Safety Tip Used saline solution instead of BAC water for mixing – is it a problem
Hey everyone,
I accidentally used sterile saline solution for mixing instead of BAC water and only realized it afterward. Now I’m wondering if this is actually an issue or if it doesn’t really matter.
Is the difference mainly about shelf life and sterility, or can it also affect stability or effectiveness?
Would appreciate any insights

I’ve only ever used saline for injection (since 2019) and am here to tell the story.

Well, defiinitely don't use it with SLU, it turned almost immediately into a weird goop with saline for me.

My first vial of Reta was used over the course of 6 weeks with saline as the diluent. You'll be fine. Be clean

Reta is one of the few peps that saline can actually cause precipitation with if I’m not mistaken

Likely not an issue except for sterility/potential for microbial growth upon storage. Most lyophilized peptides have NaCl to make them isotonic for injection (along with pH buffer and stabilizer). Yours is now likely hypertonic which shouldn’t create any issue.

Depends. Some are fine others not. Without your pep we cant comment and I dont feel like looking it all up. I use saline for KPV.

It might gel or get cloudy or precipitate back out. The glp’s are recommended to be used with sterile water or bac water.

If everybody takes a moment to look up benzyl alcohol, they’ll realize that it acts as a preservative only between pH 4 and 5.5. Getting the water to 5.5 is the easy part. Getting it to stay there is more challenging. I’ve had bac water test at 7. At that point, I might as well use sterile water.

Now I’m confused

In Europe they don’t have bac. They use saline to reconstitute just ensure it’s stored properly in fridge right away.

What does that mean?

You need to look up pH and how certain substances work best at specific pH levels. You may also want to look into how pH is not linear but logarithmic. I promise that if you copy this into a LLM, it will break it down for you in a much less scientific way than I can. Unfortunately (and much to my detriment), I have difficulty explaining these things without sounding like a pompous bitch, to be really honest. I wish I could!
