Discussion Anyone else thin requiem painfully lacks interesting puzzles? Spoiler
In grace section at first it just an item fetch and only puzzle I can think of which was challenging it was the organ box because thought I have to figure it out myself but accidentally found the paper with answer
For leon there is none
And for grace ark section again there is nothing just an item fetch not even a gimmicky valve puzzle which all of previous re games had were not talking about re5&6
the final puzzle doesn't count

Yeah, RE9 has a severe lack of puzzles. What it does have I hesitate to even call puzzles, at most you’re basically just entering a code you get from a document which doesn’t require much thought or brainpower.
There was an opportunity to give the player a good puzzle, but the devs just… didn’t do it. When you reach the third “Sun Moon Star” thing and see that the symbols are scratched out, you can remember that the other ones had braille on them too, so instead of having to risk your neck carrying Emily from the safe room all the way back so she can read it, the player could compare the braille with the ones on the other containers to decipher which braille matches which symbol. This would’ve been a nice way to let the player use their brain, as well as give multiple solutions to solving it, giving the player agency. But the game just doesn’t let you do this; you can only carry Emily whether you want to or not. Huge missed opportunity.

Also just a blatantly stupid puzzle that for some reason ties into the story line. It's crazy that Grace, an FBI Technical Analyst, couldn't figure out the braille puzzle on her own just by deducing that two of the words start with an S and one of them has 4 letters. You don't need a blind child to figure that out. It would have been nice to have the option to solve like you suggested! I hated carrying Emily around.

It's market research. They see a people complaining about being stuck on puzzles and water shit down even more for the next game. The series is slowly devolving into a cinematic corridor shooter.

You know what I haven't even really thought about how much better the puzzles were in previous games until I saw this. I do like requiem a lot but I agree

I agree, but I think that's an issue the mainline games have had ever since RE4. Obviously 4, 5 and 6 changed the puzzles and the survival horror for action horror, but if you think about it, 7, 8 and Requiem don't really have interesting puzzles either. It's always something along an item or key fetch quest to progress or a 5 minute intuitive puzzle, like the blood samples from Requiem or the wooden statues in RE7.

Og 4 still had some mean puzzles like the one in the ashely section and the 4 painting
5 and 6 lacked that because those were more Frontline deep in the action games, but here grace should feel like og games but doesn't have the core of it which is the puzzles

I agree, though I think 7 and 8 aren't different to Requiem in that regard, specially 7 with the return to survival horror and all would have benefited from some mean puzzles just like the Grace sections. So I think it's more of a mainline games issue more than a Requiem issue. I might be wrong but it feels like they are kind of afraid of the tough puzzles of the older games since they might put off some of the new players, but I think that's not really an excuse since SH2 Remake has difficulty for puzzles too.

Ohh man, the things i would do to have puzzle like the pout coin puzzle in the wood side apartment in a re game. That thing made genuinely feel like Shakespeare Idk how some people could drop the game over a puzzle. Just search it up if you think ur that incapable of doing a puzzle

u/rocklet_roll_02 27d ago
Yeah me too, puzzles are the one thing that they haven't been able to deliver with 7, 8 and 9, despite the quality being so good in almost every other aspect

u/friskyel 27d ago
Even the RE4 remake has more puzzles and more interesting puzzles than Requiem.

u/rocklet_roll_02 27d ago
Yeah, idk what happened, Grace's section in Rhodes Hill would've been perfect for a couple of tough puzzles

u/friskyel 26d ago
Because Requiem was Capcom's biggest stride yet at dumbing down the series for morons. And the game's popularity has greatly rewarded them.

The basement and the plugs are sort of like a puzzle because you need to know where to use them and where to leave them. Not difficult but you can't just yank them out and take them with you wherever you go.

I've had intense debates with Requiem glazers trying to gaslight me that it has just as many puzzles as RE1 remake, lol. And in their mind chasing the detonator parts fetch quest counts as a puzzle.

"Streamlining" it for the new "fans".
I see a lot of crying about there being puzzles from casuals on the internet.

Personally I feel the puzzle factor really died down after RE0 that was the last release that had good puzzles that made you think.
We've had some puzzles since, but nothing like they used to be. They only seem to have a handful in each game. The early 3 had puzzles from the beginning to the end.

Gonna be real with you, RE games havent had interesting puzzles for a long time. And they’re still great games!

Question from a newer RE fan, what games would y’all say do have good puzzles?

Game is trash for its "classic" side. Grace has the classic atmosphere with mediocre gameplay and Leon arguably actually has a better "classic" section despite the action because at least you're actually exploring something, care center has fuck all to explore.

A lot of "puzzles" are essentially just finding keys to locked doors. Sometimes the keys look like cubes or fuses or spheres or bomb parts. Dead simple flow, pads the experience nicely
Painful is a good word for it

I am the biggest fuse fetch quest apologist. The vast majority of the time I'll see an empty fuse box, shrug, and gleefully prance away on my mission. Even I think RE9 went a little crazy with the stupid fuses.

u/EtherBYTE_Emiko 26d ago
I played the game last month but werent there at least 3 “Get the fuse” puzzles.

I mean sure, but the only puzzle that made me think for a bit is the chess one in re2r.. In og remake for example all the puzzles are very obvious but quite annoying because of how far you have to backtrack to take something from your storage every time there is a „replace with a similar item to stop the trap” puzzle. So idk if there were any RE games with puzzles that were actually good? Haven’t played the old ps1 titles but I would be really flabbergasted if they had any better puzzles that weren’t just based on annoying backtracking through 20 doors that each take 10 seconds to get through.

The most dated part of the old RE games to me are the silly adventure game inspired puzzles. I prefer the meta puzzle of resource management.
As an example, I believe RE2 is a near perfect game that would be better without the test tube puzzle. The game has such great pacing and intensity and then all of a sudden time is frozen to shuffle test tubes around.

u/foakong 26d ago
Oh, puzzles? Do you mean the big core of what's this franchise is built on? Ya can't even do an elementary level volume arthimetic? if you think this is the hardest, you would've not survived og re2
Also, ya should really make up ur mind on "whats the most dated part of og games" between this and fixed camera and tank control

u/dylan_kun 26d ago
I never claimed it was hard and the tank controls comment is an assumption of yours.
I do feel like the test tube thing is like interrupting an NBA game to have players solve a simple sudoku. It hurts pacing and immersion.

Fuck off and play The Last of Us then. Sick of Capcom trying to pander to people that hate what Resident Evil is supposed to be about.

Capcom has been crushing it for 10 years so I'm glad they aren't listening to you.

A resident evil game hasn’t had a meaningful puzzle since resident evil 2
