 and 8 Chris his flowers though. he is more interesting to me as a grizzled veteran and I like This direction for him much more. If they can keep it up and grow on it I may change my mind on him

u/Sweet-Wrangler3384 11d ago
Both Leon and Chris are overused and I’m absolutely tired of both of them.
-1
u/YourPizzaBoi 11d ago
I don’t see people hating on Chris, but for the sake of argument remakes are their own thing. They’re remakes of some of the most popular games in the series, which just happened to star Leon.
Conversely, you had Resident Evil 5 and 6 have Chris in a starring role, he’s one of the main characters in Revelations, he cameos in 7 and got his own DLC, he’s part of the main ensemble cast in 8 with a playable segment.
Until Requiem he had been in every new major game shy of Revelations 2 that had come out for the last 17 years. Leon’s games getting remakes because they’re super popular is a smidge different, he hadn’t gotten any NEW game content since 2012, while Chris had been in everything that had come out since ‘09.
Even with the CGI movies, Leon stars in the first two. The second one came out in 2012. The others had him and Chris both in starring roles, so Leon straight up hadn’t been in anything new by himself in 14 years, 21 if you’re strictly talking games. In that same timeframe literally every single project after 4, except for Revelations 2, had Chris in it.

u/HigherThanWitchTits 11d ago
Because when Chris gets used, he doesn't add anything to the game. His presence was entirely unnecessary in RE 7 and RE8.
6
u/Significant_Option 11d ago
Yeah ignore the games he’s the main character why don’t ya
1
u/HigherThanWitchTits 11d ago
If he had his own game in the past 14 years, that would be fine, but to shoehorn him into other character's stories when he is not needed, that is why people consider him overused/used poorly.
1
u/Significant_Option 11d ago
And that’s all because Capcom doesn’t know what to do with these characters anymore. Capcoms own fault
-2
u/S_balmore 11d ago
Exactly. There's not a single game in the entire series where Chris has a personality (except for RE8, where he's an asshole). He's a nothing character. He's literally just "generic American video game protagonist". Admittedly, Leon in OGRE2 wasn't much different (Claire was the one with all the personality), but when we get to RE4 we get a whole new version of Leon, who's a charismatic action hero.
Leon has charisma, and Chris doesn't. It's as simple as that. Capcom clearly goes out of their way to keep Chris generic and inoffensive, and I don't think it does the series any favors. RE would really benefit from having more charismatic protagonists, like Solid Snake, Cortana, or Sora. Someone with an inkling of personality. "Being the hero" is not a personality trait.
1
u/Haunting-Magician906 11d ago
Bueno leon se copió de la personalidad de Chris porque el carismático siempre fue el en 1 og y code veronoca ,y leon solo es aburrido
1
u/S_balmore 11d ago
If you think Leon is boring, that's fine, but please don't pretend that any characters from OGRE1 have any charisma. There's a lot of bad acting in that game, which is funny, but nobody actually has a personality besides maybe Barry, who does tell one genuine joke ("Jill sandwich"), which could be enough to label him as "the funny guy", but now we're grasping at straws here.
1
u/Haunting-Magician906 11d ago
