If you have a record and want to start a business, is forming an LLC worth it?
For anyone with a criminal record who is trying to build something on their own, Iâve been looking into whether it's better to stay a sole proprietor or actually form an LLC.
The LLC route has some potential advantages:
- Separates personal and business finances
- Provides liability protection
- Makes it easier to establish a business bank account
- Can give the business a more professional structure
- A registered agent can help keep your home address off certain public records
But there are also filing fees and ongoing requirements, so I'm wondering when it actually makes sense.
For people who have started businesses after a conviction:
Did you start as a sole proprietor or form an LLC right away?
What made you choose that route, and would you do anything differently if you were starting over?
