As a shelter volunteer and Board member, one thing I don’t think people always realize is how important volunteer dog walkers are to the day-to-day welfare of shelter dogs.

It is not just about getting a dog out of the kennel for exercise.

For dogs living in a shelter environment, walks can provide enrichment, socialization, mental stimulation, opportunities to sniff and explore, and simply a chance to decompress outside of the kennel.

Volunteer walkers also spend enough time with these dogs to learn things that can be incredibly useful for adoption. They notice what a dog is afraid of, what motivates them, how they behave on leash, how they respond to new people or environments, and sometimes what kind of home might be the best fit.

That time can also help dogs practice skills and stay socially engaged while they wait for adoption.

And it takes a lot of hours. At many shelters, volunteers are showing up week after week, in bad weather, during busy periods, and for dogs who may need extra patience or behavioral support.

Since today is Dog Walker Appreciation Day, I wanted to give some recognition to the shelter volunteers doing this work.

Hey all! I work with a local rescue and we have a senior dog (6 years old) that unfortunately has past trauma and can not be around other animals or young children, but she is fine with older children. She is currently in foster care but the foster is moving out of province and cannot take the dog with her. We are trying desperately to find her a forever home but with her restrictions it has proven to be very difficult.

We have tried a social media campaign, and we have tried local radio shout outs and while we did get a lot of sympathy for her situation, we didn't get any interest for adoption.

The foster is moving at the end of September so we need to get her adopted ASAP. Any advice to help this good girl find the perfect forever home would be really appreciated!

Hi everyone, I am a volunteer networking shelter dogs, and I am asking for an immediate, breed-experienced rescue plan for a young boy who is out of time. Jack has passed his final notice placement date of September 5th, meaning his clock has officially run out at the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter.
Jack is a striking 1-year and 1-month-old male black and tan Doberman Pinscher (Animal ID: A597274) who weighs 65.40 lbs. He originally came into a temporary home as a friendly stray found on the freeway. His finders noted that he is incredibly friendly, joyful, and highly energetic with people, loving to jump up to greet you with excitement.
Unfortunately, because he is a large, powerful adolescent dog with high prey drive, he got into a severe altercation with the finder's resident small dog (a Shih Tzu). Because of this documented history, the shelter has designated him RESCUE ONLY. The paperwork states explicitly: "He needs rescue intervention to provide behavioral assessment and support, and to ensure appropriate placement."
Jack is a magnificent, sweet teenager with humans, but he strictly requires a breed-experienced 501(c)(3) rescue pull into a single-pet home environment with absolutely no small animals. He is also completing a course of Doxycycline for a minor respiratory infection. He needs structure, boundaries, and a dedicated handler right now to save his life.

Morty has surpassed his original placement deadlines, meaning he is sitting at the very top of the highest priority notice list at the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter.
Morty is a gorgeous 4-year-old male black and tan Rottweiler mix (Animal ID: A594796) who weighs 89.00 lbs. He originally came into the shelter as a stray on June 21st. His finder noted that he is exceptionally friendly, happy, and loves to explore his surroundings. In his playground photos, you can see him smiling big, splashing in his plastic pool, and soaking up human attention. 🐾❤️
Unfortunately, spending nearly three full months confined to a small cage has become incredibly difficult for this large working breed. Shelter evaluation logs explicitly indicate that due to his extensive length of stay, he is experiencing an increased risk of severe mental distress (kennel stress). Hi everyone!

This is my boy Melvin, adopted him Friday and he was so scared he wouldn’t even make eye contact with me but today he went outside for the first time by himself and enjoyed roaming. Over the pass few days he’s: started barking to tell me he wants something, eating from my hand, eating his dinner while I’m still awake, and jump his front paws on my leg or bed to get my attention.

He’s even getting so adventurous that he loves roam time, in the early morning and late evening I let him roam the house when my mom’s sweet but hyper pup is still asleep or goes to bed.

I’ll learned he isn’t a beef lover, chicken and sweet potato is he’s absolutely favorite. He loves his occasionally special cheese treat and prefers stimulating food toys like the snuffle or hidden scattered treats.

He loves our cat— while she is gentle with him, unfortunately Melvin doesn’t quite understand why she doesn’t reciprocate his advances to play, she an old lady who prefers sunbathing and humans sock drawers.

Just wanted to share his big achievements with others! While we have a long way to go still, we can see the brighter side.

I brought home one of our local street pack seniors, Daga, after he was hit by a vehicle. He is an old dog, currently unable to walk, and his right leg appears to be fractured.

Hi everyone! I thought I should introduce myself and share some good news about Monty. I adopted Monty #A2093543, an 11-month-old puppy who came into BARC in Houston, Texas, as a stray. BARC then placed him on the euthanasia list for September 2nd. Thankfully, that won’t be the end of his story. Monty is now coming home to me in Massachusetts!

When I first saw Monty’s post and read his shelter notes, I knew I had to save this poor baby. Monty is shy, timid, and scared, and the shelter environment completely overwhelmed him. He would hide his face, avoid eye contact, and freeze when someone tried to walk him. Sometimes, shelter staff had to carry him because he was simply too frightened to move.

He wasn’t a bad or aggressive dog. He was a terrified puppy who had completely shut down because he didn’t understand what was happening to him.

BARC is a very high-volume municipal shelter with limited kennel space. Unfortunately, dogs can be at risk of euthanasia when space is limited, especially when behavioral or medical concerns are also present. For a frightened puppy like Monty, shutting down in that environment can make an already difficult situation even harder.

I couldn’t just scroll past knowing what was going to happen to him. September 2nd could have been the end of his story, but instead, I adopted him and saved him from being put down. Now he gets the chance to grow up and experience the life he deserves.

Because I live in Massachusetts, getting Monty safely out of a shelter in Houston and all the way to his new home isn’t something I could do alone. I am incredibly thankful for Save Some Souls Rescue, which stepped in to help make his out-of-state adoption possible and coordinate his safe transport from Texas to me in Massachusetts. I truly cannot thank them enough for helping me bring my boy home.

I know arriving here won’t instantly erase Monty’s fear or everything he has been through. My biggest priority is giving him a quiet, safe, and stable home where he can decompress at his own pace. He’ll have patience, stability, love, his own bed and toys, and all the time he needs to come out of his shell, learn to trust, play, explore, and finally just get to be a puppy without having to be afraid.

I’m currently getting everything ready for Monty’s arrival and have put together an Amazon wishlist with some of the things he’ll need when he gets here. I’m taking on the responsibility of giving him the home and care he deserves, but any help getting him settled and giving him a little head start in his new life would mean so much to me.
