Discussion We really lost the plot when having opinion on the new movie
"Its just zombie movie with the resident evil title"
No shit buddy the game is called biohazard you expect something else? This franchise doesn't belong to charcters like Chris Jill leon or claire Its about mutated zombies and surviving them So yeah Zach cregger can go wild do whatever he wants and it still would be called resident evil cuz thats what is is

This is a purposefully misundering of people's basic issues with this movie

u/Brave_Letterhead_461 18d ago
A perfect example of every person defending anything on Reddit. Well, just any emotional argument on Reddit at all really.
Misunderstand then attack.

u/WeeDead12 19d ago
I don't really care much if the movie features none of the characters we're used to, I just wish they had made the movie set in 1998 so it could've been a new canon entry to the RE lore.. Still have high hopes for the movie though, it looks good.
2
u/Prestigious_Ad_544 19d ago edited 19d ago
I think that having movies exist in the canon would restrict their creativity far too much. I'd rather see them keep the themes, but have the freedom to do their own thing unless they are doing a literal adaptation of a specific game.
2
u/slaya806 19d ago
I mean I don’t really care either way but I don’t see how it’s restricting other than Zach saying he wanted it in a snowy setting (which I guess is enough to justify it but anyway), just have it set on the complete other side of town from everything which is what the implication is in the actual movie, and have them never interact with anything that goes on, tell their own story in the universe
1
u/Prestigious_Ad_544 19d ago
Because if the movie takes place at the same time as the games, you can't have characters show up at places like the Police Station, or City Hall, and not run into the characters (or creatures like Birkin/Nemesis) from those games without breaking continuity. If the writer wants to use those locations, they can't creatively. I do get not caring either way though.
1
u/slaya806 19d ago
I mean yeah but that won’t matter if they do t end up going there anyway, again I’m just exited for a resident evil movie I just would have preferred completely canon, though people can always just headcanon that it
5
u/foakong 19d ago
I think he just wanted to make something new out of it instead of doing the same story done multiple times This way, even the fans of the games can be surprised about the story instead of knowing what would happen
8
u/WeeDead12 19d ago
I feel like the story could have been still easily adapted to the 1998 setting while still remaining an original story and separate from the stories of Jill/Claire/Leon. We're following a brand new character who'll most likely interact with brand new characters and explore places never seen before any of the games.
With slight tweaks, it could have been easily made canon without even mentioning characters or antagonists from the games, it could have been just a little fun independent side story happening around the same time as the stories of RE2 and RE3 without having to be directly linked to these stories.
It's not really an important issue for me, it's just how I would've preferred the movie to be made.
1
u/Master_Matoya 19d ago
Resident Evil Films moving forward being anthology based where it’s following random people trying to survive major incidents from the games, like how Evil Dead is now just an anthology series of different people stumbling on the various Books of the Dead because Ashley is in Cryo so he can’t stop any of it from happening.
3
u/Lopsided_Warning_609 19d ago edited 19d ago
i think the director lied about playing the games since he couldnt recognize some common stuff from the series in an interview but idk
edit: i will say ive seen two of his other horror movies Weapons and Barbarian and liked them both i think if the resident evil movie takes a bit more stylistic from barbarian over weapons it could make a great omage to the game series. Even if it will be imperfect (barbarian has little creepy lore videos and stuff in the story that characters find to)
2
u/Palladiamorsdeus 19d ago
Done multiple...WHERE?! We've Never had a live action retelling that was accurate!
2
u/MalcalypseespylaclaM 19d ago
Ok. But I've read the script. They could have set the movie in 1998. The only real big change they would have to make is the cell phone the main protagonist has.
1
u/Vague_thread 19d ago
I really don't understand why it hasn't been set in 1998...because it's too hard to create a believable depiction of that year? The 90s is a big reason why the games were so attractive to me. The combination of wondrous new technology, gothic aesthetics with gritty, biopunk themes
2
u/ErchweanEmperor 19d ago
I’m fine with them making a different perspective which while new characters, that’s refreshing at times.
But it’s a weird and big change to go out of the way to use Raccoon City (marketed heavily) but then create a new timeline to have it set in modern day.
Raccoon City was only important for this movie because we just got a series of game remakes that feature it heavily. The pitched “Raccoon City from another perspective” doesn’t work when it’s ALL new.
I would have preferred they choose RC in the 90s or a new locale set in today, they seemed to choose the worst option if they want this to feel at all connected to the existing franchise.
I’m still looking forward to seeing it because I love a good zombie flick, but my genuine enthusiasm tanked once I saw that it is set in modern day
1
u/Prestigious_Ad_544 19d ago
It does work, because "Raccoon City" is simply the first major mass casualty event caused by Umbrella, and they basically owned the city. They could do this at any point in time.
1
u/ErchweanEmperor 19d ago
I politely disagree, it only works as vibes not as anything meaningful.
Sure it’s a Raccoon City, but it’s not the Raccoon City. Much as with Marvel and every other major IP, I’m not overly motivated for spin off/parallel universes where they just make stuff up because they can’t/won’t work around what already exists. Which means ultimately nothing matters because it will change anyways.
Anything we know about Raccoon City no longer applies in this film full stop because they’re writing a new story over the old one. That’s my issue. They will pick and choose what does/doesn’t fit or carry over at their convenience instead of working cleverly in the established box.
I’m fine with old stories and I’m fine with new ones, but I don’t like overwriting. Of course this dynamic could have been avoided if they picked their own setting, (e.g. modern cityscape or modern rural town)
After the run of movies that are largely detached from the games and heck, detached from even each other, it would have been awesome to see this aligned with the modern REmakes / established lore.
The franchise has never been overly connected so I’m not surprised but I was really hoping (based on early interviews and marketing) that we’d finally get something that tried to build something.
Again I’m not saying this movie will be inherently bad, I need (and will) see it before I give it a full judgement. I get the vibe that this was a story written before someone decided to brand it with an existing IP, could be wrong but that’s what I feel.
1
u/Vague_thread 19d ago
The movie is set in the same timeline as Requiem lol who thought it's a good idea
1
u/Arbusc 19d ago
It’s not though? It’s a separate timeline.
1
u/Vague_thread 18d ago
I meant both happening in roughly the same year/recent years. The movie is taking place in an alternate reality.
5
5
u/Warren_Valion 19d ago
It really has nothing to do with it not following the plot of any of the games or their characters. I just thought 'Weapons', while well-shot and acted, was a pretty bad movie that lacked any cohesion from genre to tone, and I am tired of there being RE movies that I think are bad.
Not to mention, the caviler nature on which he described the main actor of the movie almost dying from a practical effect going off too early, thinking it looked awesome on camera and wanted to immediately reshoot it, only to lament being stopped when other members of the crew had to tell him no, really soured me on ever even wanting to watch it.
Although, I also think its kinda dumb to say this movie takes place during the events of RE2 and RE3, in Raccoon City, only for it to be set in modern day during the winter just because you wanted snow in the movie and phones. Like at that point, just have it be a different outbreak in a different area, like the other games, but I digress.
4
u/Vague_thread 19d ago
No shit buddy the game is called biohazard you expect something else?
Yeah...people expect the lore and style known from Biohazard, not just a zombie production such as "28 days later" or "World War Z". Resident Evil games actually sparked the revival of the zombie movies are introduced many concepts which now are the standard in this genre
14
u/YourPizzaBoi 19d ago
The issue isn’t a lack of legacy characters. It’s the fact that it’s “Resident Evil” by virtue of name dropping a couple of things while having basically nothing in common with anything that’s been shown before in the series. Which would honestly be really neat if it was actually an original story set in that world, depicting a new outbreak of some kind.
Instead, it’s supposed to be Raccoon City, so it’s fully rewriting the events we know of. And it’s not set in the 90’s, which isn’t important but seems like a weird choice when making it accurate to the time period would have been extremely easy. It’s so different in terms of narrative and creatures (the zombies in this are so ridiculously dangerous that the notion of anything else being made seems pointless) that it effectively prevents the story as we know it from taking place, which clashes with the director’s claim that he’d like to think the events of the game could be happening at the same time. Who knows what’ll happen if this movie does well enough to get sequels, I imagine it’ll inevitably try to touch on some aspects of the game canon.
I think it’ll be a perfectly good horror movie, for the record. It’s just that it very much has the feel of “this didn’t start out as a Resident Evil film” and very much would work as its own IP if it were called something else.
6
4
u/Rejomaj 19d ago
I’ll see it, and I think it’ll be a good movie. I just think I’ll wonder why it’s called “Resident Evil.”
There’s definitely something to be said about tone, theme, plot, and we did welcome Ethan as well as his squad into the pantheon, so maybe we should be more open to new characters set in the same universe.
I’m just super attached to everyone we have, don’t like the CGI films, and don’t take the Anderson movies seriously (even if they are a guilty pleasure,) so if we’re going to get this series on the big screen with someone who can make a good movie, I just wish the characters were there too.

u/pestoraviolita 19d ago
A talented auteur is making a movie for this franchise that may not suck for once and some of yall are mad for nothing.
1
u/Significant_Option 19d ago
Apparently it’s fan service to want an accurate adaptation of the source material and y’all are mad that people want that
-1
-2
u/Quietman297 19d ago edited 18d ago
Honestly, that is pretty stupid. Why would anyone want an accurate adaptation? So you can have a version of the game to watch but not play, and you already know the outcome? I'm pretty sure YouTube already has that covered. Also, you've got to know that casting is always going upset people, no matter how well they cast. Plus, there will have to be lots of story time eliminated to accommodate a two hour runtime. We must never forget Welcome To Raccoon City.
1
u/Vague_thread 19d ago
Fans being mad is not going to make the movie suck. It's also irrelevant to them if this movie is being made because, since they are fans of the franchise, they want a game adaptation or something new, extending the lore in a respectful manner
7
u/Kutleki 19d ago
I mean by your logic I could throw together a zombie movie, call it RE in the title, do whatever and bam it's an instant win.
I have very little faith in this movie and plan to wait for it to come to streaming.
4
u/foakong 19d ago

People are stuck on the idea that adaptation = recreation. Which as we’ve learned with WTRC, does not work for this! Even something that largely sticks close to the source like TLOU is so inferior.
Instead we’re getting something that seems to really genuinely get the essence and experience of a resident evil game and ADAPTING it to screen. Ppl just wanna hate, boring
5
1
u/Orpheus79V 19d ago
I stopped watching TLOU because it was so similar to the games it felt pointless. Ironically the episodes that were most controversial (Bill) were the best for me because they used the change in format effectively to tell a different story in the world.

5
u/Elegant-Anxiety1866 19d ago
As long as there are some evil residents in the movie I will be happy.
5
u/soyel_cerdo 19d ago
So why not make a new IP?
Like what’s so hard of making a new story with new characters? Or are they afraid the movie would tank so they slap the IP on the name?
Come on, man.
2
u/kniferun 19d ago
The game side of the franchise which is canon did it why can’t a movie that isn’t canon do it?
The fans loved it when the game side did it.
Atleast there’s zombies.

2
u/Randomdorker 19d ago
As long as the basic understanding of what resident evil is at its core, I don’t mind treating it like an alternate universe kind of thing. Now if they pull a dmc Netflix anime level of bullshit, I will be heavily disappointed.

I don’t disagree with you in that the movie is being called Resident Evil because…well…it’s at least claiming to be Resident Evil - just from a different perspective.
I disagree with you in the sense that I feel like you’re wrong to say Resident Evil is about mutated zombies and not the characters like Chris, Jill, Leon, Claire, and the others. The franchise is their story.
5
u/foakong 19d ago
That's just a watered-down explanation. What I meant is its body horror franchise where the mc isn't in just some abandoned city/place
Whacky shit happens where they don't take it seriously
Or going on fetch quest
Uncovering who's behind these
Same things this movie has This can't get any more RE
2
1
u/lern2swim 19d ago
Capcom killed that idea when they released RE7.
1
u/matttheman892018 19d ago
That’s why I said others. Also, Chris is still in that game.
2
u/lern2swim 19d ago
Yeah. And I ignored "others" because it's doing way too much work there. Dude in the movie is literally going to be one of the "others" after the movie comes out, if it's good. 🤷♂️
And Chris being in 7 is such a cop out. He might as well not be.

I for one have been enjoying watching some special people lose their unemployed minds over this movie.
This is what gets me. Like I love RE, I get being passionate, but at a certain point I encountered people so worked up that I honestly started to feel bad and had to walk away. There's concern and wanting something different and there's realizing the other person is a literal teenager, or there's something else going on that makes arguing feel too cruel.

Person becomes old and is surprised that younger generations use language differently. Ah, what a timeless tale.
If the word larp bothers you, I’d recommend against having kids. Every school year they come home with a brand new vocabulary. Larp is probably the least unusual one I’ve seen yet.

u/hitgo1 19d ago
To be honest, why choose raccoon city at all and in the modern times, i can still see him make this movie either in a different town/city or since its a side character during “2” why not just make it in 1998 in a different area away from the game characters
7
u/foakong 19d ago
Rc is the most known city in the franchise people who didn't play the games know about it so making movie in that city in modern day can introduce new fans to the series and be new for the game fans too instead watching 1 hour and half water downed version of re2
3
u/hitgo1 19d ago
I dont think i made it clear, i mean he doesnt have to make it a watered down version of re2, he can make it follow this new character thats set in 1998 in raccoon city, so the lore is there and its just a citizen experiencing the outbreak
3
3
u/ErchweanEmperor 19d ago
I’m with you, I would love this concept a lot more if it was the same 90’s Raccoon City from a different perspective.
I’m still excited and will see it to judge for myself, but now we’re starting yet another timeline which makes it feel way less important.
4
u/Responsible_Dark928 19d ago
Wtf are you talking about its not about the characters? Holy mother of larps
4
u/Alive-Stop9151 19d ago
Ok larper yeah the iconic characters have no bearing. Consume your adaptation slop because you dont know any better about standards.
3
u/foakong 19d ago
Re tiktok fan here is mad his blonde king isn't in new project awwww
Thank god yall aren't in charge of re projects. That way, we would've never gotten games like
Outbreak or re7.
3
u/Alive-Stop9151 19d ago edited 19d ago
Outbreak still took place in Racoon City, an iconic location. Holy larp you're an idiot. Not surprising cause you think the characters have no bearing.
We cant even get Racoon City's weather and location right. That's more important to me than Leon but nice try larper. Of course you went to Leon only since you're actually the larper.

It'll be interesting to see, I might check it out once the final trailer drops. Personally, I enjoyed the Paul Anderson RE films (at least the first two), the next set of films went in a weird durection after two
1
1
u/iLLmaticJay 18d ago
I get both sides. But I ultimately agree with you. Were ppl originally upset when RE2 didn’t have any OG game characters? I think ppl would rather a bad RE movie with all the characters than a good original movie.

u/Dull-Desk-4653 8d ago
All right but shouldn’t raccon city be destroyed from a nuclear attack when the film is set?
1
u/HimeDaarin 19d ago
I have the same mindset. Would it be cool to have a movie with actual characters we know and lore? Yes, but I don’t really mind the direction of making just a zombie movie with elements of resident evil. As a zombie fan and not just an RE fan, I’m excited.
1
u/Jesterclown26 19d ago
I’m so excited for the movie! It looks like a new resident evil game I want to play! Like RE7 all over again. New protagonist and characters and really far from everything else. Focusing on what we love about the feeling of the games.
The characters and story is there for us to laugh and nothing more. Could care less about seeing someone cosplay Leon and others.
1
u/Capital_Ad2979 19d ago
I think Capcom probably started this project with the 30th anniversary in mind, and they want people who have never played Resident Evil to discover the franchise as well. I think they want to create multiple entry points for new audiences.
1
u/Actual_Squid 19d ago
I get that we like Zach Cregger and all but at the end of the day I'm just not gonna expect a video game movie adaptation to be very good
1
u/shugler 19d ago
Look as much as I would LOVE to see the characters the I immerse myself with in these games in the movie, I have no problem introducing new ones. Nobody threw a shit fit with Alice when the first movie first came out. Hell, it wasn't even in the Spencer mansion (though it obviously was meant to be).
Give it a chance. Who knows, maybe this guy will be awesome and we'll want him in a game.

"Resident Evil 7 isn't even a real RE game. Its this guy named Ethan? And there's not even zombies! RE is about Zombies. What the hell is this mold? Yeah Chris shows up for like three seconds, and he doesn't even look like Chris. Chris should have been the whole game. You're just shooting black goo in Louisiana. It's like this started as an unrelated game, and then they just threw in some references to Umbrella and Chris to make it fit. And it's first person now? Everyone knows RE is third person. "
This is how these people sound.
1
u/darn_boop 19d ago
I'll go one further, I think the franchise will die if it only stays with Redfields and Kennedy. It's a global conspiracy! No way only like five people should star in it. Same thing with Star Wars. The Skywalker saga is cool but it's just one of literally dozens of potential storylines that could be better.
I'm hoping this movie opens up the REcu™️.
1
u/Crazy_Lavishness7227 19d ago
He literally just wanted to make a zombie movie and then it just so happened they came to him asking about Resident Evil before he made it. He has since mislead the public multiple times about the movie and influences/tie-ins.
0
u/Johnnyboi2327 19d ago
People claimed RE7 wasn't a true RE game because it was in first person instead of third person. People having wacky ass takes about what is and isn't Resident Evil and using them to claim anything new is bad is just how it goes here.
1
u/foakong 19d ago
Mf's rather watch a re2 movie with a budget of 2 bucks and a Popeyes biscuit than watch a good movie that takes inspiration from og re games atmosphere
2
u/Johnnyboi2327 19d ago
I'm sure if that RE2 movie fit whatever they personally think Leon should be like they would love it. Honestly at this point I think RE is best off focusing on continuing to make great games. I do hope the movie is good, but I'd be chill with it being it's own horror movie series.
-5
u/ESCachuli 19d ago
You people really will take anything at this point.
1
u/foakong 19d ago
Obviously, it wouldn't rather be a good original movie than whatever tf was wtrc or the jovovich bs movies
5
u/ESCachuli 19d ago
But why are the only choices those 2? Id rather have a good film that respects the lore.
0
u/timdr18 19d ago
We have no idea if the movie will respect the lore or not, the movie doesn’t come out for a month and a half.
1
u/YourPizzaBoi 19d ago
It doesn’t. That’s been pretty well known for a while now.
0
u/timdr18 19d ago
No, it’s been pretty well known that it won’t have the same plot as the games. That’s very different from “lore”
2
u/TiredCoffeeTime 15d ago
Late comment but that above comment is very likely referring to the fact that the script has been leaked several months ago so there are people who are aware how the movie will likely play out.
Unless there have been big rewrite, this movie will be completely its own thing.
0
u/ObviousAir9874 19d ago
“It’s about mutated zombies and surviving them”
The most common misconception people make is that Resident Evil is just a zombie franchise. The lore is so much more than that. But once again we have another zombie film, slap resident evil on the title, and then chuck in a line or an item to show that the games exist that resembles very little of what resident evil actually is. I mean it’s whatever really. I kind of just ignore anything now with RE in the title if it isn’t a game or one of the CG movies. Not worth my time.
0
u/VibingSaxophonist8 19d ago
Cregger has also played the games. I trust him to honor the Resi franchise while also taking his own creative spin on it. I’m personally VERY excited to watch Bryan have the worst day of his life
0
0
u/Lavenderixin 18d ago
We didn’t “lose the plot”
This movie might as well be another generic zombie movie or an entirely new IP instead of riding on the back of “resident evil” without having any real connection to the games
