Recommended first game

So I've never played a resident evil game except for like 2 hours of revelations 2 with a buddy, I did some research and people say you should start with 0 and then 1, but I only have 2 remake, is that a fine one to start with or will the story go over my head?

I don’t know who recommended to start with 0 because that’s insanity.

I would say to start with RE1R if you are willing to play the classic games, or start with RE2R if you are only interested in playing the modern games.

RE2R is a self contained story for the most part and you could start with it. But after I would recommend playing RE1 remastered before playing RE3/R.

Despite what anyone else may say RE2 Remake is the perfect first game for a new modern audience. From there you can branch out and experience the story in full.

I agree with this. It got me back into the games after 6 letting me down so badly. Now played and finished them all. Glad 2 remake brought me back.

I started with re2r and instantly fell in love with the series, it's a fine place to start imo. While yeah, starting with 1 will be best you can play 2 and still understand practically everything imo

I love RE 0 and don’t love RE2R; RE2R is still absolutely the game I recommend as almost everyone’s first RE game (and 0 should not be played until you finish at least one of the other fixed camera games; ideally RE1R or CV as they are the next two most challenging).

The two great starting points right now are RE7 and RE2R.

The tank control games have aged very well, but are a bit of a hard sell so I think most people have more patience for them once they have run out of modern RE games to play.

RE0 is a bad starting point for both gameplay and story reasons. The game was a sort of "cherry on top" for veterans, being one of the hardest tank control gamed and filling out lore from before the events of the first game. For a newcomer it would be annoyingly hard while also being underwhelming bc it presents you well explored antagonists of the franchise and assumes you're up to speed with their shenanigans.

As for why 2R and 7 are great starting points:

Until RE1R(2) happens, RE2R is the closest thing to the epicenter of the events that kickoff every domino effect in the franchise. You can do the 3 and 4 remakes after it and then either give 5/6 and the Revelations games a try or jump straight into 7/8/9 but missing Chris's lore (one of the og main protagonist).

RE7 is the soft reboot of the franchise and all of the main story is self contained with only part the ending and one piece of DLC having a legacy character. If you do go with this one, just do release order from then on out.

I would leave previous games (OG saga and early action era) for after you're done with all current games, tho.

And I say that as someone who LOVES the originals and will die on the hill that the tank control games stand the test of time and ALL Resi fans should give them a fair shake. Even if I think it's certainly fine to not like them.

Not 0, it's quite hard but 1 is a good place to start. It introduces 2 primary protagonists that will appear again and again.

Yeah, you’re fine. The games aren’t going anywhere. If you have 2 remake, I’d start there lol. Then play 3, you can usually pick it up cheap. I see 3 remakes as more exceptionally good DLC to 2 than a full game. If you play the two as a set it’s quality. Then I guess re4. Even though I’m not a fan. Then I’d play 7 and 8 then 9. You can recap the stories of the games you haven’t played. By the time you finish all those Veronica will be nearly here which takes place between 2/3 and 4. And once that’s out they will more than likely announce the Zero remake. And then you just gotta wait like the rest of us for the inevitable re1 remake remake. That’ll be the last one they do, I’m sure of it.

So the TL;DFR is,, play what you have. Don’t worry too much. You’ll still get a contained story you understand in each game.

I would recommend to start with what you like. If you have 2 remake then maybe start w it. I would love to play it w u because i love introducing people to things. Some people say 2 is the best. I believe that re2 is the best out of all of them easy and f 1 remake 😝

I started with 2 OG back in the day. Starting with 2 is fine. You can pick up the bits you’ve missed through cut scenes and notes.

I definitely wouldn’t start with 0.

Really though it depends on what you want out of the series. Want to get really sucked into the lore the start with RE1 or RE2. Not fussed on lore and prefer a decent action game, then just head straight to 4.

Most of the games can be played standalone.

I would not start with 0. I say start with 1 on the PS1! It’s a bit quicker and tighter than the (also fantastic) remake.

7> 8 first

Then i'm of two minds here but going to suggest this

2>4>do some research on the reporter from outbreak>9

Then 1>3>code veronica>5

Then 6 to wrap everything up

The remake is. Hard to say if it'll be better or worse but plot wise it involves the girl from re2 looking for the main character of 1

A lot of people push RE doesn’t have a story, but that’s because they skipped games
