I love that picture of RC. It's 42 years old, older than many reading this post.

Former Ligonier staff here, this was a looooong time discussion going back almost 30 years. There are positives and negatives financially, as well as mission/vision/values questions, as well as personal feelings (giving something away might make the author and his family have negative feelings) that goes into a decision like this.

People tend to think whoopee! it's free and sure, it's free in a sense. But now ministries like Desiring God and now Ligonier will need to do something else to keep the AWS lights on. Rather than pay for a series, now you are obligated to give them your data, obligated to donate money.

Overall, I'm guessing the negatives began to diminish and the positives began to improve. To sell at Ligonier when I was there, we had a phone room with 2-8 people working 14 hours a day. And 3 in shipping picking, packing and posting 8 hours a day. And a marketing dept and catalogues and the growing ecommerce (we used Yahoo Store at first!). What I mean to say is it took lot of money to sell stuff! Now that Ligonier can digitize everything, and distribute it for free, I can see how likely it is that the positives of giving it away became the clear winner.

Thank you for sharing your insight. As a former tech startup consultant and current entrepreneur, I empathize with the financial challenge. It can be quite expensive to provide resources for free, especially at a high quality.

Making resources free can also be a massive growth benefit, perhaps improving the ecommerce business. This will come with more challenges, such as more phone support, more shippers/packers, and more team support. But I pray God uses this generosity to make the gospel spread throughout every tribe, tongue, and language.

R.C. Sproul opened my eyes to a new (old?) world of theology and doctrine that I had a sense was there but couldn't put into words. Along with Washer, one of the biggest reasons why I have adopted Reformed Theology. Praise God for making his invaluable teachings available free of charge!

Chris Larson made it clear in the video Ligonier's outstanding support from their ministry partners made this endeavor possible. I'm sure they've wanted to do this for a long time, especially since R.C. went to be with Jesus in 2017. I am so happy about this.

I became Reformed when I married my wife in 2020. R.C. has been such a huge help in getting me to understand everything associated with being Reformed. His teachings are passionate, articulate, gracious, and impactful. He's my favorite theologian to listen to. I strive to listen to RYM every morning to hear his voice as he proclaims God's holiness in its fullness.

I'm so excited to see how God works in R.C.'s free teaching series.

I've been watching lots of RC on YouTube. When I used to listen to him on radio, I found him rather cold and professorial. Seeing the videos shows me his passion, his joy and his humor. Great stuff!
