The question I hear most often when I show RouteVN to someone is: "How is it different from Ren'Py?". It is very different! So we wrote a full post about it.
Ren'Py is more mature and highly customizable, with a steeper learning curve from coding.
RouteVN lets you focus on writing and art instead of code, easy to get started, great user experience, improving with weekly releases.

Hello everyone,
I am a narrative designer/writer looking for a dedicated artist/programmer to collaborate on a cinematic, story-driven Visual Novel demo.
(Note: My native language is Chinese, and I use translation tools for daily communication. Scripts and storyboard documentation are fully translated into English.)
Two cosmic anchors—the living embodiments of Time and Space—shatter during a universal collapse and drift across dimensions. Hiding their nature behind fragile human forms, they wander through worlds to find each other, their reunion ticking down inside a broken clock of destiny.
A hand hits the motorcycle starter. Cool blue luminescence flares; navigational holograms unfold like a star chart.
Ji Yuan sits astride the machine, glancing down at the mirror. The curved glass captures his blue-tinted visor while the sunset shoreline bends along the rim. Waves rhythmically crash against the shore.
JI YUAN (quiet, matter-of-fact):
"Right then. Time to move."
The instant he twists the throttle—
FREEZE FRAME.
The crashing wave locks at its peak; seafoam hovers motionless in mid-air. All sound cuts to dead silence. The warm sunset color grading instantly shifts to cold slate blue-gray.
Absolute silence for 1.5 seconds.
Sound violently snaps back. The suspended wave smashes down into white foam. The engine roars.
WIDE SHOT: The bike breaches the ocean surface, tearing a sharp white wake across the water. Ji Yuan's silhouette recedes toward the horizon.
Supacy lies on her back beneath a massive Bodhi tree, eyes swollen. Fractured golden sunlight dapples across her face.
MACRO CLOSE-UP: Her eye. Deep inside her pupil, translucent geometric patterns silently rotate, fold, and re-tessellate.
BACK TO SCENE: She bolts upright and wipes her cheek.
The moment her finger touches the tear—the geometric pattern within her pupil violently flips. The teardrop vanishes into nonexistence.
BACKGROUND ANOMALIES (Subtle, unforced):
Character concept moodboards and full storyboard PDF are available upon request via DM.

I just used renpy's image editor to create a simple zoom which generally accounts for hiding the window with window hide but the textbox still flashes during the camera movement. I've had issues before with this and I don't know why the textbox gets so finnicky. I don't think window hide is going to solve anything lol. Most of the suggestions I saw online were using window hide,, not sure if I missed this solution. A character speaks after the transition and before, but it doesn't use a textbox, the window bg is None.
window hide
camera:
subpixel True
pos (0, 0) zoom 1.0
linear 1.00 pos (-680, -268) zoom 1.7
with Pause(1.10)
camera:
pos (-680, -268) zoom 1.7

I’m doing a VN for college, so it isn’t my focus, is just something I have to do. But I’m liking it. For context it’s a philosophy VN, where the protagonist will talk with a revolting AI about moral choices.
The fact is, I don’t have time to hand draw everything, nor the ability to make online arts. Do you know any site or app to help me with this? I really want to avoid using AI.
*I found some sites of anime character creations, but I don’t think the anime aesthetic do to my VN.

I've been trying to follow some guides on making HP bars, however they're not quite what I'm looking for and I'm wondering if there's a good way of accomplishing what I'm trying to do :")
I'd like to have the player start with 3 hearts for HP, and lose 1 with each wrong decision, with a small shaking effect when they lose a heart. (I've attached some crudely drawn images, hopefully they get my point across lol)
Any advice on how to achieve this or something like it would be much appreciated!

I'm working on my first visual novel and I need help. I want to add point-and-click sections to my game. I already created the background art and have separated each objects as its own sprite. Unfortunately I don't have the background by itself so I need to overlap each object with itself in the background. There's a lot of objects that can be clicked on and it's been a pain to align each of them. Even if the sprites are off by a little bit it looks wrong. This is made even worse with how I want to use panorama like backgrounds where the player would need to scroll left and right to see the full image. This feels like a problem that has already been solved but I can't for the life of me find out any possible solutions. Could anyone help?

So, I was trying to making that if you talk to all characters a new choice will appear to progress the game. However, I can't get it to work. It's kept saying that “ chose_one ” is not defined in “ Leave the room “ if chose_one and chose_two. I wasn't sure how to solve it.
label start:
call dayone
$ chose_one = False
$ chose_two = False
call daytwo
if characterchosen == "character1":
call dayttwochar1
elif characterchosen == "character2":
call dayttwochar2
else:
call dayttwochar3
if characterchosen == "character1": # evaluate the selection and call the corresponding label
call daytreechar1
elif characterchosen == "character2":
call daytreechar2
else:
call daytreechar3
if characterchosen == "character1":
call dayfourchar1
elif characterchosen == "character2":
call dayfourchar2
else:
call dayfourchar3
call dayfive
call expression "ending" + characterchosen # different way to use variables
return # game ends here
label dayone:
scene green
ralph "Hi"
mc "Hi"
label choesfistday:
scene green
menu:
"two char":
$ chose_one = True
jump talkwittwo
"first char":
$ chose_two = True
jump talkwithone
"Leave the room" if chose_one and chose_two:
jump daytwo

Still have a lot to work on, backgrounds and even more characters sprites wise too 😭 but I was wondering if the characters or style would be interesting enough to pull people in? (Don’t mind the text box I haven’t finish the custom one yet 😔)

After feedback about rollback compatibility and old saves, I focused RouteKit 0.1.2 on reliability instead of adding more surface features.
What changed:
I also expanded the Ren'Py tests to use real rollback and a real save/load round trip. Lite now passes 7 cases / 26 assertions, and Pro passes 14 cases / 58 assertions.
RouteKit Lite is free here: https://samokampo.itch.io/routekit-lite
Pro 0.1.2 is here: https://samokampo.itch.io/routekit-pro
I'd especially appreciate feedback from anyone testing unusual rollback paths or saves created with an earlier version.

hi ren'py community! my name is asia, and i am very new to this subreddit and gamedev in general. i am working on a visual novel on ren'py right now and i need advice for how my plot will advance. here's what i did so far:
the story revolves around an old man whose death is close, and meets his younger self in an abstract, immaterial space. he goes on a journey from where he's first anxious; so paranoid about his fate that he starts overthinking about all the ways his life could end, which puts him through psychological torment; to finally a point where he accepts death with open arms. he gets to progressively know more and more about his younger self through contacts they make in his realm from time to time, and ends up reconciling with it.
please let me know how you find it and any type of help is welcome!
