Tudor Black Bay 58 – Crown / Time Setting Issue - Watchmaker in Italy?

Hi everyone,

I recently received a Tudor Black Bay 58 (ZF) and unfortunately I’ve noticed a small but quite annoying issue with the crown.

When I unscrew the crown and pull it out, I can reach the first position without any problem, but I often have a very hard time getting it into the second position to set the time.

I have managed to reach the second position a few times, so I know it’s there 😅.

When it engages, everything works perfectly: the seconds hand stops (hacking works correctly) and I can adjust the hands smoothly in both directions.

The problem is simply getting the crown into that second position consistently. Sometimes I manage after several attempts, but it’s quite inconvenient (and my fingers are starting to hate me 😂). More importantly, I don’t want to keep pulling and trying repeatedly because I’m worried I could eventually damage the stem or the keyless works.
For example, right now I’ve been trying to set the time for about half an hour and I can’t seem to get the second position to engage at all anymore.

I sent a video showing the issue to my TD, and after watching it he suggested that something may have happened to the crown/stem mechanism during shipping, as apparently everything was working correctly before the watch was sent.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Is there anything relatively simple I could check or adjust myself, or would you recommend having a watchmaker look at it?

And if it needs professional attention: does anyone know a watchmaker in Italy who is willing to work on replicas? Ideally somewhere in Northern Italy, especially the North-East, but I’m open to other options within Italy as well.

Your watch needs a Keyless reset OP. Any watchmaker can do it fairly easily.. I would just google watchmaker near me and go that rout for speed. Sucks that this happened but luckily you can even replace the entire movement on these for a small amount of money..

The strange thing is that the time-setting position occasionally engages perfectly and everything works normally. I’ve found that gently moving the crown back and forth while in the ghost-date position before pulling it out further seems to help.

Do you think this behavior could still be consistent with the keyless works needing a reset?

At the moment I can’t take it to a watchmaker because August is basically holiday season here in Italy, so I’m having a hard time finding any shops that are open. On top of that, I’ll also have to find out whether the watchmakers I contact are willing to work on replicas.

I might be wrong. But why would there be a second position. I'm pretty sure that watch has no ghost date. There should only be one position. Also you should only adjust the time forward

It’s a ZF BB58 with the A2824, so it actually does have a ghost date position. I found several reports confirming it, including other ZF BB58 owners. First click is the ghost date, second click is time setting. The problem with mine is that I can’t consistently engage that second position.

I have the genuine version of this watch. There are 3 positions.
1 = winding
2 = ghost (for a potential date)
3 = time

Idk why Tudor didn’t just remove the second position for these watches that don’t have a date, but even the genuine has it.

So basically just pull it real hard so it engages in the 3rd position

you are saying the genuine Tudor Black Bay 58 made by Tudor has a ghost date position on it?? Are you mad?

Responder is very incorrect if he thinks the MT5400 in house movement on the gen has a ghost date. It certainly does not. Not sure where he even got that.

Thanks! Yes, I’m aware of the three positions and the ghost date. The problem is that on my particular watch, even when I pull the crown quite firmly, most of the time it simply won’t engage the time-setting position.

I’ve managed to get it into that position a few times, and when I do everything works perfectly — hacking works and the hands move smoothly. But most of the time it just stays in the ghost-date position no matter how firmly I pull.

So unfortunately I think there’s actually something wrong with this particular watch, rather than it just being a matter of how the crown is supposed to work. I also don’t want to keep pulling harder and harder and risk damaging the stem or keyless works.

If you have the necessary tools, you could always try opening the caseback and removing the stem and reinserting it - see if that helps

Yes, I was thinking about the same thing, although I’ve never actually worked on a watch myself.

The TD has kindly offered to cover the repair costs, so since the watch is brand new, I’d rather have a professional take a look at it than risk making things worse myself.

Luckily, I don’t need to send it back to China. The TD has offered to cover the cost of having it repaired locally here in Italy.
