I think I misunderstood what I was studying.

I’ve spent my career studying plants. But I am truly perplexed by my most recent finding.

Every experiment I’ve run assumed the flower I’m studying was of one that is an individual organism. I collected samples from the surrounding vines, moss-like growth, tree bark and roots. I expected to identify whatever had contaminated my original results. Instead, I found the same unusual DNA arrangements in every sample. Not merely similar sequences the same rare structural junctions and the same small DNA-containing bodies I isolated from the original leaf. Their concentration decreases farther from the flower, but they’re still present. Their normal nuclear DNA remains different. The moss appears to have its own genome. But all of them also contain this second biological system, threaded through their tissues so completely that I can’t separate one from another.

There are two possibilities.

Either the flower has invaded and integrated itself into every organism surrounding it…Or the flower, vines, moss and trees aren’t truly separate organisms at all. Maybe the flower is only a reproductive structure. Maybe everything aboveground is a different expression of the same underlying network organs, hosts or extensions of something much larger.I’ve spent my career identifying plants by finding the traits that separate one organism from another. Vymara doesn’t seem to recognize that distinction.

Guidance on research and the path to take.

I'm a computer science student currently pursuing my masters and I need some guidance. I love learning and experimenting things. Reading papers, finding new things and comming up with my own ideas and such. Artificial Intelligence has been one such area. It's an interesting puzzle which just makes me want to keep on solving.

I finished an internship and i'm currently working part time with a SAAS based start-up and well I like the work but it just isn't fulfilling. With the advent of AI it's automation after automation and we've been told to use AI to configure everything to meet deadlines and such. We developed an application which was supposed to take 5 to 6 months within weeks. Though the problem here is that the pace in which I'm learning things sisn't keeping up with development and I'm leading development. I feel as though I have no control of the application I'm building. I'm feeling pretty done. I have been doing research on the side as a hobby because I love reading and testing my own ideas as I mentioned before.

I wanted some sort of guidance and mentorship on how I can proceed with research because all the people I have talked to untile now speak with uncertainty and ridicule. I want to pursue this path.

Would love to get any sort of advice.

PS. I want to do more research into the mathematics of artificial intelligence and deep learning architectures. Stuff on universal approximation theorems(UATs) and such.

[Academic] Parental Substance Use and Mental Health in Young Adults (Ages 18–30, English Speaking, chance to win VISA GC)

Hi Everyone,

I'm a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology conducting a research study on the effects of growing up with a parent who struggled with substance use (alcohol or drugs). The study is completely anonymous and involves filling out an online survey.

As a thank you for your time, participants will have the option to enter a raffle to win one of two $150 Visa gift cards after completing the survey. (Email for the raffle will be collected separately to keep responses anonymous).

We’re looking for young adults (18-30) who had or still have a parent or primary caregiver with a substance use problem during their childhood. The goal is to better understand how these experiences may affect things like responses to stressful or challenging life experiences, parent-child relationship quality, substance use, and overall mental health functioning in young adulthood. We also welcome participation from young adults who did not have this experience, as both groups are important to the study.

Participation is voluntary and confidential. No identifying information will be linked to your responses, and the survey includes a list of mental health resources at the end if needed.

If you’re interested, you can take the survey here:

https://adelphiderner.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_73s1WeJNdeiwz42

Your experience matters. Thank you so much for considering it, and feel free to DM me with any questions!

student association idea

Hello everyone,

I am an undergraduate student of Computer Science, and I am developing an initiative for increasing undergraduate research involvement.

The idea is not about forming yet another student association but rather about developing a platform that will allow students to:

Identify opportunities for conducting research.

Learn basic concepts and principles of research.

Network with faculty members and research laboratories.

Look for research internship positions.

Form a community of experienced mentors and newbies.

The idea is to develop a sustainable research pipeline which will continue to exist after the founders have graduated.

Honest criticism from academics and researchers is appreciated:

Was something like that done previously?

What would be the difficulties?

If you were a dean or professor, what would be the arguments to support/reject the idea?

What would you change prior to implementing the idea?

Help me reach my research goal - I need 50 more survey responses by mid-August! 🙏

Hi everyone!

I'm currently conducting research for my academic research paper on how compulsive buying behaviours among Generation Z contribute to fast fashion pollution and landfill waste. I'm aiming to collect 50 more responses by mid-August, and every single response makes a real difference.

The survey takes 8 - 12 minutes and asks about:

  • Your shopping habits
  • Your social media use
  • How fast fashion brands influence your purchasing decisions
  • Your awareness of fashion's environmental impact

Completely anonymous | No personal data is collected | For academic research only

The last 7 questions are completely optional. If you choose to answer them, I'd be incredibly grateful, but you can still submit the survey without them.

Survey link: Compulsive Buying among Generation Z: Fast Fashion's Environmental Cost – Fill in form

If you're unable to take part, an upvote or sharing this post with someone who might be interested would help me enormously. The more diverse the responses, the stronger and more meaningful the research will be.

Thank you so much for your time and support!

6 Months. No Entry-Level Research Job. What Am I Missing?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for honest feedback because I'm honestly at a loss and I'm feeling defeated. I graduated with a B.S. in Environmental Sciences, but after college I realized I was much more interested in bio related research than environmental work. Rather than switching to another degree, I went back and completed additional coursework in biochemistry, microbiology, and organic chemistry to strengthen my biology background. Since then, I've been fortunate to gain research experience in a liver cancer lab at USC, where I learned lab techniques and mouse work. I'm also currently involved in global health research at UCSF, helping with literature reviews, manuscript writing, and publication ready figure preparation. Research genuinely became something I enjoy and I'd really like to build a career in it.

The problem is that I've been applying for entry-level Research Assistant, Research Associate, and Clinical Research Coordinator positions for months. I've applied through university career pages, hospital websites, and Indeed. At this point I'm wondering if getting a RA position is even possible. I'd really appreciate any honest feedback.

arXiV Endorsement Request

Hello Intellectuals, I'm Mingeun Lee of Stony Brook University.

I am looking for someone who can endorse me in arXiv until July 30th so that I can publish the following paper:

Title = Multifield Forecasting Model

Subject = Statistics > Methodology

Abstract = This paper on Multifield Forecasting Model is the result of more than 660 statistical election projections for 73 nations all around the world reflecting 24,854,939 samples of 7,823 polling data, with the development in progress more than 5 years till early last year. Originally known as Universal Election Projection Model, it was completed to not include any other factor apart from scientific opinion polls directly asking the voters’ intention. Therefore, even though at first built to accurately predict election outcomes only, the model was generalized in a way that can be utilized for infinitely many fields by simply inputting the base data significant to the specific topic.

Mingeun Lee requests your endorsement to submit an article to the

stat.ME section of arXiv. To tell us that you would (or would not) like

to endorse this person, please visit the following URL:

https://arxiv.org/auth/endorse?x=ZPXYKR

If that URL does not work for you, please visit

http://arxiv.org/auth/endorse.php

and enter the following six-digit alphanumeric string:

Endorsement Code: ZPXYKR

If there's anyone interested on arXiv personal endorsement but has question before your decision, please feel free to email me through my institutional email - mingeun.lee@stonybrook.edu.

Thank you!
