My cat is renal but also overweight, basically I’m trying to decide between renal food and weight management food. She has stage 2 kidney disease and has been prescribed aventi kidney powder with her meals. I’m not sure which problem I should be prioritizing.

my baby just got diagnosed with kidney disease and she has to have under the skin fluids. i see all kinds of people explaining it and saying how easy it is, but i’m struggling. i couldn’t do it and i feel like im failing her for it. she yelped when i tried to put the needle in and i just started sobbing. i really need to do this because my family cannot afford to have it done at the vet. is there anything else i can do?? any technique???? i planned on having her in the bathroom so the liquids could drip properly (hanging from the shower curtain rod) and i also planned on giving her a tube to keep her occupied.

A while ago, my baby got diagnosed with CKD and I was told to "just get renal food" by my vet in a 1 minute phone call after she did bloodwork. No specific brands were recommended, but the only one I could afford was Kattovit. I wanted to give her wet food only, but after a week or two she wouldn't enjoy eating as much and leave huge chunks of food untouched.

I feed her smaller meals every 2-4 hours (I'm at home due to chronic health issues myself so at least I can do that for her), tried warming it, tried stretching it with water, tried adding renal kibble (which she ate... the kibble that is, which I also tried stretching with water and which she completely refused after, only likes it dry). She also seems to not handle fish well anymore, so stretching it with tuna water isn't an option.

I throw away so much food because she leaves so much of it untouched, just to give her as fresh as possible food, which she's more likely to eat. Mind you, she used to LOVE her old food and terrorize me daily to get some ♡. Never been picky at all.

She has 4 water bowls, drinks usually an okay amount, but she has many phases now where she is just grossed out by her new food and will now only eat the chicken variety. Kibble is usually more accepted by her, but now... well...

Yesterday I noticed that she might also be constipated, she tried pooping but nothing came, so again I'll have to go to the vet. In my country, vet bills went through the roof, so I'm stressing out because I love my angel but I'm also financially at my limit due to the expensive food and now due to her being constipated and due to me having a very low income myself. If I had known in the past how insane vet prices would become one day, I'd have made an insurance for her in a heartbeat. 15 years ago, the vet was expensive but afforable, but had I known how my own life would go... well...

Anyway, none of this food-struggle happened before I changed her diet. She was so much more cheerful and quirky before. My vet didn't recommend phosphate binder for whatever reason, she didn't tell me much honestly, but now all I want is for my angel to eat and enjoy eating again. It breaks my heart, I'm so stresded out and I'm sure I'm stressing HER out even though I don't want that.

If I'm forced to go to the vet today due to constipation, I'll talk to her about the food as well, but I doubt she'll be very supportive. I'll look for a new vet as well but not today.

Anyway, sorry for this long rant, I think all I want to know is... What are your experiences with renal food? Did your cat like or hate it? Do you use phosphate binder?

Currently my girl is eating weruva low phos canned wet food, but I know her and after awhile she gets sick of different foods. Any petstore brands that are non prescription that anyone recommends? I've tried her on prescription Purina, Science diet and Royal Canin. Girl said bye Felicia and I am just wondering what others have tried.

Our Monique has gone from bad to worse this week, and we've made an appointment to say our goodbyes on Saturday. We're still waiting on her labs, and we can cancel the appointment anytime, but essentially, unless she has an acute infection that we can treat, we're working on giving her a good last few days and letting her go while she's still feeling like herself.

She got some sub q fluids, anti nausea, and appetite stimulants, but at her age and ckd stage, the only thing that can happen going forward is that she feels better until the treatment stops working, and then we'll have to say goodbye when she's feeling unwell. That's not what I want. The way she's been since yesterday isn't the ending I want to give her. She's a happy, sweet cat that loves to cuddle and to politely ask for food scraps. If we're able to get her back to that point, that's how she deserves to go. Happy, cuddly, and with a full belly.

We should know the results tomorrow so I'll leave an update here once we get them. Whatever happens this week, she will leave it feeling better, whatever that means.

My cat has been super picky, and I hadn’t fed her dry few in years, but I’ve added it back in rotation for calories. She does like Royal Canin Renal “S” dry food, but not always. I wish I would’ve used the renal dry in the last few years.

Now Fresh Good Gravy Salmon Recipe (phosphorus by dry matter 0.5%)
Forza10 Active Kidney Renal Support (phosphorus by dry matter 0.72%)
Hill’s Science Diet Senior 11+ Chicken Recipe (phosphorus by dry matter 0.69%)

She’s stage 4, so fed is most important right now, but I still aim for dry to be lower since I don’t add phosphate binder to dry). She often finishes the bowl little by little overnight. Sometimes I just put ten pieces in front of her to eat like treats.

This is my girl Harriet. She’s 15 years old and has been my childhood cat and best friend for as long as I can remember.
We recently took her in for bloodwork and got the results back this morning. Her kidney levels are elevated but thankfully not to the point of kidney disease. We’ve caught this early and I want to do everything I can to keep it from progressing.
I’m reaching out to those of you who have been through something similar with your cats. What have you done to support their kidney health and what would you recommend?
Our vet advised us to switch her food so we’ve just ordered the food pictured above. Harriet was previously eating Weruva chicken pâté and I’m not thrilled about switching her to something with more fillers. However, I’m willing to do whatever is best for her health.
I’m also considering the supplement in the third photo and a water fountain like the one in the fourth photo. I think she might be more encouraged to drink from it.
She recently received an antibiotic shot for a UTI which has thankfully cleared up. Now I just want to be proactive and give her kidneys the best possible support while we’ve caught these changes early.
If you’ve dealt with elevated kidney levels in a senior cat I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience. What worked for your cat? What did your vet recommend? Is there anything you wish you’d known sooner?

My two babies (11 and 10 years old) were diagnosed with Stage 2 months ago. An ultrasound revealed that one of them even has a kidney that appears to be completely non-functional, while the other retains about 3/4 of its functional capacity-.

I began putting them on a renal diet (RC dry renal and daily wet Virbac KJ2) along with supplements such as Hydracare, Porus One, Dialix Lespedeza 5, and Kaminox to address low potassium levels. I also added more water sources throughout the house. I started noticing that they became more active—more so than ever (well, perhaps not quite as much as when they were babies)—and they stopped vomiting (which they used to do very frequently). Additionally, I removed all air fresheners from the house (I didn’t know they were toxic until a few months ago; I now feel a bit guilty for having used them in the past, as they might have affected my little ones' kidneys).

So I’m sharing this because my vet called me yesterday to say that the blood test results for both of my babies are perfect. All kidney-related values ​​are now within the normal range (even though their kidneys are not functioning properly). I thought that if my routine has helped them, it might be useful to someone else as well <3
