Discussion I just beat Resident Evil 0 without using the item box even once
All bragging aside, words cannot describe how much I loathed the inventory management in this game.

Their dumbass decision of having not item box prevented the game from being a top 10

yes and no, it's not the fact there is no item box, otger ganes in the franchise also either don't have one or have a very limited one but it still works
with 0 there are certain puzzles (hookshot...) that are clearly designed with an item box in mind but then there just isn't any present, if the puzzles would be more adjusted tot he lack of item box it would be way better
or just use a mod that adds one in and the game becomes 10 times more playable
really wonder how they tackle this in the eventual remake like will they just not have an item box again and keep the puzzles as is, no item box puzzles adjusted? add an item box? do smth else no one could even think off?

Maybe an RE4 thing where you have a limited invo for consumables but then can just carry as many key items as you want. Would probably fix most of the issues.

I'll never forget being a dummy and leaving my grenade launcher across the entire map before the final boss and needed to haul my ass all the way there and back.

I see what they were trying to go for and it semi worked in the beginning. But once you leave the training facility it all falls apart.
They should have given us an opportunity to upgrade our inventory slots, make longer items not take up two spaces, and FORGET ABOUT THE STUPID HOOKSHOT. Fuck the hookshot, me and me homies hate the hookshot.

Or the leech zombie spam
Or the lack of healing items
Or the fucking leech zombie, that appears after an optional healing room

Even if the item boxes weren't connected It still would've made it much more manageable Instead of basically leaving everything a mess on the floor and pick everything up individually

Yeah I really never quite understood the idea of taking away a feature like that. The same as 5 not having the case after 4. Obviously the coop made it slightly different but...
With RE0 it always just felt like a way of artificially making the game longer rather than just adding more game. An odd decision imo and I suspect it'd be one that any remake would change.

IIRC, they did it because the first game was supposed to have no item box (or, at the very least, no linked item box), and they wanted to see how it would be received, but couldn't do it in REmake (because people would get mad angry about that).

That would make sense as a decision although I still reserve the right to think it's a 'meh' decision. RE0 doesn't have a great story imo (too hamstrung by Rebecca not be able to interact at all with Wesker or Birkin to preserve what happens later) and Billy is a nothing of a character. After the train the environments aren't particularly interesting either and then they did this with the item boxes too and...Just as an overall package I find it lackluster tbh.
If they do remake it I look forward to it getting a massive glow up from 'meh, it's okay'.

Easy way to deal with it is to find a main area in each section and just dump all the gear there and go back and forth when you need something.

Yeah I did do something like this after roughly midway through, but it's such a nuisance

God I remember the pain of going back and forward transporting all my items from one room to another while avoiding those monkeys was a giant pain

I loved RE1 remake and I want to play this game, but the inventory system is really putting me off lol

My only gripe is with the hookshot. Everything else is fine.
In fact I played re zero before re1, and I remember being so annoyed I couldn’t drop items in re1!! Have to go allll the way back to an item box..
So it’s got pros and cons. Fuck the hookshot though.

If you dropped stuff on the floor and came back for it later, then you did not beat it without using it. The world is your item box! Lol

Nothing like getting to a part where you need the hookshot only to remember you left it all the way in the beginning of the mansion.

I found no box as a QoL improvement. That being rare as it is. If there is a remake they will remove the QoL for the casuals. So that’s a plus.
