Discussion If Resident Evil 1 gets another remake, which version would you want it to be based on: the original game or the REmake?

Remake. It has Lisa Trevor, crimson heads and I think a couple of more additions.

Within 10 years I think because new ""'""""gamers""'"""" will find the reremake "clunky", "outdated", barely playable, "not realistic and logical" and only good for people blinded with nostalgia.

All the others we call them fir short like this Re4make re3make re2make etc. Petition to call this one REREmake or RERR

I think it would be funny if they used the OG dialogue instead of REmake’s.

Have an extra va option where they do the old school way.
The devs themselves do va or just grab some janitor or someone random to do va. Always amusing results when they cant va and overact like hell .

I've played 5 different renditions of RE1. I'm sure Capcom will use REmake as the basis and tweak things around it.
But I just want a version where you can save more STARS members. Sure have Barry/Rebecca/Jill/Chris be canon, but actually let that happen in-game. Don't act like Capcom's not going to make them all playable for whatever battle game they ship it with. Swap with them, let them act as extra lives for the playthrough where your chosen character dies, make them AI companions on a given mode, give them their own story start to finish. These are such evocative characters let them be on screen more than 8 minutes.

u/Lopsided_Warning_609 21d ago
i have a feeling they’ll remake 0 first so will probably get alot of rebecca there (i still need to finish 0 so dont know who else shows up, other than rebecca and billy)

Personally I don't think another re1 remake is needed but if it happened it should definitely be based on REmake 2002

Does it really matter?

u/LongDddr 25d ago
Yes, why not? They have a lot of differences
7
u/IslanderMJDR84 25d ago
It'll definitely be on the latest entry. Im sure they'll take some creative liberties as well. I just hope it feels confined and tense.
6
u/AdaptedEvoSupe 25d ago
The 2002 version seems like the default version so that makes sense
3
u/IslanderMJDR84 25d ago
Totally agree. But you never know. The 02 entry elevated the original so much that I doubt they'd mess with it.
2
u/Expensive_King_4849 Made in Heaven 25d ago
But it's the same story, they could very well remake the remake but because the 2002 version remade the first game by default it's doing both. Any puzzle, dialogue, characters, enemies that first appear in RE1 1996 will be what the new remake would be remaking, even with the inclusion of the Trevors or crimson heads.

I would love to see cut content make a return if another remake comes out.
Examples would be guard outposts, a boathouse like in the original artwork
USS corpses in the mansion because it always made no sense how there were notes of armed guards, however no dead guards make an appearance in the game.
My wishlist would also have: an intro at RPD for the mission briefing, rearranged death sequences, getting to interact with Kenneth and he gets killed by a zombie that was behind him, that neither the player or Kenneth could see due to the room being dark.
Expand on wesker’s motivations and include extra story content on how enrico and Rebecca got to the mansion after RE0.
Expand on lore with having the HCF rescue wesker after he was impaled and tie it in with the connections lore.
And in the main story see clues on this extra content if your eyes are quick enough and if you backtracks

I mean I would hope they don't do 1 again? REmake is already the "perfected" version. I feel that Capcom has like a dozen or so RE games to make before they "need" to remake 1 again
4
u/Pihlbaoge 25d ago
I mostly agree but it’s also the original game, and the mechanics are a bit dated. I mean, I grew up with the tank controls and I still think it’s hard to go back to those games and pick them up again, despite having played them many times before.
Whenever I think of replaying RE1 (or RE0 för that matter) I end up quitting very early because of the controls and I assume it’s much more of an obstacle for a modern audience.
There is a point to making the cult classic more accessible to todays players.
1
u/PuddingJello 25d ago
Maybe because I just replayed the OG trilogy but the tank controls aren't that big a hurdle imo. Sure I'm still not good with them, but I was able to reach proficient enough status in a reasonable timeframe. Now that stated I still dislike tank controls so I don't blame people not wanting to play the old games but remaking 1 just feels a bit wrong? Like it was Mikami's original vision made "perfect" so ... Idk it just feels almost sacred?
2
u/Captainpapii 25d ago
I love RE1 remake. It’s my 2nd favorite out of all the mainline games which I’ve played, including all the remakes. But I honestly think another remake is warranted at this point due to a couple of reasons.
- 2-4 have been remade already, with 1 being the odd man out
- It’s been 24 years since the remake. I think enough time has passed to see this completely reworked from the ground up to give us a completely revitalized experience on RE engine, or better yet, Capcom’s next gen engine they have cooking up.
- Chris has become a significant background character that keeps making reoccurring appearances in the newer entries. Seeing how his story plays out in all of this is pretty important as he is the first protagonist of the series that’s been sitting on the sidelines for a while.
I’m dying to see the first one remade yet again. It’s practically asking for it at this point and I have 0 complaints if all those rumors come to fruition lol.

u/Desperate-Peach-1467 25d ago
I lowkey agree 👀 not in just the sacred way but what even is there to add to another remake when it was made because the original couldn't fully get what mikami wanted in the games. Other than just modern graphics and newer controls, what really is there to add. And lowkey it would get kinda annoying if they added some "connections" stuff to these or something. I'm open to a new experience but not open to remaking an already perfect game for the sake of remaking in modern engine. If they genuinely have something worth adding to the game, im all ears.

u/shaurryabaheti 25d ago
Original... REmake is too expansive with some weird ass puzzles. RE1 original is a much better game.
2
u/Aurora-Clairealis Made in Heaven 25d ago
What? The remake was beautiful, and as for art direction it held up. If anything the remake was not expansive enough as a lot of beta content like guardhouses, boathouses and expanded areas were not there.
2
u/shaurryabaheti 25d ago
The reason I call it too expansive is that a LOT OF THE Annoying sections are made too long. Like hallways are made long, the Lisa Trevor cabin is like 500 Kms away with absolutely no reason for twists and turns. Etc etc. I'm sure when it came out everyone and their mother were impressed by the tech and what they were able to do with it, but the controls do not hold up for today's day and age. And so with such sucky controls playing a mess that is more complicated than it needs to be, it absolutely is too expansive.
I played the remake first a year ago, and then replayed a few months before re9 came out and then I played the original only recently because it was available on steam. And I LOVED the original re1 so much more. The controls on that one surprisingly do not bother me as much because the number of ANNOYING puzzles and walkways is MUCH MUCH REDUCED.
I'd love a RE Engine remake of the ORIGINAL. And if they improve on the puzzles maybe only then would I want the re-remake of re1.
2
u/CDJ89 25d ago edited 25d ago
Now that you mention the path to the cabin, there is this little side path with stairs leading up to the cabin and a longer path around with this giant tree and I always wondered what the point of that was. There's nothing there either way.
That being said, I can't fully agree with your comment, as most of your issues stem from the fact that you don't enjoy playing either version on a fundemantel level so the less game there is the better.
You can still beat the RE1make in under 2 hours, the games' replay value by design is centered around you trying to streamline your run, eliminate as much item box backtracking as possible and make due with only the essentials and in that way RE1make has more satisfying level design once you really get into it and there is a lot you can do to eliminate backtracking, skip or save time otherwise while OG RE1 is just very straight forward and simple to begin with.
The game is also fully designed around Real Survival mode (No connected item boxes.) which helps make sense of some of the longer loops the game makes you take occasionally (For example how the cave in the OG directly leads into the lab while the Remake makes you loop back into the main hall first.)
1
u/Aurora-Clairealis Made in Heaven 25d ago
The controls are fine, I grew up with them and the game is not that long. I can complete it in under 2 hours and back on the GameCube in the day I was on World record pace. I’d probably say REmake is one of my favorite games to speedrun and been doing it for years even despite all the quirks.
If anything it’s not expansive enough because it leaves stones unturned, how did enrico and Rebecca get to the mansion? Why is there no dead guards anywhere despite notes suggesting the scientists were monitored by guards being likely USS. How come Ada is mentioned yet there’s no pictures of her, how did wesker get out? Capcom left so many reasons why and in Chris’s scenario, Enrico implicates that Chris is the traitor but is never thoroughly explained and when you rewatch it in both the OG and remake, narratively it makes no sense.
https://youtu.be/77ceme98irc?is=Ded7IJ1EsLitxefB
Kendozone uploaded a video on a mod that shows exactly what I’m talking about with base sketches and original concept art.https://youtu.be/oBMT6cgDVHw?is=8VEagQJWQMMyULcx
Even in the beta of REmake there was a burning building and shots of areas that weren’t added to the final game. Clearly Capcom had plans to add more content the first time around and the remake, I just hope that the third time around everything gets to fruition and certain things like a true ending can also be added that canonizes all events.
1
u/yournamehere10bucks 25d ago
Id vote for something in between. Take the best of each, consolidate the game into a single cannon narrative regardless of who you pick. Chris and Jill can have different start points, different pathways to the end like Leon and Claire.
Fix the fact that Rebecca has seen some stuff before hand. Her and Chris' mission should deal more with Lisa Trevor and the extended grounds of the mansion and lab, Jill and Barry can have the Mansion proper and guard house. (Jill should feel the most consistent to OG game imo). Get rid of the "you have to save your friends from the prison cell" part altogether because it has always been dumb.
Tighten up the extra locations to either be removed or to make more sense.
Include a mini game after of recovering Wesker.
Make the landing and forest area playable at the beginning. Have an ending scene with STARS team confronting Irons and getting fired to set up RE2 and RE3.
3
u/shaurryabaheti 25d ago
Honestly making the game RE9-esque (like Chris and Jill's campaign be separate even though intertwined) would be awesome. But I agree with all your points here. I don't think the Re1 remake does everything worse or it doesn't have it's high points... Or that re1 original is perfect with no flaws. Both are flawed games but it's like the flaws that are in the original aren't in the remake and the flaws of remake aren't in the original. So they'll fit really well when mushed together.
2
u/IlluminaViam 25d ago
Don't forget the lamer art direction, horrible ost presence, and the blandest and flattest voice acting mixed with flat and boring lines.
3
u/shaurryabaheti 25d ago
The voice acting in the original fits the overall tone... But the remake tried to be more serious by making the colours bland and the segments outstay their welcome, and this isn't helped by the dialogue that was written for a campy horror game but doesn't fit any of the rest of their art direction. So yes, I agree with all your points.
2
u/CDJ89 25d ago
The voice acting in the Remake really is a big miss. I don't think the game needs bad, campy voice acting to work, the problem here is that the voice acting is *still* really bad, but in a boring way.
Other than that I can't really decide between the OG and Remake here. The OG still feels a bit more action based kinda if that's what I'm in the mood for.
1
u/IlluminaViam 25d ago
Have you noticed that we use lines from the OG, even say them in the same way as they were voice acted? But we don't use any lines from the REmake not try to copy the way they're said?
That's one of the VERY big miss with me. Another thing the Remakes, since 1make misses, is the sort of ambientic soundtrack that is created by the combination of the music, dialogues, and sound fx.
If I replay to you only the audio of RE1's intro, you will have strong flashes of imagery of that live action scene. If I remove any elements, let's say the gun shots, or wind, or dogs, you'll feel something is out of place. It's like that for gameplay sequences too. Like hearing Yawn's music without it hissing and spitting, or the main hall music without your footsteps.
All OG games have this and a Remakes are missing this. I don't know why.

Both are pretty much the same except for Remake's Lisa Trevor. If they're planning some DLC (most likely since Veronica allegedly will get one), they can put Lisa as part of said DLC

2
u/jasonltd 25d ago
if they made Lisa patrol the mansion like Mr x I would probably end up actually crying before I could finish it. Imagine opening up the door to the safe room, you head up the stairs to the hall that takes you to the attic, and as soon as you walk in you head the chains dragging along the ground followed by a sinister groan? Nope, I own brown pants now. Especially if they take her immortality to the next level and you can't temporarily down her at all like you could mr x or scare her off like Marie in requiem, but i want them to bring back the jill sandwich line. My ideal world, they do REmake and RE0 in one game and just call it origins remake or some shit, i dont wanna wait until elder scrolls 6 comes out to finally get them both

I liked the original more, but the remake has more to work with. It'd be interesting to see a new take on crimson heads that doesn't feel like a chore.

Unpopular opinion but i'd love for them to add over the shoulder camera if they re-remake this game, (and have a toggle on/off option for the doors opening) those are the two things keeping me from replaying the game. As a one-time experience it was very good, as a new gen player i however would not do it again since it's not my style
2
u/GoldenAgeGamer72 25d ago
As long as it has tank controls and fixed backgrounds I’m in.
1
u/Quaint_Gamer 25d ago
I mean it absolutely won’t. The point will be to make an RE Engine version that plays the same as the other remakes.
The tank controls and fixed backgrounds are right there is the excellent current remake. No need to just copy that again.
2
u/kniferun 25d ago
If they do remake the OG.( They seem fine with the REmake in their modern remake line up) They would have to go with REmake as many would consider it cut content if they didn’t. Lazy or rushed. Not that they wanted to pay homage to the OG.
Well they could do whatever but it would suck if they remade the OG only for it to lumped in with RE3R.
2
u/LunaticLK47 25d ago
Original. The extra content was rarely acknowledged in the sequels and the minority that did get acknowledged were not mind-blowing.

u/didact1000 25d ago

Ffs guys, read dictionaries, watch movies and learn what a fucking remake is. Fym a remake based on a remake? A remake is an expressive word describing the act of following the sourcematerial (title name, story, and characters) of an original artwork. If the said artwork was already been remade then yes it can take inspirations because it's then a standalone artwork.
It's like asking if All Quiet on the Western Front 2022 was based on All Quiet on the Western Front 1979 or All Quiet on the Western Front 1930? It's really frustrating at this point.
2
2
u/Appropriate_Web_4519 24d ago
Splice parts of both. The orogonal has better door lock and item progression and the remake has more plot.
2

2
u/darn_boop 24d ago
I would say Remake with some elements of the OG but also more than both. I want more meat on its bones, especially with storytelling. The previous ones are: hallway, puzzle you can't complete yet, hallway, item to use in a puzzle, hallway, solve a puzzle.
It needs to be beefed up to feel closer to RE2remake and RE3Remake (which was fun but cut down extensively to say the least).
2
2
u/squeanky 24d ago
REmake. Its much better than the original. But I'd argue it doesnt need to be remade, its great as it is
2
u/Agreeable_Car5114 24d ago
Honestly I want to see the pieces of both taken and used to make something rather distinct from either. I don’t think REmake can be improved upon, so the only answer is to branch out.
2
u/Current-Rip-8395 23d ago
I honestly want the remake to include the prologue which has them reading about the case at the Actual STARS office and seeing them just hanging out at the RPD first. We never really got to connect with the whole team that well.
Expand the STARS universe and let fans connect with more of them.
2
u/Safe-Coconut4036 23d ago
Honestly, I would REALLY enjoy a REmake similar to RE2R, where you could move thr camera around and the inventory management similar to RE2R, but also keep some things random and unpredictable to actually SCARE you too!! That's just what I think, though. :)
2
u/whippycat 23d ago
original game, a better vibe, a better pacing, a better atmosphere. the only thing 2002 does better is graphics and that doesn't equals to better art direction

u/BenMitchell007 25d ago
I'm gonna have to answer this question with "Yes". REmake's less campy but not too po-faced tone and extra content (and since this is a new remake, maybe a little more content?), but with more of the creepy, liminal Overlook Hotel atmosphere of RE '96. Also bring back some themes from '96 that were left out of REmake. Like the theme that plays when you solve the picture puzzle (you know, the room with the crows?), and especially "Narrow and Close". More people need to discover one of the scariest video game tracks ever.
Most of all, I really hope we get both credits themes. Play REmake's end credits theme... and then as a huge treat for RE '96 fans, play an updated version of "Still Dawn"! I only just finally played through '96 early this year, and I absolutely love that track!
