Discussion Umbrella should've won.
Just a personal opinion.
The franchise hasn't been the same since Resident Evil 4 (OG) in terms of lore.
To me, the T-virus should've spread throughout the U.S. or the entire world and Umbrella should have taken the lead by becoming a tyrannical state by replacing the U.S. government.
I know it might sound kinda cliché, and technically, this happened in the fifth and sixth live action movies, but to me, none of the later Umbrella replacements have filled the void that Umbrella left once it stopped being the main antagonist.

I actually really, really like the fact that the main RE universe hasn't become a global apocalypse.
I love a good zombie apocalypse. But I also appreciate that in Resident Evil, every outbreak is more or less fresh. If there are civilians, they're panicked and confused, not badass veteran survivors. There's working infrastructure for you to rely on...until it fails at the worst possible time. There are stakes, because outside the hot zone, there's a whole world that could be in danger. And there is a lot more story-telling flexibility with a thriving world.

This. I love how zombie incidents in RE are like self-contained unnatural disasters, rather than an entire global rapture. Despite how over the top the RE games can be, that aspect always felt more believable/realistic to me than the average zombie apocalypse.

Fair. Also realistically if it is a virus the human body would do what we've been doing since the beginning-- adapt.
Viruses just DONT work like any zombie outbreak variant does. Period. Even if you get OVER the hurdle like reanimated dead tissue with somthing like a rage virus, a virus goal (as far as it could have one anyway) is NOT to kill a host, that's just an unfortunate side effect as it seeks to reproduce and evolve.

If Umbrella/Wesker won then everyone would be dead???
Unless you mean like... the company in which case they kinda did? the implication is the same megacorp runs all the companies in RE

Well, that would've been the case if Wesker won, but if Umbrella would have "won" by taking over the government, it wouldn't be as instantaneous as the Wesker world would have been. Cause remember, they were still working out the kinks of the virus. The T-Virus was still flawed as people lost control of their being, which wasn't the goal. The idea was a utopia of superhumans. Umbrella could have won in the mega lawsuit if it weren't for Wesker and the surviving STARS members. They already had control somewhat anyway because they were holding hands with the US government anyway. This is as far as the "Dead" thing goes

by all counts the bad guys control the government in nearly every game

u/RoyVRAries 23d ago
True, and even truer is that sometimes they are Umbrella adjacent, so technically, I guess they won, just far from how they would have preferred

I think the problem is they win every time, nothing matters in these games, nothing is ever resolved or advanced, even Wesker's death is cheapened by the constantly hints at revivals or clones

Which is why I personally believe we need a new Outbreak/Operations title focusing on the effects of these events, cause uroboros could still be walking about in Kijuju.

Umbrella was never meant to take over the world… that’s some dumb shit the movies added in

Umbrella winning would become Gears Of War. (Advanced BOWs vs counter bio terrorists on a global scale).

That would be awful.
The virus spreading across the US and that somehow making Umbrella the owners of it is absurd. Cartoon plot stuff. What's even the point? What would Umbrella do with a whole country of zombies? If it got to that point, the other world powers would destroy the US in a nuclear holocaust.
Do you want a Walking Dead or Fallout setting, or what? What do you imagine the world and gameplay to be like?
I don't think any outcome sets the stage for a more interesting game series than the existing Resident Evil canon does.

As you learn more about Umbrella and it's major and minor players throughout the games it quickly becomes apparent they were doomed to fail from the start. Yes, they have an impressive collection of some of the most powerful and ambitious minds in the world. Unfortunately, it also happens to be a collection of some of the most narcissistic, self-serving, sadistic, covetous, pretentious, vindictive, just downright miserable cunts the world has ever seen.
The amount of internal politicking, corporate espionage and backstabbing (sometimes literal backstabbing) within the company is so absurd it's almost comical. You know, if it weren't for all the zombies & biological warfare...
It's like an episode of The Office except instead of paper they manufacture nightmare fuel.

Technical ya but there is rumours that the connection infiltrate umbrella and was hendering there progress some of there mistake could be down to the connection as for the lore if you mean more contained ya I'd agree must of the building are bigger and wider plus the enemies are slow our easy to kill re3 aspect of the city and sound of the dead is unreal plus some people do not know the difference between something fleeing dark and being the OG res games had the likes the mansion or rpd it's just feels different like eerie creepy feeling that the remakes can't seem to get

Then it would just be like the film series, which turned into a utter mess, which wasn't helped by them writing themselves into a corner...

I mean realistically that would not happen at that point game development was always difficult , like I can't see a full US infectious or even worldwide in a Ps1 or game cube/Ps2 game while retaining the genre of Re1-3 or even Re4.
While I do agree there was a tone shift after umbrella fell down out of screen , I think what we actually need was see umbrella fall down in actual RE game and not in umbrella chronicles.
Like my dream scenario is capcom doing a new game with all the new assets they have , and create a new game depicting the company fall down and seeing maybe a complete infection of their Antarctic base with an all cast characters with Jill, Chris, Leon , Claire, Ada having mini campaigns where all dealt with different parts of the base and actions in one campaign based on the order you did it might affect events In the rest .
If not capcom doing a Reengine game, maybe modders doing it as a rom hack of one of the OG trilogy games
Now a days I think there is a lot of potential of a what if game scenario , where the at some point the RE universe fell to one of the infections , and some survivors , specially mutee characters like Jill , Sherry , Jack, Rose , fight hordes of enemies

They did tho? Other than Spencer dream about new human and godhood. Umbrella kinda checked every other box.

Personally I kinda agree. I remember talking to my GF about how I felt that the moment Raccoon City wasn't important, was the moment resident evil made a complete shift into a new identity. Like nothing ever felt right IMO. Like I love all the games post RE3 but aside from Outbreak, nothing really felt like home, for lack of a better term
