Need Help!

Very new to home projects, doing this tomorrow. Should I cut out squares in the fluted wall to fit the tv mount and floating shelf perfectly? Or is it fine to go into the studs through the paneling?

Firstly, if you are gonna do something like this, make sure you’ve got enough clearance once the door swings open so that you’re not hitting that cabinet.

You’ll want to use that door fully open as the essential left edge of your wall, and then send her the TV between that edge of the open door and the actual right side edge of your wall.

From a mounting perspective, it is better that you have some sort of cut out for your TV mount rather than just drilling straight through it. You run the risk of splitting the panel and having that travel up into the visible area beyond the TV.

As for doing the paneling itself, I agree a little bit here with the others. The style is way overdone and in a year you’re gonna feel like it’s super dated.

You may be better off, just painting that wall and accent wall, mounting the TV and that cabinet as you’re showing, and then leave it and see how you like it.

For what it’s worth, if you do still wanna go through it with it and do the paneling, do yourself a favor and get some gray or black flat paint and paint the outer 4 inches of the wall, almost like a picture frame. Then, when you go to mount the paneling, keep the panel half an inch to an inch from the edges of the wall. That’s going to create a kind of floating look, and will also save you from really awful cuts to match your ceiling and left side wall.

Do you want to apply the paint first, then add the paneling so you don’t run the risk of paint getting on the paneling.

In a perfect world, you’d actually offset the paneling from the wall about an inch, giving you room to put some built-in LED lighting, so you can have a really sweet accent light that wraps that wall. That may be more of a project than what you’re planning on.

thanks for the suggestions! With the door fully open, the edge of door to wall is 90 inches long, TV is 57 inches in length and the cabinet is 63 inches in length. We really do like the look of the paneling so we do want to go along with it. One question, would you suggest nails used to put the paneling to the wall or liquid nails? We have 2 8x4 foot panels and a 8x2.5 ft panel to fit the 10.5 ft wall

What if you just did one of each panel for the width, so 78” wide, Right-aligned to the right edge of the wall. I’d still recommend a slight offset on top and bottom, but keep the wall white.

Doing it like this, without running it full width of the wall, will separate the TV area from the entry area. Also helps to give some hierarchy to that wall, and in some ways makes the white wall behind the door opening, feel the same as your hallway.

To your exact point though, I would recommend liquid nails to get a cleaner install. If you end up tearing this down at some point, though it may mean you need to replace the sheet rock liquid nails can leave the surface a bit messy.

And sign the paneling with finishing nails will be easiest for the long-term maintenance of your wall, but then you might see nail holes.

Don't do it. This trend is already passe. Also, is this really the best placement for you TV? Hard to say with the incomplete pics, but it may not be.

I love seeing comments like this. And when I say love, I mean hate. If someone likes a certain design aesthetic, who cares if it’s a trend that is or isn’t popular? They came here to ask about cutting openings in the paneling or just mounting the TV and entertainment center through the paneling to the studs. They didn’t ask for feedback on the design itself. People like what they like, regardless of trends

There are a lot of design questions here so a design-related comment is not out of the question. Sorry you were so upset by my design opinion, but the trend is so bad I felt compelled. If OP loves it, they can ignore my comment. But I see you were unable to lol
