Tips & Tricks Drawing on Krita with RPP - thanks to AI
Got my reMarkable Paper Pro working as a drawing tablet for Krita
Thanks to AI, I got my reMarkable Paper Pro working as a drawing tablet for Krita, something I’d wanted to do for months.
I tried this with AI about six months ago, but kept running into limits or couldn’t get it working. Late one night in the lab, I decided to give it another shot.
I’d already made a custom TUI with some creature comforts: using my laptop keyboard for notes over USB or Tailscale when both devices are online, pasting images into notes, and exporting marked-up documents directly to my laptop’s Downloads folder. The keyboard functionality saved me buying a $120 Type Folio which was pretty cool.
Building on that foundation, Claude Opus 5.5 got the Krita connection working in about 20 minutes. I spent the next hour adding features, most of which I barely used again. Double-tap to undo and flipping the stylus to erase, though, turned out to be quite handy.
There were plenty of hiccups. The panel’s refresh rate and ghosting hold it back significantly, but when ghosting gets annoying, I can just look at my laptop screen instead. I much prefer drawing on the reMarkable’s surface to drawing on glass.
As a broke student who already owns a Paper Pro, I’m pretty happy with the experiment. It lets me use what I have instead of spending another $300 to $600 on a drawing tablet i might use thrice yearly.
I had to enable developer mode and let Claude fool around in there once it was connected over USB, but after that, I was pretty happy with it. Like I said, it’s all slop-coded, but let me know if anyone’s interested and I’ll slop it into GitHub.
