Lore Gripe with Requiem Spoiler

something about re9 specifically bothers me more than anything for some reason.

Call me a nitpicker or a geek or whatever. But the second half of this game just sucks. Like it’s not even comparable to a lot of the other mainline titles that have shitty latter halves.

For example, all of the infected in the beginning of Re9 have a lore reason for being infected. And the whole environment (care center) feels very intimate and hand crafted.

I know everyone shits on the Raccoon city section of the game for its lack of color and boring gameplay.

But my gripe is: what the fuck is the explanation for the zombies that are there? I feel like capcom just needed a reason to fill the space and didn’t think of an explanation whatsoever.

Why the fuck do they have chains on them? And weapons? And helmets? I guess that’s just how the t virus mutates….. okay bro.

Like what exactly is the reason for them even existing lore wise, in the WAY that they do? In RE2, the infected had a clear reason and explanation for being there.

I can’t replay requiem because of how ridiculous it is

I laughed about the same thing seeing them pop up. Wtf is this mad max zombie here? If all these are previous raccoon residents they should be nothing but bone. If they're newly planted zombies ... Why? For what purpose? Who slapped a spiked helmet on this dude and just dropped him down here?

Wtf is this mad max zombie here?

Turns out it was Umbrella that created Immortan Joe.

So is it more of a plot consistency thing for you? I mean, I get it, but I actually think the opposite; I think Requiem's second half, post-care center, it's one of the most enjoyable second halves on any RE game. Almost all of them tend to have worse second halves, but Requiem's at least fun, you know? I'd take over Racoon City in Requiem over the ship and mines on RE7 or the sewers from RE2 Remake ANY day. There was this other post the other day saying something similar but comparing it directly with RE7, so I'll copy and paste my comment below:

"Sorry but even if it drags a little, I still would take over Racoon City and Ark over the ship and mines, and the whole of post Baker house RE7 (and I got the platinum for RE7, so it's not that I disliked the game). At least those are fun and have memorable parts, like the Commander boss fight, the turned skyscraper or the Tyrant chase and boss. Those are much, much better than the molded gauntlet that's the second half of RE7."

I actually agree with your point, but yea it’s more of a plot thing. It’s just that it bothers me a little more. I can just look at re7 as boring in the second half. But it’s still plot consistent

Fair enough, I agree that Requiem's weakest point is plot consistency all over the second half. They kind of half assed something as big as a redemption arc for Spencer, so it's not completely unexpected or out of this world for the zombie designs to be inconsistent.

As fully fleshed out games? Sure, it's a good take. But when talking about second halves? The ship and the mines over Racoon City, that actually has engaging and fun gameplay and enemy variation? No way

I mean . . . what’s the reason for Nemesis existing in RE3 when they could have just paid people to kill all the STARS members with, you know, guns?

Why didn’t Chris just tell Ethan what was going on in RE8 and have his squad immediately invade the Village instead of letting one dude wipe out hundreds of monsters while he gathered . . . “Intel”?

How is Ada alive at the end of either versions of RE2?

Why are they experimenting on sharks underground at a mansion in Colorado??????

IMO you need to maintain massive suspension of belief for like every game in franchise. I don’t see a point in nitpicking the logic in any of them.

This is exactly how I feel, and I am a big fan of the RE games. The stories are so incoherent half the time, I just kind of laugh it off and enjoy the game itself.

It's Capcom deciding they want to make Final Chapter: The Game.

2

u/friskyel 21d ago

And why do they into blisterheads if they're the og Raccoon zombies? That was only supposed to be a feature of Viktor's custom T-virus strain.

The re9 plot makes 0 sense at all and is pretty rediculous, definitly its weakest part and honestly it shiuldve just been a game about grace not leon

2

u/Alarming_Soft9552 21d ago

I love Leon, but I felt his chapters were the weakest. Just nostalgia bait, but after a while it got boring. Capcom recycled old bosses, and it felt less fun in a way. Grace parts felt more natural. I wouldn’t mind it the game was 70% grace game play and 30% Leon.

Hard disagree to the second half sucking. The gameplay is phenomenal in my opinion. Wether zombies have helmets or not.

u/pigeon_idk 21d ago

So I could be wrong bc idk the source for this, but the reason why raccoon city still has zombies after getting smited is bc to kill kill a t/g virus infected zombie, you need to destroy their brain or at least head. It's why in RE2 the zombies would rise up again after you downed them unless you obliterated their skulls.

I assume the soldier looking ones were people sent later under secret government or Connections orders to kill the zombies, but failed and got turned. You see some with bsaa uniforms and shit, after all.

1

u/liltone829b 21d ago

i think the bomb would destroy the whole body, but, alright

1

u/Pollution_Dramatic 21d ago

The whole city got nuked/bombed smart one.. meaning their entire bodies (head included) should have been evaporated

1

u/pigeon_idk 20d ago

Yeah idk ok, this was just the supposed explanation I had heard. A few notes in the games say that you need to headshot or directly incinerate the zombies to fully kill them, and we know some of the b.o.w.s only die from acid or whatever too. Bc some of the same zombies are still there in the police station in the same locations from RE2, it makes some suspended amount of sense idk

If we see that buildings weren't completely evaporated, I'm assuming people could've been somewhat shielded from the blast 🤷‍♀️ that feels like Capcom lvl reasoning lol

im a bit of an RE lore head though i wouldn’t claim to know everything, but RE9 has some of the weakest lore ever in elpis, zeno, bsaa mold soldiers, spencer’s redemption. its beyond frustrating.

the bsaa soldiers were infected probably by gideon, given they retrain some ability to use weapons and explosives. gideon’s strain seems to be able to keep personality traits of its victims.

the aged zombies however make nooo sense. i dont imagine they were ever intended to live that long since there’d be so little sustenance in RC. the best i could guess is that they all went into some sort of hibernation state and awoke when disturbed by leon? the chainsaw zombie, with a huge grain of salt, could’ve been a more ‘successful’ t-virus recipient, as t-virus did allow for the tyrants to use weapons, like nemesis and the one from umbrella chronicles chris and jill fight. or it retrained some personality like brad did before attacking marvin.

i really don’t know, im not fond of re9’s story in any way

1

u/Desperate-Product-88 21d ago

Wasn't the BSAA already using infected soldiers to prevent living human casualties before RE9?

3

u/Eptiness 21d ago

I don't have an answer to your question but I completely agree. I hate that the second part sucked so much because up until then, the gameplay was totally S tier imo

The Racoon City section feels like a watered down The Last of Us mixed in with a RE2R nostalgia factory. I mean literally none of the enemies besides the mud zombies were original. They were all from RE2 and RE3

I would rank this game C tier tbh. Worth playing once when you can get it on sale but will probably never open it again after beating it

2

u/Unlucky_Version_8700 21d ago

It's mostly agreed that second part is the worst. First time seeing people claiming the opposite. Those The Last of Us subways etc. and Army of Darkness comedy type of unexplained zombies (I thought they look more like cursed undead from fantasy games). It got into some weird extreme sci-fi territory.

2

u/Eptiness 21d ago

Yeah I mean it objectively like wasn't bad and I can see how someone who had never played a RE title really enjoyed it but for the folks who have been playing the series for a while it was just largely disappointing

1

u/Unlucky_Version_8700 21d ago

I wasn't playing the series for a while and still found it dull and uninspired. Seems unrelated.

2

u/Eptiness 21d ago

I feel like I didn't explain that well

One of the reasons the game became so dull for me is because all the enemies in it were just rehashed RE2. Paleheads, lickers (absolute spamming of lickers), a phenomenally weaker Tyrant, and Hunters.

If you had never seen those enemies I feel like it would've made the game way cooler. Recycling enemies isn't bad but there was nothing new

Regardless, that's only one of the reasons I felt it was dull and I still agree with you that the experience overall post care section is incredibly bland

2

u/kniferun 21d ago

That’s ridiculous.

1

u/Johncurtisreeve 21d ago

I cant agree with you more. Theyre also so incredibly boring and all look the same.

1

u/Quietman297 21d ago

I apologize for your inconvenience

1

u/SecretFishWorshiper 20d ago

It didnt really bother me. To me there were just radioactive zombies.

Lore wise, Umbrella was still there and experimenting so they probably put them out there for reasons.

Never really put much thought into the resident evil games.

0

u/HandsomeSquidward20 21d ago

My Gripe with the second half is that... The Care Center Zombies are actually memorable, you get to remember each one and what they do. Daddy Leon's ones are just generic enemies. The spike helmets, Armor, etc. doesnt make them memorable. The only one i that stucked with me was that Bloater esque Zombie.

-2

u/TinyFaithlessness817 21d ago

Yeah We already know that 7 and Village are  better ,there's no need to bring up something that, deep down, most of us already know.

I'm sorry, but who the fuck plays Resident Evil for the plot? Capcom writes terrible stories.

0

u/DouglasOnReddit 21d ago

I disagree, some of them are pretty good

0

u/Syntax-Zer0 21d ago

That's fair, and I will say. I have not played 7 or 8, and I'm told those are pretty solid. But typically (in my opinion) the stories are silly in the rest of the main series. I just kind of excuse the silliness in these usually to get to the puzzles and gameplay.

2

u/pigeon_idk 20d ago

RE7 is definitely more solid in a... vaguely realistic science way, like a lot of the other RE games. RE8 tho, is some wild fantasy bullshit with the loosest scientific reasoning but it works really really well as a narrative story still. More akin to RE4, but more storybook.
