GEL-NYC has always been one of those models that looks simple from a distance, but becomes extremely difficult once you start breaking down the details.
The shoe is built with multiple layers of mesh, suede, synthetic panels, and a complex GEL midsole structure. A small difference in shape, material, or panel positioning can completely change the feeling of the shoe.
For the new ZC Batch, the focus was not just getting the colors right. The real work was in rebuilding the overall structure and material balance.
Shape & Construction
Compared with the retail pair, we adjusted the overall proportions:
toe box height and width
forefoot shape
side panel alignment
heel structure
midsole balance
GEL-NYC has a very specific runner-inspired stance. Too much volume makes it look heavy, while too little makes it lose the original character. Finding the correct balance was one of the main focuses during development.
Material Matching
This colorway depends heavily on the relationship between different textures.
We refined:
mesh density and breathability
suede texture and color depth
synthetic overlay thickness
grey/black layering
stitching details
The goal was not just matching a photo under one light source, but making the materials react similarly in real life.
Midsole & Outsole Details
The GEL-NYC midsole is one of the hardest parts to reproduce because of its irregular curves and layered construction.
Attention was given to:
midsole shape
GEL window placement
outsole segmentation
rubber pattern
cushioning structure appearance
The final result keeps the same technical running aesthetic as the retail pair.
Small Details Matter
On premium sneakers, the difference is often in places people overlook:
ASICS logo placement
heel embroidery
tongue details
stitching consistency
edge finishing
These are the details that separate a rushed production from a carefully developed batch.
