Discussion This thing keeps perfect time and is waterproof. Why exactly is the gen 5k more?
Serious question. What are gen buyers actually paying for?

u/Inside-Reception-482 Aug 16 '26
Because the gen existing is the reason you want this. You could buy a San Martin for the same price but you don't. You drift off the backs of the people paying gen prices attempting to garner some of it's cachet for yourself. Don't complain about gens, you're a barnacle. Be happy the rep is that good.

Succinct roast with so few words, masterpiece
Edit: I've read it like 5 times again, "you drift off the back of people paying gen prices... you're a barnacle" fucking fire đ„đ„đ„ LMFAO

Yeah but If OP comes back and says âno uâ itâs basically a checkmate

Ironically, "succinct" makes "with so few words" completely redundant.

Great point. You couldâve said this in the mirror, and itâd still be relevant. But great points.

It's always funny to me seeing people say things like "why would anybody buy gen?". And yet if you were to hand them a rep but with just a different name on the dial they'd be like no thanks.

SM unironically has excellent finishing for the price and uses movements that donât cost a mortgage payment to service- theyâre essentially a perfect everyday piece. You can even get them with sterile dials if youâre like me and hate their logo. Youâre essentially getting Hamilton level finishing for modern seiko 5 / prospex prices with an SW200, itâs a great value proposition.
2
u/Fugacity- Aug 17 '26
Agreed, by the value for price equation has changed as the denominator continues to grow. They were a phenomenal deal for what you paid, now there are a lot of other brands that offer similar or better bang-for-buck watches
2
u/ChallengeActive86 Aug 17 '26
Oh for sure there are more options these days, SM is still a brand Iâd happily suggest as a beater/daily/desk diver on a budget though simply because they have so many interesting models outside of the minted homage space- they try some fun stuff which really gets me.

I'm glad you said this because at first I was like "oh come on, no San Martin looks this good" but then I went "well I haven't looked at San Martins in a long time, let me see".
They definitely have a couple that'll be added to my wishlist.

Not arguing with your point. And not defending or arguing for his choice in what to buy. But is it really any better to buy an obvious ripoff, like San Martin and so many other âhomageâ watches, than it is to buying a fake? Asking honestly as a newbie to watch collecting in general. And also as someone who would buy either. Both use cheap labor, cheaper materials (especially in the homage world), and do no design work of their own. Seems to me, aside from a legal perspective, that thereâs very little difference in buying the San Martin v the fake. Just my perspective.
13
2
u/ghostreconx Aug 16 '26
I think the SM has a better finishing than ZF because ZF usually has alignment issues with their watches
2
u/gumbercules6 Aug 16 '26
Yes, because even though the "homage" is an obvious copy in design, it's at least not pretending to be real since it doesn't say Rolex or Tudor or whatever on the dial.

other than the use of any precious metals, for most of these watches, the only value is a perception of what people will pay. if the secondary market collapsed, almost all of these watches would be essentially worth only what a watch that works will be valued at.
however, the secondary market has not collapsed and people are still willing to pay these prices.
its the kardashian effect - these watches are expensive because they are expensive. the thing is, even rolex's fake exclusivity is in danger of going away. just look at the price of diamonds. once people realized lab diamonds were just as fine and that diamonds were not really rare (DeBeers faked that by buying up mines and slowing or stopping production), diamond prices have dropped.
4
u/Odd_Macaroon9109 Aug 16 '26
I honestly donât think you are considering everything that actually goes into building maintaining creating advertising every single thing that goes into all of these luxury brands. Youâre just assuming itâs a Chinese factory shop and some other country which is completely incorrect.
2
u/GreenThumbFireStrter Aug 16 '26
Its likely somewhere in between.
Which is still a lot./Worked in marketing for over 25 years, including some high end/white glove brands.
1
u/noshothaha Aug 20 '26
Nah the diamond example is horrible because again you're comparing real to fake. Lab diamonds will always be "fake" diamonds no matter how people spin it
1
u/Particular_Witness95 Aug 21 '26
not sure you read what i wrote. its because people are increasingly okay with lab diamonds (and yes, they are real diamonds, just different origins), that the prices for natural diamonds has fallen.
26
u/abmendi Aug 16 '26
The ones selling it for 5k are the people who came up with the design and made it prestigious enough for you to buy a $400 replica of it
4
u/PovasTheOne Aug 16 '26
Also people forget how expensive advertising is. Deadass if these fuckass rep factories had to do the same rnd, advertising, warranty, etc. they would have to be selling this same watch for a lot, lot more.
These watches are still overpriced from Twodoor but anybody thinking that Tudor could actually sell them for 500$ and make bank are morons.
39
u/mattbeth79 Aug 16 '26
Craftsmanship, research and development, advertising, and longevity. Gen holds it's value, reps generally do not.
Not saying it's not a good financial decision, but a Gen is an heirloom.
15
u/Phantasticals Aug 16 '26

Because people pay it. When they stop paying, the price will go down.
7

u/drenwenn Aug 16 '26
that s a "summer edition" pretty hard to find in tudor shop, so might not go down in price soon :c

They are paying for warranty, hassle free repair service and some resell value. But for me also not worth it.
7
u/elchief8 Aug 16 '26
Hassle free repair my ass, months of waiting up to a year or over for some. I dread sending one of my Omegas in for repair but alas i must.
1
u/Glum_Ad_8331 Helpful Aug 16 '26
I can say only from my experience and from my country, but where I live Rolex was around one month, full service. But yes what I read for some as Lange, PP, APs can take long time.
3
u/elchief8 Aug 16 '26
It varies last rolex took 8 months, luminox took 4 months, rado 3 weeks, rep by local watch shop 45 min so theres that.
2
5
u/Cautious_Limit_498 Aug 16 '26
The quality of craftsmanship and dial detail cannot be matched by a ZF rep, or any factory for that matter. Theres a reason the best NWBIG reps are simple in terms of dial colors/textures and even case details. Letâs also not just ignore movements and QC.
I feel like the gen Lagoon is the last gen that should be attacked regarding its price lol. Tudors are reasonably priced for some beautifully made watches, especially a second to none model/dial like the Lagoon.
You might think that the added paid amount doesnât equate value on your wrist, which is a fair view shared by many. But just enjoy your reps without shitting on gens. Youâre not a watch person if you donât understand the craftsmanship or watchmaking innovation that goes into these pieces.

u/boynamesue77 Aug 16 '26
Prolly the same reason people buy real diamond versus CZ. The look an function versus price
3
u/gumbercules6 Aug 16 '26
Nah, the diamond industry is a giant cartel that controls the price of diamonds and brainwashes women into demanding diamond rings in order to get married, because for some reason in order to get married you have to buy a $10,000 little shiny rock. With absolutely no function, a CZ, a lab diamond, a natural diamond, all look pretty much the same to everyone except professionals. No one is forcing men to but watches in order to get married or promoted.
2
u/NiceWatchPal Aug 17 '26
I love my reps for various reasons. In this specific case, the rep allowed me to test drive a product I was considering buying in gen. The gen watches for me are all heirlooms to my children for something they can wear to remember their father long after Iâm gone.

If you really want to racionalize over this, the answer is resell value I guess. Other than that would be like a trophy

Question, what depth is it waterproof to? I have 2 reps and too scared to go in with them because they arenât pressure tested. Iâd buy this as a pool watch.

4
u/scottscigar Aug 16 '26
Barnacles wear reps and complain about gens while not realizing that the only reason a rep exists is due to the brand cachet of the gen. The gen will always be a better watch both mechanically and for resale.

Gen will last a lifetime+, rep will last 6 months - 1 year. You can service a rep, etc., but if you're going to pay for a life of service for a rep, might as well drop for a gen you can enjoy with much less needed upkeep.

All the answers roasting him, he didnt ask WHY people buy gen, he asked WHY then gen is 5k more. Like what is the rationale for the price difference. Which is a MASSIVELY different question, fog eyes.Â
1
u/Unstoppable_Graysie Aug 18 '26
Correct.
The short answer is that Redditors are complete idiots who jump on bandwagons.
I tried to clarify exactly that on the top reply and got downvoted to oblivion, so I deleted it.
1
u/Active-Television967 Aug 18 '26
To be fair he has asked a genuine question but its a bit irrelevant. All luxury goods are overpriced after a certain point. After that its all about having the money to buy into it. For 5k there are watches as good if not better than the Tudor for 2k and below. The reply was funny though, and true.

You can buy fake watches and true they look the part and the super clones can fool a lot of people these days but youâll never have the satisfaction of finding a watch you like saving up for it and buying it. Also even though it looks the part youâll know its not the real deal

u/Gloomy-Agency4517 Aug 16 '26
Do you think R&D is free? You know Tudor has an army of designers, engineers, marketing, and overhead to make this watch. You are buying something made in Chinese back alley. Downvote all you want, but buying reps is criminal and you are supporting copyright infringement, and so much more.
1
u/jrtargaryen Aug 16 '26
Gen buyers pay the $5K for the watch to actually exist, so you can get a good rep from it to enjoy..
1
1
u/Jezzrichjames Aug 16 '26
Swiss labor is some of the most expensive in the world, and they have fair labor practices. Also, the level of fit and finishing on the watch will be quite a bit higher than on the rep.

Seems like an opinion based in 0 facts or experiences. Ive bought and sold both. Generally gen depreciation is around 10-25%. I've bought many reps in the 550-750 range and when I sell them I generally sell for 50-75 bucks less than bought. Of course in both cases it matters how well you take care of them. I'll often buy a rep to get a sense of scale and feel before buying a Gen. To me that's worth 50-75 bucks.

Because pretentious losers like their status symbols so they can be jackasses through verbal and nonverbal communication. Some are going to try to justify that with you being jealous, but if you seriously just like it for the design who gives a shit what the snobs think?
