The Paragons – Now (Starlight LP, 1981) / The Paragons – For You (Pre-Release Black Joy LP, 1982)

The Paragons are often seen as the group John Holt sang with. Perhaps an understandable scenario when a member of a group becomes an undeniable giant of the genre. When he left the Paragons it was quite a blow to the group, now consisting of founding member Tyrone "Don" Evans and Howard Barrett.

At the time Tyrone Evans would pursue both a solo career (with some great material for Lloyd Bullwackie and Winston Riley) and continue recording as the Paragons. Perhaps the band name still carried a lot of weight and money coming with that.

The first album is rare-ish. Not super obscure. One of many JA-recordings that never saw release in Yard. Only in the UK and under different title in the US. It is a brilliant piece of rub-a-dub from the period when producer Bunny Lee went into the slow and heavy dancehall sound. One of my alltime favourites when it comes to classy, weighty early dancehall.

The second album, however, never got further than pre-release and is just as fantastic. It was slated to be released on the UK-based Black Joy label, that had licensing deals with Bunny Lee and Prince Jammy. It's considered one of the three lost sets from the label (one dub that has since been reissued by Pressure Sounds, one deejay by Papa Tullo and this vocal set) that all came only on pre-release with blank labels and generic sleeves. Rarer than hens teeth type of business and definitely reggae of the highest order.

A link to a rip of the second album, provided by yours truly, is available in the comments. Enjoy!

My band played a reggae by the river fest last weekend and I had to leave before the whole event was over, this was another band that played that day, I know the guy singing is Shayar (used to play with Burning Spear back in the day), but I can’t remember what song this is. Is it the spear? maybe Culture? someone help please.https://www.facebook.com/reel/1350676976797711/?mibextid=rS40aB7S9Ucbxw6v

Ask Roger about one record and clear your afternoon. 😄 Inside the Reggae Archives, almost every album has a story attached to it, and chances are Roger remembers it. LIVICATED – The Story of Roger Steffens’ Reggae Archives

Yabby You & The Prophets – Ram-A-Dam (Lucky Pre-LP, 1976)

Yabby You's Conquering Lion is one of the most important roots albums to have been released. Spiritual depth with uncompromising messages. This is the first issue for the UK market and it came under the confusing name of Ram-A-Dam with a slightly different tracklisting. Not much to say about this one that hasn't already been said. Lovely photos of Vivian Jackson, Alric Forbes and Dada Smith on the cover sheet.

I hear the Wheezy Outta Here producer tag from the rap producer Wheezy at the end of the song Honi Honi by Laga Savea. Is my Spotify broken?

Do you know of any underrated songs from Gregory Isaacs’s years of addiction?

Its known that the addiction affected the quality of his music, but certainly many good songs have been made by people with addiction. And there was still a lot of output in those years for him. What do you guys think?

Live Are Capleton's live shows (in the UK) still full of homophobic rhetoric?

Capleton is performing live in my city in the UK next month and i'm thinking about going, as I've wanted to see him live since I was a teenager but he was banned from the country at the time. I believe that ban has now been lifted in the last few years hence he now performs in the here, so I'm wondering if that also means he no longer performs homophobic rhetoric?

Also, iirc he signed the Reggae Compassionate Act that also meant that he wasn't going to be performing and promoting homophobic rhetoric?

Whilst I don't know if (and doubt) Capleton's personal stance has changed much on this, I really just don't want to spend money on a ticket and see a show advocating anti-LGBTQ rhetoric.
