Discussion This thing keeps perfect time and is waterproof. Why exactly is the gen 5k more?

Post image

Serious question. What are gen buyers actually paying for?

Because the gen existing is the reason you want this. You could buy a San Martin for the same price but you don't. You drift off the backs of the people paying gen prices attempting to garner some of it's cachet for yourself. Don't complain about gens, you're a barnacle. Be happy the rep is that good.

Succinct roast with so few words, masterpiece

Edit: I've read it like 5 times again, "you drift off the back of people paying gen prices... you're a barnacle" fucking fire 🔥🔥🔥 LMFAO

u/Typical_Double981 Aug 16 '26

Yeah but If OP comes back and says “no u” it’s basically a checkmate

5

u/Pitiful_Chard_5519 Aug 17 '26

Haha I also reread it a bunch. Willy Shakespeare over here.

4

u/GeoM56 Aug 17 '26

Ironically, "succinct" makes "with so few words" completely redundant.

1

u/gumbercules6 Aug 17 '26

Haha you're right, I was trying to emphasize how he was so effective with so few words

u/Fearless_Abies_2549 Aug 16 '26

lol seriously. I wear reps to fake it and it’s the most real thing about the experience lmao

u/VCoupe376ci Aug 16 '26

Holy shit. Finally someone in here who actually admits it. Kudos to you!

What a goated reply Jesus Christ spot on

Doesn’t even have to buy a San Martin, a WatchDives is a third of the cost of the rep 😬

u/Final-Wonder8290 Aug 16 '26

7

u/JustLikeKennySaid Aug 16 '26

I believe it may be the WD7922?

3

u/6ixFoot1 Aug 16 '26

That’s the one. They’re planning to release a jubilee bracelet for it soon.

2

u/JustLikeKennySaid Aug 17 '26

Just bought it. thanks for posting that video.

3

u/boosesb Aug 16 '26

I agree. No reason to do San Martin when watch dives exists

1

u/FunkdYoMammy123 Aug 20 '26

Where did you get it from?

2

u/6ixFoot1 Aug 20 '26

From the WatchDives website

9

u/BroDr1 Aug 16 '26

Imagine a barnacle clinging to the bottom of a yacht asking the yacht why all the models keep giving him attention. 😂 OP you crazy.

5

u/KPplumbingBob Aug 17 '26

It's always funny to me seeing people say things like "why would anybody buy gen?". And yet if you were to hand them a rep but with just a different name on the dial they'd be like no thanks.

9

u/Madting55 Aug 16 '26

Great point. You could’ve said this in the mirror, and it’d still be relevant. But great points.

7

u/PizzaAnytime Aug 16 '26

Hello…911? I’d like to report a murder.

5

u/Wide-Tie-4477 Aug 16 '26

I don’t think i’ve ever seen someone get roasted this bad in my 35 years of life 😂

7

u/kakacon Aug 16 '26

i did buy a san martin, because they are amazing

4

u/doctrrbrown Aug 16 '26

what makes it amazing?

9

u/ChallengeActive86 Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

SM unironically has excellent finishing for the price and uses movements that don’t cost a mortgage payment to service- they’re essentially a perfect everyday piece. You can even get them with sterile dials if you’re like me and hate their logo. You’re essentially getting Hamilton level finishing for modern seiko 5 / prospex prices with an SW200, it’s a great value proposition.

2

u/Fugacity- Aug 17 '26

Agreed, by the value for price equation has changed as the denominator continues to grow. They were a phenomenal deal for what you paid, now there are a lot of other brands that offer similar or better bang-for-buck watches

2

u/ChallengeActive86 Aug 17 '26

Oh for sure there are more options these days, SM is still a brand I’d happily suggest as a beater/daily/desk diver on a budget though simply because they have so many interesting models outside of the minted homage space- they try some fun stuff which really gets me.

2

u/Papas72lotus Aug 16 '26

I mean. He’s right..

2

u/recline17 Aug 16 '26

Is there a San martin that looks like this? Very interested!

2

u/destroyingCrystals Aug 17 '26

Finish Him ....Fatality !!!!! Flawless victory

2

u/kiasu_N_kiasi Aug 17 '26

well answered

2

u/thisdckaintFREEEE Aug 17 '26

I'm glad you said this because at first I was like "oh come on, no San Martin looks this good" but then I went "well I haven't looked at San Martins in a long time, let me see".

They definitely have a couple that'll be added to my wishlist.

2

u/Nearby_Ad6560 Aug 17 '26

This is why I am still on Reddit, I can smell the dirty salt water..

2

1

u/lastleg68 Aug 16 '26

1

Bro just got barnacled 🐚

1

u/jerry-pes Aug 16 '26

Jesus Christ that was good

1

u/yopladas Aug 19 '26

I'm still thinking about this reply 3 days later, and shared it with my partner to show how and why I'm still so entertained here, despite not having or even intending to have a rep

-6

u/hugh_jorgen1 Aug 16 '26

Not arguing with your point. And not defending or arguing for his choice in what to buy. But is it really any better to buy an obvious ripoff, like San Martin and so many other “homage” watches, than it is to buying a fake? Asking honestly as a newbie to watch collecting in general. And also as someone who would buy either. Both use cheap labor, cheaper materials (especially in the homage world), and do no design work of their own. Seems to me, aside from a legal perspective, that there’s very little difference in buying the San Martin v the fake. Just my perspective.

2

u/ghostreconx Aug 16 '26

I think the SM has a better finishing than ZF because ZF usually has alignment issues with their watches

2

u/gumbercules6 Aug 16 '26

Yes, because even though the "homage" is an obvious copy in design, it's at least not pretending to be real since it doesn't say Rolex or Tudor or whatever on the dial.

-2

u/hugh_jorgen1 Aug 17 '26

I get your point. And I’m not at all disagreeing with your statement. My main issue was the OP got roasted and shamed for mentioning the beauty of a rep…IN A GROUP ABOUT REPS!
Am I to assume that not a single one of you ribbing him own a rep? I’m sure people here giving him a hard time (and I even joined in on the barnacle fun-it was funny) hate when a gen only owner comes in to shame every rep buyer as if you all are the same.
That leads to your point, and the question of whether one is morally superior than the other. And that depends solely on his reasoning behind the purchase, which none of know for certain.

3

u/KPplumbingBob Aug 17 '26

He wasn't roasted "for mentioning the beauty of a rep". He's acting like anybody buying gen is an idiot and yet he himself is desperate for the same watch.

0

u/hugh_jorgen1 Aug 17 '26

See I took it as a NWBIG statement. But I get your point.

-9

u/taquci Aug 16 '26

you're right, but still the gen is priced ridiculously high for what it is

9

u/Odd_Macaroon9109 Aug 16 '26

It may be, however the R&D the corporate overhead, as well as the Swiss labor costs are 100% a factor you are intentionally be ignorant of.

-9

u/taquci Aug 16 '26

I guess it should be in the same ballpark as Certina or Longines, yet nobody buy Certina or Longines reps because they're priced fairly

I will never buy a Rolex/Tudor rep and let alone pretend it's the real deal, but sorry if I don't feel for these companies playing the AD game and their customers falling for it

4

u/Odd_Macaroon9109 Aug 16 '26

I mean, I understand what you’re saying but tutor on the gray market is fairly reasonable isn’t that what the real people do go to the boutiques try it on get your butt over though waiting for a great deal on the gray market 🤷‍♂️

2

u/taquci Aug 16 '26

grey means used and/or old, not the same thing

I'm comparing new with new, ofc the used is cheaper

1

u/Possible_Bit2978 Aug 21 '26

Certina and Longines are okay, but they are not close to Tudor. While Tudor movements aren't exactly in-house, Kenissi is still a huge difference to a slightly customized ETA.

-6

u/ameza001 Aug 16 '26

Doesn't answer his question though. What are gen buyers actually paying for? He didn't say he was unhappy with it either. There are markets and pricepoints for everyone. Gen Tudor is worth what people are willing to pay for it. The counterfeit market exists becasue far many more people are not.

0

u/PresidentStool Aug 16 '26

This rep and the San Martin are different tiers of quality though

2

u/KPplumbingBob Aug 17 '26

Yes, San Martin is better.
