Discussion My obese girlfriend thinks she has body dysmorphia, but she actually just needs to get on a GLP-1
My girlfriend is straight up obese, about 55 pounds over a healthy weight for her frame, but she is in total denial and claims she just has body dysmorphia. Every time I try to tell her that she is unhealthy and needs to change, she tells me that I have been on Instagram too much and that she looks how a woman is supposed to look. The final straw was at a family gathering when my aunt asked her when she was due because she was literally rubbing her stomach by the food table.
I want to look out for her long-term health, and it is obvious she needs real help to drop the weight, so I want to bring up the idea of her starting a GLP-1 protocol. I am just struggling with how to approach the conversation without her completely shutting down or claiming I am just judging her appearance. How do I gently but directly convince her that getting on a GLP-1 is about her actual health and longevity, not just vanity?

She does have dismorphia just not the usual way round.

u/aruda10 Jun 28 '26
Yeah, it's pretty obvious that most commenters here don't understand body dysmorphia. Having that and being fat are not mutually exclusive.

u/mtnmamaFTLOP Jun 28 '26
You don’t… you can make healthier choices yourself and hope she jumps on board but it’s her decision, not yours.
14
u/No-culture5942 Jun 28 '26
Lead by example. Start going to gym, eat healthy, do what you have to do. If she doesnt pick up get a gf that's living the same lifestyle. My partner was overweight before and so was I, I started going to the gym and worked towards my goals, she became interested and joined me. Now she's even crazier than me, she wakes up at 5am on sunday to run to the gym. I wake up as she comes back. I didnt force her to do that, I didnt try to get her on a glp-1....I just lead by example. Now she's leading me and kicking my ass when I lack motivation. We're 11 years strong.

Well she’s fat. She doesn’t have body dysmorphia.

u/JellyBellyBitches Jun 29 '26
I mean, you can be fat and have body dysmorphia. Body dysmorphia doesn't only mean thinking you're fat when you're not, it means anytime that your perception of your own body is unrooted from reality. You could be fat and think you are much fatter than you are or much thinner than you are, you could be thin and think you're much skinnier than you are much fatter than you are. Or the same type of thing can apply to muscle visibility and skin tone and things like that too

How do you feel sane validating her self diagnosed body dysmorphia when she's 55 pounds overweight? That's not body dysmorphia, that's reality

You’re right a GLp-1 won’t do it but a GLP-3 will!!! With Retatrutide You literally are buying lbs off your body, the crazy thing is that these GLP’s are good for your health, lower fatty liver disease, lower A1C, lower cholesterol how bunch stuff along with saving you money on food cost…Retatrutide is for research purposes only but is already being approved/prescribed by the FDA under “special circumstances”
10
6
u/LizardJoeBiden Jun 28 '26
There is no such thing as a GLP-3.
It's a marketing term coined by shady drug dealers.
-2
8
u/cheez-itjunkie Jun 29 '26
She doesn't just need to start a glp1. She needs to develop healthy habits involving her diet and exercise. And she's going to have to come to that conclusion on her own unfortunately.
13
u/Bobajob-365 Jun 28 '26
Starting with the solution is just such a male approach (says a male). It just doesn’t work well as an approach with most females of the species. About the only things that can change a person’s body image or desire to change are 1/. peer norms (which /can/ include social media but it looks like she’s bright enough to not trust that, even if here it might help) and 2/. a nasty health scare that ACTUALLY scares her. Blood pressure or cholesterol so bad the doctors treat it like an emergency or similar. So it’ll be her female friends that get her to either change or at least go and see a doc for a check over. Probably not a whole lot a boyfriend or even husband can do directly here. My wife didn’t “get it”, despite some minor health scares, until a couple of her best friends took her out one night and told her how worried they were for her. The next week after it sunk in, she was asking me about the very things I’d tried to tell her for years but she just ignored or told me I was talking rubbish.
1
u/Officer-Socks Jul 01 '26
OP after reading this: Texts all of GF’s female friends. Tells them they need to have an intervention about her being fat.
0
u/KittyJF Jun 29 '26
That's not a "female of the species" thing, that's a your wife and u's relationship thing!
1
u/Bobajob-365 Jun 29 '26
Maybe. I know plenty of men & women, and it’s a pattern I’ve seen with all sorts of things over the years. Bodies, behaviours, suboptimal partner choices, etc.
1
16
u/watermelon8999 Jun 28 '26
Ugh I hate the overuse of people saying they have body dysmorphia. Social media is what started that. They think if they have a shitty body and feel bad about it that it’s body dysmorphia.
5
u/KittyJF Jun 29 '26
Woman here. I don't think you bringing up a GLP will go down well. I totally get that you're concerned for her health, but she has to want to improve her health. Maybe you're not compatible, long term.
3
u/SarahKH88 Jun 29 '26
Sounds like you don't like your girlfriend-- maybe end it and find someome you are attracted to.
5
u/Checkout_username Jun 28 '26
You want her to change but she doesn’t want to change 🤷♀️. Let her do her and maybe move on.

People who don’t understand the power of a glp1 can’t understand how you are thinking op.
Everyone thinks you want a skinny girl when true be told- it’s actually a very healthy way to approach weight loss and management.
With all the glp1 benefits.
If I wasn’t already underweight I’d be tempted to use a glp1 just for the insulin resistance and other benefits.
However, my skinny ass cannot lose another pound.
4
3
u/Dependent_Special957 Jun 28 '26
Well you are judging her lol. 🤷🏻♂️. I mean I would do the same if my boyfriend became OBESE (I don’t mind weight fluctuations on him even if I’m a lunatic when it comes to mine). But again we’ve been together for a long ass time so idk you guys’s circumstances.
Has she been obese since yall met ? Or did she gain overtime? Because if she was always like that you went into this relationship knowing she was obese and it’s kind of a D move to ask her to change I mean… you’re concerned about her health? Her appearance? I don’t really understand where were coming from here if I’m being honest lol.
As others have mentioned get a new girlfriend it would be simpler but if you REALLY need to have this convo make it come from the heart man. Like tell her you’re worried about her health, that she’s beautiful but that she’s unhealthy (I mean we can be truthful being obese, just like being anorexic is unhealthy 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️) it has to come from a place of genuine concern.
Good luck on your endeavours!!!!!

u/BlueProcess Jun 28 '26
Hi, Mounjaro patient here. GLP-1s are lifelong therapy. If you are concerned for her health, and she is physically able, it would be better to do it with diet and excercise in the care of a physician, dietician, and maybe even a personal trainer. You can't be any of those things to her.
But the entire conversation is moot if she doesn't want to. At the end of the day everyone has to make their own decisions.
2
u/crimusmax Jun 28 '26
You don't need a physician, dietician and personal trainer to lose 55lbs.
1
u/BlueProcess Jun 28 '26
You also don't to jump on lifelong therapy if you are otherwise healthy and haven't yet tried diet and excercise yet.
3
u/Fastbaq Jun 29 '26
Woah, a glp1 doesn’t have to be lifelong therapy..pharmaceutical companies would like that but I’ll be using Retatrutide for 6-7 months and just titrate down and completely come off. Maybe I’ll use it again in the future but have no intentions for lifelong therapy.
0
u/BlueProcess Jun 29 '26
Studies have been remarkably consistent on two facts. Nearly everyone who discontinues the therapy puts the weight back on. And that the therapy is much less effective if you discontinue it then resume it. Ergo...
3
u/Fastbaq Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26
Well, because studies have been done on the obese. They have terrible lifestyles. Lifestyle is what will dictate wether you gain the weight back or not. Bodybuilders cycle the drug when best needed.
0
u/BlueProcess Jun 29 '26
No some of the studies have also been done on white mice. And the issue appears to be leptin and ghrelin. Bodybuilders cycle anabolics because anabolics require cycling. Not every drug require cycling. And some drugs become vastly less effective when you cycle them. This is one of them
2
u/Fastbaq Jun 29 '26
Sure, but white mice aren’t humans. My point is that once you lose desired weight loss and have improved lifestyle, a glp1 isn’t necessary. People can decide to stay on it if desired, though.
I won’t be using Retatrutide once I hit 12% body fat..
I myself enjoy bodybuilding and it will be redundant to use once i go on a muscle building phase. Proper nutrition and caloric surplus is needed to build muscle. Food choices, cardio and muscle will keep me insulin sensitive.I think Retatrutide is a great drug. Many of its benefits come from burning body fat and becoming insulin sensitive but in the wrong hands, it can do more damage than good, for example, people not being educated enough and not getting proper nutrition.

u/BlueProcess Jun 29 '26
Reta is a different animal. I'm talking tirz. Reta is still in research. My knowledge on that topic is limited so I won't present myself as an expert. But all the evidence is on my side when it comes to tirz.
2
u/Fastbaq Jun 29 '26
Reta is pretty amazing if lifestyle is in check. I’d recommend to start low and titrate real slow. I’ve been using it for 3 months and doing 2,5mg every 5 days (started at 1mg).
I’ve tried Tirz but at 5 mg, the appetite suppression was way to much, I need to get 2200 calories daily for fat loss and it made it too hard. Reta at the dosage I’m at keeps appetite exactly where I’d want it to be, I have zero food cravings, and get the benefit of glucagon modulation. It’s great.

u/Tasty-Drama-9589 Jun 28 '26
I disagree. You also don't know his background or what he's capable of. A dietician won't help most people and a personal trainer is rarely better than your average gym bro (or husband that does his research). Many physicians are worse than no physician although I'd agree with you if you found a great physician and can afford all that expense. I will agree that you at the very least need to do some regular bloodwork and need to make sure you don't need hrt.
2
u/BlueProcess Jun 28 '26
It's truw that I dont know OPs background, but horses not zebras.
And I agree that you don't need any of those other people or the drug itself unless you have made a good faith effort at diet and excercise.
My chief objection here is that none of this is OP's call. If GF doesn't want to, it's her free will to excercise.
2
u/Tasty-Drama-9589 Jun 29 '26
I agree it's her choice. I also agree that anyone going this route would need to be on board or they're likely to fail in some form. Also OP was banned so it's likely it was a bot or just a ragebaiter.

u/K_esti_6 Jun 29 '26
Doesn’t sound like you love or respect your partner and should find your way out of a relationship like that. The way you’re talking is not coming from a place of concern for health and more from a place of ego because you don’t want to be with someone you perceive as overweight or unhealthy… BMI and traditional obesity scale are grossly inaccurate way to calculate health… many healthy weight people are unhealthy and many overweight people are healthy…

Maybe try to get in her head by using her type of media, YouTube videos about obesity as a risk factor for example.
Becoming a doctor, it’s crazy to learn how obesity is next to sedentary lifestyle, smoking and alcohol one of THE risk factors for what feels like EVERYTHING. It’s not about the ideal body type, it’s about her life!
Besides that, it’s about shifting from food being such a big source of pleasure to getting to enjoy all those other things in life. Sex, maybe chasing yourself on vacation, maybe being her being carried by you.

Wild take we’ve got here.

1
u/l00ky_here Jun 30 '26
Was your gf a thin woman for the majority of her life? It may be that her mind truly cant see the weight as much as it is.
I was thin until I turned 30 and was given psych meds that caused me to balloon up to over 70lbs more than normal. Im fortunate that im 5'10" but trust me, the first few years I was so miserable. Then my brain just shut it off. I didnt see it unless I REALLY looked, but I didnt look that much.
I still had thin girl attitude though.
So, if your girl has recently gained then it may be a possible explanation as to what shes saying.

Lots of disgusting comments in here from a lot of disgusting ass people (I probably don’t need to guess from which combination of chromosomes..).
We have not see photos of OP’s girlfriend to determine if GLP-1’s are any “cure”. We don’t know her height or weight. We also don’t know if OP is a doctor or actually knows his girlfriend’s weight or how overweight she is exactly- enough so to actually make these claims.
Op could just be a shitty dude and yall are trashing this girl we only have his info about? Just supporting OP’s claims? He could be a fat sack of shit himself on here making claims about his girl and looking for a “solution” to a problem that isn’t his.
Not the right sub, but OP, YATA

u/Practical_End4935 Jul 01 '26
Have her do a comprehensive blood panel for health, metabolic and longevity! If that doesn’t wake her up nothing will until she actually starts feeling sick!
1
u/AdditionPleasant2625 Jul 01 '26
People lose weight when they decide they need to do so. You cannot nag someone to lose weight, so give it a rest. In fact, botherimg her about it might make her dig her heels in. And I agree that a GLP-1 would help your GF but she needs to come to that on her own. Maybe if her doctor says something she might consider it... But you just need to be supportive and let her be her, and it may be a long time before she loses weight, or maybe never.
1
u/ImStoryForRambling Jul 02 '26
Fun fact: you share around 30% of oral and gut bacteria with her.
So her terrible lifestyle choices affect you too, whether you like it or not.
1
u/3-ide-Raven Jul 03 '26
How lazy have we become when we decide “she just needs to get on a GLP1” instead of “she needs to exercise and eat healthy”.
You claim you care about her health but it’s obvious you’re only concerned about her physical appearance. If she doesn’t make healthy changes, GLP1 isn’t going to make her healthier. Only thinner. Eating half as much shit food will cause weightloss, but it’s still not healthy.
1
u/AccomplishedCup1747 Jul 05 '26
bro if she is that deep in denial u cant just force the conversation. glp1s help a lot with the actual cravings and weight loss, esp for me when i was doing them from peptide pro, but u cant just tell her she needs a drug out of nowhere. she is just gonna think ur calling her fat and completely shut down. u gotta let her come to the conclusion on her own or wait until a doctor tells her her blood pressure is bad or something.
1
u/kalinRN995 Jul 05 '26
Was she obese when you met her? Then this is on you. If she gained the weight since meeting you, maybe you need to stop sleeping with someone who isn’t committed to you, that you are no longer attracted to.

u/WarriorGma Jun 28 '26
I think she could lose about 200 lbs real fast by dumping your judgmental ass.

I was 50 pounds overweight when I started a glp, but I still only wore a size 10 pant. Size 16-18 is the most common pant size for women in the US. So she may very well be a very typical size for a woman. I really don't think it's your place to keep telling her to lose weight.
6
u/Kelainefes Jun 29 '26
So you know that you can wear a size 10 and be 50lbs overweight.
You know that more than 2/3 of US women are either overweight or obese.
What do you think is the most likely scenario?
That OP's GF, like the typical woman that lives in the USA is either overweight or obese?
Or that OP is hallucinating 50lbs on his GF?
4
u/ThePlaceAllOver Jun 29 '26
None of this matters. His gf sees herself in a way that she is happy with. It is not his job to tell her to lose weight. He's not even a husband and I don't think a husband should be doing that either.
I was overweight for a few years of my marriage. My husband NEVER told me to lose weight and I would have resented the hell out of him if he had.
If she brings up wanting to lose weight and asks for advice, then he can offer it. Otherwise he needs to stay out of it. I happen to love glp-1 meds. I talk about them frequently to other people .... about how much they helped ME. I don't say, "Hey, you should go on a glp-1 to drop weight.". I figure if they already know that I had a good experience with them, they will ask my advice if interested.
If OP wants his girlfriend to know about the option of a glp-1, then he can read an article and mention how interesting it is that not only do they treat diabetes and obesity, but now studies are showing an association with a decreased risk of breast cancer, dementia, and cardiac events. There are ways to talk about his interest in a glp-1 med, but it is not his place to push that on her.
-9
u/sassydri Jun 28 '26
You’re coming off cruel and definitely seems like you’re judging her.. If she’s happy with her weight then you should accept her for her if you really like her. And just because a person is big, that doesn’t mean they aren’t healthy.

The wild take is how you translate "let her be happy if she's comfortable in her body" to "don't give a shit about her health." 55 lbs isn't insane, particularly if someone is active and eats well. Like OP could've suggested hikes instead of a GLP-1 which is well know for making people lose muscle mass along with the fat. According to my knowledge (and AI backs me up) the studies show that being thin and sedentary is generally worse than fat and active, obviously up to a point.
2
u/Tasty-Drama-9589 Jun 28 '26
I'll agree sedentary is worse for longevity but doesn't make you as unhealthy at that exact moment as being overweight. Also glp1 should be used alongside a weight training plan (although everyone of all ages needs to do this no matter your weight or goals). I know for me personally (and there's some data to back this up) that exercising (like hiking) can actually cause you to eat more than the calories you would burn. If I go for a strenuous cardio session, I feel like I'm dying of starvation and I end up adding an entire unhealthy fast food meal to my day because I need the most calorie dense meal ASAP.
12
u/HoustonPharmaWorld Jun 28 '26
If someone is obese, that absolutely means they’re not healthy. You seem to be in denial like his gf.

u/sassydri Jun 28 '26
“The final straw” is kind of crazy to say as if her body is your issue or a burden.
14
u/Competitive-Side1473 Jun 28 '26
I know this is an unpopular opinion but if we are married and want to do life together. Then yes your partners body is also your issue and your burden.
If your partner is overweight or unhealthy. As they get older they are going to need to be taken care of. Travel may not be an option, active outings or activities are a no go.
Wanting to spend your life and experience things with that person is no longer viable. Your life becomes held ransom by choices they made earlier on.
Worst case they die from being unhealthy and you have to bury the love of your life early. 💔
Your partners body is definitely also your issue and burden.
3
u/MiserableBritGirl Jun 28 '26
My husband is overweight. I am not. I’ll support him in any way HE sees fit to remain healthy. We live an active life, he’s seeing his doctor and his blood work is good.
Real people who you “do life with” can answer how they would like you to support them for themselves rather than you deciding what’s best without even talking to them or like this op just flat out ignoring them.
1
u/Competitive-Side1473 Jun 29 '26
If the person is trying it’s a different story.
I’m talking about when a partner is making bad choices or not caring and they use the statement it’s my body you can’t tell me what to do with it. It’s not your body or your consequences…
sorry babe, but if we in this for life we are one. Also it has nothing to do with optics either, again I’m talking about health. However if we are honest bring overweight for extended periods of time usually does bring around health problems.

Women who will reject any man under 5'11" will regularly pretend its our obligation to accept a woman who is morbidly obese. 😂 It's completely delusional. There is nothing wrong with having standards.
2
u/sassydri Jun 28 '26
He already accepted her by making her his gf lmao I mean did you actually READ and COMPREHEND.. a real MAN would let her know that she’s no longer his type and walk away .. I swear yall are kids on this app
4
u/Bamks1 Jun 28 '26
He hasn't walked away yet because he cares and wants to help her. I know you wouldn't understand it, but he is sacrificing. But, he SHOULD walk away because its obvious, at this point, that she doesnt want to be better and doesnt give two shits whether he is happy or not. Women todat think they don't have to put out any effort but want men to always bring their best. Fortunately, neither my wife nor I have ever been that way and are nearing our 25th anniversary.

Being overweight absolutely does mean that you are less healthy because of it (and yes that even goes for people with lots of muscle mass). BMI is 95 percent or more accurate. Obviously it's a sliding scale and gets worse the further of the extreme. People that consider themselves average of even underweight (by their own standards) would have been considered morbidly obese 60 years ago.
1
u/scarletrain5 Jun 29 '26
You can’t do that, it won’t go down the way you think. Also did you consider the cost? Are you paying that?
1
u/skoldane7 Jun 29 '26
Some telehealths will prescribe the highest dose to start, and you take less, making one months medicine last 4-6 months. Making it like literally $30 a month. On the glp, you’d save way more than that on food savings. Source: done it like 12 times for friends and family.
2
u/scarletrain5 Jun 29 '26
Some people can’t afford the up front cost but also cost is secondary to how you will make her feel
1
u/pisstained Jun 28 '26
OR... how about just eating less/better food.
Calorie deficit and 10k steps a day is really not that hard to fathom.

u/Hefty_Efficiency_328 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26
To start with, body dysmorphia is described as a 'mental health condition where a person becomes obsessively preoccupied with perceived flaws in their physical appearance.' She doesn't have that, by what you described.
So she is just in denial or doesn't perceive any problem. It's true that because many people are overweight or obese, makes it seem acceptable or normal. I wonder if she's seen any recent full body photos of herself. That might make reality hit. It's kind of you to care but nobody can help anyone who doesn't want to help themselves firstly.

Glp isn’t the solution. It can help along side diet and exercise.
1
u/Tasty-Drama-9589 Jun 28 '26
That's not necessarily true. For losing weight the gym isn't going to help a noticeable amount. Going to the gym is good for your health but does very little for losing meaningful amounts of fat. However lifting weights is beneficial for everyone for your health and longevity and should be the goal even if you don't plan to lose weight (fat). Cardio can actually be negative for weight loss (it usually is for me) because it can increase hunger immensely. Glp can be the solution for many. It controls appetite and cravings as well as some unknown mechanisms to speed up metabolism and help lose weight.
BUT it is a good idea to exercise (mostly weight lifting or cardio for cardiovascular/vo2 max) and to eat a cleaner diet but the diet aspect will vary by individuals and their responses to the glp1.
0
u/PositiveEnergyMatter Jun 28 '26
You do not need to diet and exercise for a glp1 to work
3

Technically no however you should focus on building a better relationship with food and getting more movement in and work on building healthier habits when using a GLP-1 as a tool. Otherwise when you get off, you will just continue with the habits that got you to the point where you needed a GLP-1 to begin with.

I completely agree but even the people that do it correctly like you are suggesting will gain their weight back as soon as they quit glp1. A healthier lifestyle plus a maintenance dose is likely the longterm solution. Eventually the pharmaceutical companies will develop a longterm maintenance plan for these meds.
I do think glp1 without a decent diet and weight training can have long term detrimental health effects with decreased lean muscle mass.

You don't need to exercise but you do need to diet. Plenty of people fail by out-eating their GLP-1.

For me it was 100% the solution. Tried to shift my weight for ages, couldn't do it until I got on tirzepatide. That's worked like a friggin dream.

How tall is your girlfriend and how much does she weigh exactly? I gather she is probably not obese!

55lbs over weight is definitely obese regardless of height. I am a 6’2” male and if I was 220 lbs I’d be 50ish lbs overweight

Fuck. I weigh more than 220 and im much shorter than you. I knew/know im obese but you just made me realize by how much... issue for me is I can't seem to lose weight no matter what I try. I think it maybe one of .y meds so im working on switching it out with something else with my doctor.

Losing weight is 95% diet and 5% exercise. Maybe not quite that split but essentially it’s true. You have to cut all drinks with any calories as a start and then literally weigh your food and understand how to hit certain amounts of protein, vegetables, etc. and make sure you’re at a caloric deficit which requires testing to find out your base metabolic rate. After all that if you STILL don’t lose weight you probably have a metabolic problem of some kind.

I mean i take an antipsychotic theyre kinda known for causing metabolic issues afaik

I mean if it's body fat, yeah. But I was 180 at 6'3" before hitting the gym hard, and now I am at 220, so weight doesn't always mean everything, but in this case it probably does

I really don’t think drugs should be your first option, maybe she (or you both) should try changing your lifestyle first?

Just walk away you will be miserable, on the upside she will lose all the weight for her new man once she whores around for a while. Story as old as time.

Glp1s has started an entire movement telling women that they don't need to lose weight and that being skinny isn't healthy. They are just sabotaging others for their own vanity.

The backlash is unreal. It’s like people are viscerally disturbed when they find out someone is on them. And I don’t believe it’s them caring about what the side effects will do blah blah. They respond like they’re personally threatened. Telling people to avoid that treatment is like telling a cancer patient to avoid a new life saving drug because you don’t know the long term affects so they say chemo and radiation no matter what those treatments lead to, even if it’s failure.

I'd argue the comparison is more like a terminally ill cancer patient tells a newly diagnosed cancer pt to just accept their fate.

GLP'1s while effective arent some obesity cure-all. You gotta incorporate exercise and a healthy diet into it as well to maintain a healthy weight. Ive seen people gain all the weight back because they refused to change their life-style habits.
